They had quite a substantial refurbishment in 2017/18:

Rail passengers in Norfolk, Suffolk and Cambridgeshire are to benefit from cleaner, smarter trains with more seats and plug points, as Greater Anglia’s first refurbished Class 170 trains re-enters passenger service.

170 270 is the first train to receive a complete overhaul and now features plug sockets, refurbished seats with new cushions, backs and covers, new carpets, new flooring in the toilets, refurbished heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, new wall panels, repainted vestibules, grab handles and grab rails, a deep clean throughout and a new livery in Greater Anglia colours.

The work was carried out by Arriva Traincare at their facility in Crewe under contract to Porterbrook Leasing who are investing £5 million into the upgrade of Greater Anglia’s eight three-carriage and four two-carriage trains which operate on routes including the Norwich to Cambridge, Ipswich to Cambridge, Ipswich to Lowestoft and Norwich to Lowestoft lines. Every three-carriage train will also have six more seats installed.

The project is expected to be completed in early 2018.

I did think the carpet looked new in terms of how clean it looked, but looks very similar to what would've been originally fitted; does look old-fashioned.

At least it is carpet

how are they planning on achieving this improved Sunday service when they’ve not agreed anything with the union. They’ll be running the service on pure good will alone. I won’t be doing any more sundays than I currently do! Some will, most wont.

Speaking with a good friend who works at TfW last night.
We had a hilarious conversation regarding future developments.
Drivers told, they were getting new trains in the new year in class 153s.!
That went down like a lead balloon as they used to have these 20 odd years ago as 155s,so hardly new and they were awful even back then!
Expect Pacers to still be around even as late as May 2020.
Hilariously he added, the vinyl were put on to stop them falling apart lol.
He doubts 230s will ever see service in Wales and the 769s aren't gonna be the success they envisaged if they even do ever enter service that is!
On the horizon will be 4 rakes of mk4s.
And 170s from Anglia which we already know about.
Regarding Pacers, there are no plans to withdraw ANY for the foreseeable future.
It is the opinion of many he says, that the future is a long way off with regards to new trains and a full PRM mod railway.
Btw,they are still having issues with 175s
He say the Valley lines will become all Metro, and the only real change we will see is when Civity trains arrive in the early 2020s,then they will dispense with 150s,158s and 175s
I suspect you already know this, but he says the situation atm is pretty dire in both North and South Wales.

That's a nice blend of already-announced details, messroom gossip, and the view from the footplate. :) Thanks for sharing it with us.

@Chris217 does your good friend who works at TfW know anything about the 3 more 170s that will supposedly be transferring this weekend...? I can't find any schedules on RTT :p

We had a decent discussion which as sad as the situation is,I found astonishing and hilarious tbh.
Yes he mentioned 170s which will be pressed into service as soon as possible.
Although an improvement on stock, they are hardly new though.
The biggest depression will be the introduction of more 153s.
As he is a train crew supervisor
    He says everyone hates them!

There is no date for 230 introduction and the 769s severely delayed.
By the time they are finally introduced and running in service,Its expected they will become a stopgap prior to brand new train introduction.
I was quite interested in the metro system.
Something in the line of tram-trains for the Valleys running at Street level at some locations in Cardiff.
TfW do have big plans....or as my friend put it...pipe dreams!

You're surprised to find out this information now? TfW's plans for the Metro have been public knowledge and available to read about in detail on the TfW website since June 2018.
It's also not pipe dreams. These are fully costed and detailed plans that have been given the go ahead and have been signed off by government.

The 769s were never staying in Wales for the long term, and were/are only ever meant to stay in service until the Stadler City Links and Flirts are up and running.

Pipe dreams was my friends opinion.
He was only stating what he knows now and believes to be true.
Obviously TfW do have big plans.
Let's hope all goes in their favour.
It's a long time coming though.

What’s a train crew supervisor? A supervisor over both guards and drivers??

Ive been to union meetings where there’s many positives about the 230’s.

there’s nothing “hilarious” about the south getting all the newly refurbished and newly WSP’d 150’s and the north getting nearly every 153 in the country. (As an aside, I don’t hate them, I actually like driving them)

nondriver has been told they’re getting new trains and we all know the difference between a new train and a new train hand me down.
I now want to know what “issues” the 175s are having??? Other than really crap cab climate control, the trains are pretty good. Even 107 is back to 3 cars.
I think you need to stop listening to your mate. If he’s some kind of supervisor, I can almost guarantee he’s not been in the crew room for very long.

