Another day and another cancellation of 1W13. Starting to think it should be removed from the timetable completely as from personal experience it is 50:50 at best

What issue are you having with the Wi-Fi at St Pancras? It's fine for me.

I can't get the login screen to come up, so can only (sometimes) get the free service - and often that doesn't actually allow any data, so my phones (I've tried multiple devices) warn there's no data and seek another SSID or network.

Now, I have to say that the only times I try are always down on the lower level platform and there could be a problem with a single access point. What I should remember to do next time is attempt to login upstairs first, as that could be what the problem is.

Ultimately, for some months I've been unable to get Internet access down there. It's mildly annoying but not the end of the world.

Hopefully the plans for Network Rail to offer 4G on its network to the public (I assume entirely separate to GSM-R, and merely allowing access to sites) could mean that St Pancras eventually gets full mobile coverage.

I mean, given you can enjoy mobile data and calls on the channel tunnel, it doesn't sound like it should be that hard.

At the very least, operators should be invited to install mini/macro/nano/femto cells (or whatever) down there. They'd pay for the opportunity.

I've never had any of these issues, it works every time I'm on the platforms on TL in STP, so I think you might be a bit unluck!

Have to admit, not impressed with the 700 I was on yesterday. The PIS was showing the wrong stopping pattern, not a word was said, and folks kept coming up to me complaining. All I could say was, I'm just a passenger like you, I don't know the stopping pattern, All i know is it's stopping at Burgess Hill and Brighton, nothing more. I work for Southern, this is a TL train, If the driver says nothing, then nothing I can do. Welcome to the future. I did try and look for a way to contact the driver without using the pass com, but after searching 3 coaches, could not find a panel*. When we got to Brighton, the concourse was full of miffed of punters as the PIS said Hassocks, and we did not stop.

Mind on a lighter note, one woman came up to me almost shouting that the train was going the wrong way, the next stop was East Croydon (as we were heading south). I had to explain to her that the destination was Brighton, as it said on the PIS, and that East Croydon was on a list of stations that it was (or had, or should be, or could be) stopping at.

*After looking through the whole train I did find a conductors panel 4 coaches away, but TBH, I don't even know if any of my keys would have activated the PA/CC system, or what it would do to the systems if I had.

As I said, I'll try logging in elsewhere in the station. Once a device is set up, it should authenticate automatically and I might be able to get it working.

I'd also like to see if Wi-Fi Calling works on EE or Vodafone.

I still think 3G/4G in the station is a must - and that obviously means the train will remain connected throughout the core too.

When I tried while having a 10 minute wait for the next train on the Thameslink platforms at St Pancras a couple of weeks ago (the screens on the platforms were blank that morning so was unsuccessfully trying to check RTT) I was unable to get any mobile or wifi signal - my phone just said "no service"

So that is 3 for 3 on 1W13 this week and whilst not completely the fault of the actual trains the support behind them appears to be lacking (Driver availablity, fault rectification etc).

I am curious how seriously GTR management are taking this given it is now 8 weeks since introduction and we appear to be still having the same issues.

Are GTR anywhere near to having all drivers and fitters fully trained up on the 700s?

It's a three year process to getting the driver trained up. Don't forget it includes Thameslink, South Eastern, Great Northern and Southern drivers as well as commissioning runs etc. It's a huge programme.

As for fitters, well Siemens supplies those, not GTR.

Appreciate the complexities involved in this project, but has it been acknowledged internally that the plans are not delivering the expected results?

From my point of view tables plugs and wifi are nice to have but a relible service is a must have.

Yep put 700016 into the depot this morning, a bit tight with the timings what with up attachment, but it's such a common move now that it's becoming a non event.

Thank you, much appreciated. Any idea yet when the Sutton/Wimbledon loop will start to go over to 700 operation?

Great thanks. That means a few more 319s might go off lease then

Not necessarily, because as insiders have regularly posted here, once the initial batches of 319s were transferred out it has always been the intention to release the 387s and 377s as soon as possible.

Just seen on another thread that a few more 319's are at Wolverton destined for Northern perhaps. Whether this is related or not I don't know as I know the loan 387/2's are now back on Southern

Yes, but in the context of your question that transfer had already happened, as far as their release from GTR is concerned.

I got it working today, on the low level platforms. The log in process has changed, so I guess they've looked at it. For one, you can now log in with Twitter - except with my two step authentication, I came unstuck because I had to receive a text code (no signal!).

But the the minutes free worked fine, so that's good. I'd hope not to be down there longer than ten minutes, although GTR does try its hardest...!

One day we will have mobile reception down there... One day...

Also OT, from your signature can I assume you're using one of the new midrange Huawei Nova phones?

Yes, and I keep forgetting that Tapatalk defaults to signature on when you install it on a new device - sorry!

I have the Nova Plus and it's okay. Nothing particularly special, but I'm reviewing it and probably won't be using it for that long. I personally prefer the Honor 8 (a variant of the Huawei P9).

It's not the first time I've needed an SMS to give me authentication to log in via Twitter or Facebook to give permission to use Wi-Fi, or even to get a password (O2, Virgin Media Wi-Fi) and it's a bit stupid if you're underground and can't get a phone signal!

The last time I tried Wi-Fi at St Pancras it had a normal login/password that I had to register with independently. Maybe that didn't work well for the amount of tourists not wishing to sign up for just an hour or two access at the start and end of their trip.

It's rather disappointing that the Eurotunnel has coverage, even at its deepest depth of roughly 76m down, yet St Pancras International LL doesn't.

I'd imagine it'd not even take much cellular equipment to extend coverage to the platforms, though a leaky cable system through the core would be better.

Huawei were keen to provide it for LU, perhaps they'd be willing to do a trial installation on TL instead ;).

Covering the platforms should be dead easy. Shopping centres do it (not always, mind) and Vodafone and other networks offer high speed 4G access in their stores. All that's needed is a decent backhaul and in central London that's not going to be hard to obtain.
