There was a report in the Telegraph today that the Egyptian team has managed to get kitted out entirely in counterfeit clothing - their boss is quoted as saying they couldn't tell the difference "because both lots had the same logo on"...

Sorry

Old misery guts Giggs showed his true colours by refusing to sing the national anthem (amongst others)

If he finds it so difficult why on earth did he agree to be in a British team.

Like Kim Little the woman footballer who said she didn't sing it "because she's Scottish"

So it's a case of look at me I'm in the Olympics but I don't care who I represent as long as I'm on the telly.

Proper competition is now under way, with the Gents Archery ranking round completed this morning. A new world record has been set by Korea's Im Dong Hyun who scored an amazing 699 out of a possible 720. And he's legally classed as blind.
(That is "South Korea")

If the Archery ranking round is classed as "proper competition", then so are the football preliminaries, which started two days ago.

It'll be interesting to see how the medals are counted. By number of golds or by total number?

The answer, of course, is whichever one makes Team GB look better.

If Facebook is anything to go by then I'm glad I missed it - hasn't it just basically a massive history lesson via interpretive dance? Further, apparently there's not even been a note of Black Sabbath, The Who, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest or Oasis played (all defining bands in their genre who've changed the face of it worldwide), yet there's plenty of Dizzee Rascall and Rizzle Kicks, whose contribution to the industry is yet to be fully demonstrated, certainly I'm sure out of Iron Maiden and Rizzle Kicks, the former has made the biggest impact on the world and are more recognisable. Don't even get me started on every Tom, Dick and Harry stating that it makes them 'Proud to be British' - if it takes thousands of people prancing about like Ken Dodd on ecstasy to bring out that sort of emotion, then I really don't know what to say. Furthermore, how does it make you proud to be British - did everyone Brit personally have a part; surely pride largely stems from self-achievement, not from something greater than a person (i.e. a country) or someone else (i.e. Danny Boyle) put together?

Oh Well, wherever, wherever you are, London 2012's gonna get you. No matter how far.

Call me cynical but I wonder how many of these people supposedly proud to be British are proud enough to pay their full tax burden?

I was disapointed not to see/ hear anything by those bands you have mentioned and especially agree about the impact Iron Maiden has giving. Even though honestly i thought that era of music would be ignored.

The ranking is always done by number of Gold, then Silver, then Bronze, then overall.

Well, I thought it was rather splendid - especially the Industrial revolution part. The whole thing had an entertaining mixture of history, humour and pop - and well done to the lady who remembered all the verses of Abide With Me in those circumstances (I found it nervewracking watching, along with the choir boy who solo'd on Jerusalem). And Dizzee might not be quite my musical "scene" but fair play to him, he stepped up to the mark well (as did Mike Oldfield, who is my musical scene).

I'm also glad that Mr Boyle got a shot of the iconic Inter-City 125 in the opening scenes (along with the Pink Floyd pig :D).

They had that at the closing ceremony in China though. The new one that is - well a totally fake one in fact.

I have to say, this was the best opening of all that I've seen since ever! Truly amazing, enthusiastic and also humorous in practically every aspect! I was completely amazed how they managed to place living fields in the stadium and how they fully changed it and so quickly! The Olympic cauldron and its spark, the short films, the people... EVERYTHING was just amazing and natural.

You sure have to be proud of the work that was put into this. I just hope this keeps on like this all the way to till the end, not only the event itself, but also the city and the country.

My favourite parts were the change between the fields to the industrial era, the James Bond (Oh Your Majesty! That fake jump just shocked me! O.O) and Rowan Atkinson parts.

I was expecting that Big Ben was to be heard at midnight in the stadium, but I guess that wasn't important at all in the ceremony.

for someone who didnt watch it you certainly have a lot to say about it dont you

And theres only so much music they can play and obviously have to strike a balance between music from the past to music of the present - an awful lot of people who will know nothing of the music or the bands you mention. It was not billed as a musical journey of every band in that has come from these shores.

I wouldn't say so Clip - the prose I put together was based on what I could gather from my Facebook feed. Indeed, however they are defining bands in British music history, and certainly bands like Iron Maiden maintain a huge fanbase worldwide today - I would at least expect them to be played, even if no-one inside had heard them (which I doubt), as they are simply one of Britain's most defining sounds.