Does anyone know if the 153s from GA will be made PRM compliant or if they get a derogation too?

Like I said earlier,it was a conversation we had. He has only confirmed what we mostly know from what we read on here.
Yes,there are bold plans, but a long time coming in his opinion.
Yes,he is a supervisor of train crew that is guards and drivers. 17 years I think?
The job title used to be called train crew supervisor, although they call it something else now I think.
He's a good friend so I know when to take things with a pinch of salt.
Our chat was hilarious for the language used, but not repeated on here for obvious reasons.
Ones that stuck out was they'd rather keep the Pacers than have 153s.
And,it would have been quicker to throw wires up and use redundant emu's until new trains arrive lol.
The future should have been electric, not diesel!
That's what happens when all the promises of electrification are cancelled.

Strange! He didnt mention the 37s.But
If I were allowed my 2p worth,I think they could have been better utilised on the Marches line.
Having said that though,we should have our 67s+mk4s soon.
We talked about those too....expect a delay into service!

With regards to 230s and 769s. He says if they ever enter service,it wont be for very long, although I hope the 230s can prove themselves.
Mainly the reason why TfW are getting extra 153s though.
If you like driving them, then you will be in your element.
The only direct pacer replacements should be the 150s cascaded from other lines replaced by 230s,769s and 153s.

The 170s will be on dedicated routes and not tied in with Valley lines network.
So he expects some massive duty roster patterns changing.

He says it's a shambles atm.
I think the title of this thread explains it in all of the replies!

Does anyone in here know anything about the 3 170s that are supposedly running from Norwich to Cardiff this weekend...? The claim was made by @168001 but I haven't been able to find any schedules on RTT...

According to @dk1 202/204/206 will be moving "at some point" - perhaps this weekend as claimed...? :p

TfW won't get all of their current and extra 153s compliant by January, there will still be some outstanding 150s that won't be compliant as well. So derogations will be needed.

Right so @168001 has since said that the transfer will be 2 units, and that it's scheduled for late Sunday or Monday.

I'll assume you mean resources manager as they are about the only ones who organise drivers and guards, but either way I can't say if be overly happy with the detail that you've put in as opposed just just the information. Also they are unlikely to be involved in messroom discussion.

So let's have a look at your points, the 769's.
Ordered by ATW as a stop-gap whilst the PRM mods were made to the fleet, so there's never been an intention of long term.

    The additional 153s.
The Rosco providing the 769s have apologised and offered the 153 as a way of saying sorry, not sure if its a long or short term sorry but it's something.

    Mk4s.
They won't be on the marches in December, maybe on the north Wales diagram but that depends on training. As the 1st set hasn't been delivered to TfW yet then apart from instructors there hasn't been any training so far.

    230s
They are behind, sadly I can't say I'm surprised.

    New trains
TFW have said from day 1 that it will be 2021 before the brand new trains arrive, they can't just jump to the front of the queue, but the orders are placed so short of anything drastic happening they will turn up. I think CAF are a little behind with the Northern an West Mids orders so that may have some impact.

All of the above are not new information and can very easily be found in ATW and TFW press releases at the time.

    As for electrification...........
Well we've seen what an outstanding success all the recent projects have been to know full well it wouldn't be quick, cheaper or easier, not forgetting the fact you're back to square one of having 2nd hand stock.

I'd happily bet that all 30 Pacers will see in the new year. The 153s are supposed to cascade all the 150s from North Wales onto the valleys. Hopefully they'll run in pairs but who knows.

The TfW press release and articles in RAIL and Modern Railways have stated that the Pacers will be confined to the Penarth - Rhymney line working in pairs. Will 30 Pacers be needed for that? Plus, thinking aloud, if all of the 153s are moving north, will that mean the Bay line and the City line are worked by Pacers and not a single 153?
I guess it depends on how many 153s and 170s TfW have delivered and in service by end of December/start of January

Working on everything being in place in December there will not be enough work in the North for all the 153s especially as more are expected increasing the fleet to 22 so they will still be present in the south. Without detailed counting, probably over 20 Pacers will be required. The total figure would be more like 25 to allow for the Maintenance Spares. What actually happens will have to be pure conjecture at this stage with much stock still to transfer in.

Ideally though at peak times, City line trains need to be double 153s as a single 153 is not sufficient, as @DanTrainMan185 has told us

That would be a sensible idea but they would need to stay together all day because of the implications of attaching/detaching at Cardiff Central and the impact on the operation and pathing with such a high volume of services.
