East midlands train fares ARE too expensive! I travel regularly to the Derby area, and usually either pay 8 quid for an advance from Euston to Burton on trent (which is on the local Derby bus/ rail network & day ticket area), or £23 for a London Midland and connections Off Peak return. The comparative EM trains fares are at least 100% extra...

I think you could argue that's just as much an example of London Midland being cheap than EMT being expensive. LM have to compete with faster operators like Virgin so have to offer cheap fares to attract longer distance passengers on to their services.

an off peak 'any permitted is £43 even with a railcard! A 'via derby' off peak return is an extra £17 on top of the that! As well as this its generally faster via Tamworth if using virgin trains.

There is a rainbow day from Guildford station, offering a £10 adult/£5 child ticket for unlimited travel on South West Trains on Saturday 20th July.

http://www.southwesttrains.co.uk/rainbowday.aspx

The link quotes :

"To take advantage of this one day only offer, simply fill in the form below, print out your voucher and take it to Guildford station between 17 - 20 July 2013 to get your Rainbow Day ticket."

Does this imply that you can print out the said voucher and take it to the station on the morning of Sat 20th of July ? I should imagine that there will be an almighty queue at the ticketing office ::D

Then be the clever one and go beforehand to get your ticket. You will have to pay to get there either way. :p

Brilliant! Found the offers and for next month there's the £30 promo advance... then if you look below a £25.10 normal first class advance. Wonder if most people would notice!

The latter is probably cheaper because you have a Y-P Railcard, as the "promo" fares cannot be railcard discounted according to the T&C's!

Virgin are again doing their summer promotion on Virgin-only 'Super Off-Peak' tickets between London Euston/ Milton Keynes Central and Virgin stations to Birmingham New Street until 2nd September. The Super Off-Peak Return costs £28 (£20 to/from Milton Keynes), railcard discounts are available, BoJ is permitted, and half price singles are available when purchased with a single for the return leg.

Interestingly, there appears to be a discrepancy between the time restrictions listed on the VT e-mail, as incorporated into the online booking sites, and the restriction code given on the NRE site, which, of course, is supposedly "the definitive source of information":
http://www.virgintrains.co.uk/assets/pdf/announcements/super-off-peak-timetable-2013.pdf
vs
http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/pdfs/SSR_SN.pdf
That said, it's clear that the restrictions published by Virgin are intended to be official, and I wouldn't recommend attempting to rely on the NRE restrictions.
