JohnFM has got his fishing rod out again.

We've come on here last few days to discuss the downsizing and potential movements of drivers and depots, and how it affects the Talent Pool.

We don't need another lecture

You already know how it affects the talent pool. If you can't work it out for yourself how on earth do you expect to get through life?

Hardly fishing, just trying to calm some folk down who seem to think that they are owed something, and yes, folk should know about the talent pool; some folk have been posting on here six months before they went for interview!

Get on with your lives. Live a bit because if and when you do start training you will be begging for a bit of leave by the end!!

So guys I thought I'd have a little catch up on this thread and a bit of an update.

So I've just finished my three weeks front turns and back into the class room this week. I do feel for you guys who are waiting I really do but on the other hand you need to suck it up now the time will come. When I see what goes into the training and planning it's a hell of a lot just to train the 8 people in the class room. Also on the in the class where people have had to wait over 2 years in does relative.

So this is the best advice I can give you guys now today in your current jobs, tomorrow morning or today Put yourself a holiday form in or book something to look forward too.

There's two reasons for this 1. When you start it's at least 16 weeks before you get s week off. And 2. The pace of the course requires a fair bit of home study which was expected.

This is my advice please follow it I been in your guys position so please don't think I'm being ignorant but this is what I would do.

Wow can't believe this thread is still going! I check back every couple of months. Sad to see the same people in the same boat since I created this thread over a year ago. I'm now with a D.I after a couple of months waiting, now the real work begins.

I think those waiting need to just crack on and apply for other jobs, book holidays etc as it's not worth stressing out over a start date that may never come. It's hectic at GTR at the moment and a lot of changes are planned in the near future with depot splits / relocations etc which will throw things up in the air. But, there has been a steady flow of trainees coming through since I started in October 2015.

Good luck all!

I am about to book my Southern DMI for some time in August, with a choice of Victoria or Norwood.

Would choosing either of these determine my depot? (Should I get the position!!)

Any help is appreciated.

No it shouldn't make a difference to your depot, I had my DMI at Hitchin but that's not where I applied to.

I have my DMI tomorrow at Blackfriars, but for trainee at Gillingham, so I think it's just where available DM's are. Good luck to us both!

How long do the assessments last?

Medical is three years, but the assessments... Do they run out?

I seem to remember reading the assessment last 5 years. Can't recall where I read it - it may have been on the DBS letter I got when they pulled the plug on recruitment after I passed my assessment with them.

I've got a funny feeling that GTR is one of the TOCs where the assessments only last for 3 years. I could be wrong (and hope I am), so please don't take my word for it.

More than that mate. My second stage assessment was May 2016 and DMI in June.

That's only 13 months ago. So in theory assessments valid for a tad under 2 more years.

The mere fact these assessments and medicals are valid for such a period should give us an indication as to how long these things could take.

End of Day.....

- The need for drivers and extra trains & routes to fulfil requirements is still there.

- Moving staff around depots doesn't fully fill all the gaps, even if it does short-term paper over a crack.

- If Govia lost the franchise, the incumbent would have all the same issues, if not more, as it would have to improve on what Govia left behind. The fact we've all been assessed and medical's up would save an enormous cost in money & time for whoever came in.

- Thameslink Southern is the urgent priority at mo, hence why depots North of London are on a temporary backburner.

Now, I'm sure some doom mongerer will be on here soon, telling you all to book a holiday, patronising you by asking whether you are the right frame of mind because you're impatient, or lecturing you again as to what a Talent pool actually is, but those same people say we will be the first to know from HR should there be any news or change of circumstances. Don't call them, they'll call you is what they say.

So its business as usual imho folks. carry on with the waiting game. Until you hear otherwise.

If there's anything to hear we'll hear from Govia.

On this forum in the past, we've had posters categorically say they will be this course and that course, and there hasnt been. We've heard there will be no more courses this year, then a course crops up. Apparently medicals that range from 6months - 5 years.

Lets face it, none of you know anything. I had a PM from a poster whos spoken to them telling me X, then on here, a different poster whos also spoken to them, saying Y.

None of us actually know anything, til we hear officially.
