Got Wigan to Todmorden (2 × £1.50), couple of hours, Todmorden to Manchester (£1.50), few hours to go to cinema, Manchester to Wigan (£1.50) on Saturday 28th January.

Got Wigan to Manchester early on Saturday 4th March for 50p and late back for £1.50; will then get a South Pennines Day Ranger to occupy the rest of my day.

Yeah, I've seen more £1.50 and £1 tics this side of the Pennines than 50ps, but the East Lancs line has a few interesting ones.

GWR Sale on advance tickets for the next week
well i asked for one down south lol
Unfortunately it doesn't seem great imo, as someone who mainly travels from Reading or Oxford I looked at fares to Cardiff and then Penzance, and in both cases (since I have a railcard) it was not much difference to either the super off peak single or the cheapest normal advance anyway. I imagine from London and without a railcard tho there are decent savings to be had

Perhaps it's this section: "Some times / dates / routes are restricted due to availability on those trains". Taken from: https://www.northernrailway.co.uk/offers/sale.
More passengers might be coming out of Stockport at a certain time.
I don't think that's the reason. No trains at all from SPT have any sale advance allocation. Meanwhile, from NWI, every train has a sale ticket on it. I don't think many people would be making a one way journey on that route, and make all the tickets on every single train be sold out.

Not sure if this is the right place to put this but I guess it is a form of special offer, but Southern are now offering a reward programme now with every £1 you spend on an Advance, anytime or season ticket, purchased through Southern's Website. It is only available until March 5 however. it doesn't really specify what you can spend these rewards on.

Your commute has just been upgraded

From now until 5 March, earn 3 points for every £1 you spend on Anytime, Flexi Season and Season tickets bought directly at southernrailway.com and fulfilled via an eTicket or Key Smartcard. Your points could earn you rewards for restaurants, days out and more. Terms and conditions apply.

We want to make the money and time you spend on commuting also help you to enjoy your travel, leisure or home time even more.

How does it work?

Step 1: book your train ticket. Purchase an Anytime, Flexi Season or Season ticket on an eTicket or Key Smartcard.

Step 2: once you have purchased your ticket, you will be invited to register on the Next Level Rewards website to create an account and enter your unique reward ID, found in your Southern Rail confirmation email.

Step 3: claim your rewards on the Next Level Rewards website.

Reward website is on the step 3, from a glance it seems it's
50 points - 45 day access to audio and e-books from BookBeat
75 points - 1 free day out to UK attractions
100 points - 3 months premium subscription to The Mindfulness App
250 points - One Free Game on Virtual Escaping
900 points - One Vue cinema ticket

Not sure if anything more is available if you sign up and those 5 are just tasters

So at a glance it's a bit rubbish, bit like the old "SWR Rewards" scheme where you could save 10% on a high end hotel in London on selected dates or 20% off some restaurants on selected days

Northern Rail sale ... I've just booked 3 day-trips in February / March from Newcastle to Hexham, Prudhoe and Hartlepool and paid a total of £9 .. so that's pretty decent I think.

Funny though, how some short journeys are far more expensive than longer ones, even using the exact same train. What is the logic, say of a 20 mile trip costing £3 return, but the half-way one £11

It's only for journeys Northern offer Advances on usually - advances don't get offered on lesser used flows usually. e.g Disley to Buxton wouldn't get an advance, but Mcr to Buxton would.

It's just how the sale is, while sales continue to be always on advance fares this will always be the case. I'd love to see an offer on off peak fares, perhaps something like 25% off of all fares, but since most fares can be used on multiple TOCs it would most likely have to be a nationwide thing agreed between all companies and I reckon we all know the chances of something like that happening

Or even a return to a more leisure focused day ranger style promotion, like Northern have run in the past when they have teamed up with various local advertpapers (sorry newspapers ;)), London Midland with the Great Escape etc. More flexibility if things go wrong or if the weather turns out to be less than ideal.

Chiltern Railways are the latest company to weigh in with a January sale, on selected advance tickets purchased from today until 6/2/2023 for journeys up to 14/3/2023.

Just to expand on that:

The offer is 50% off their lowest tier Advances (so £3.20 instead of £6.40 for London to Birmingham, for example) and looks to only be available on trains where that lowest tier applies.

Any good cashback available at the moment? I need to book some tickets

The banking apps with LNER offer seem to have an extra condition on now. Previously it was 5% on any transaction but now I have to spend £70. I have never spent that much on train tickets in my entire life (in one go)

So much for trying to get passengers back onto the railway FML

Just had a quick look at this myself. Natwest say 5%, minimum £70 spend but Halifax and Curve are both 10% with no minimum. Not banks obviously but Nectar Connect (20pts/£1) and Airtime Rewards (5%) both showing no minimum either.

Eurostar have sent an email - £39 fares each way (except for the Netherlands) if booked as a round trip, selected dates available until June, although with weekends mostly being unavailable. No discount on Std Premier or Business class fares.

The Nectar Connect offer does vary for each Nectar member. I also currently have the offer for LNER, but mine is at 10pts/£1 (the only time it was at 20pts/£1 for me was when I used it for the first time just over a year ago; every time since it's been 10pts/£1).

If you know you will be spending that amount on tickets within the next year and have the available funds, you could just buy LNER e-vouchers and spend them as you go.

That is a fantastic idea! Could you explain how to do that? I had a look on the website but couldn’t find it.
