I tried to order a ticket from The Train Line website and it charged me a £1 booking fee! So I went directly to the South West Trains website and ordered the ticket for exactly the same price without the booking fee. Do any members here use The Train Line?

Almost certainly not, for exactly that reason!

although, if you are buying expensive tickets, it may be worth it to try and get the 1.5% commission back.

It continues to amaze me that anyone still uses thetrainline- I suppose the fact they advertise themselves as being cheap on national tele draws in the suckers. It's even more astonishing given most of the TOCs have their web retail handled by thetrainline anyway.

the train line and national rail websites, both offered me the same prices.
Since when have you been able to buy tickets from National Rail?

Thetrainline advertise the correct fare, but then they add booking fees, credit card fees, postage fees, etc. They're little better than scammers.

I use TransPennine Express, 50% discount for students with a railcard :D

East Coast/Govia are better designed though.

They don't actually sell tickets though. They give you pricing information, but then direct you to select a site to buy tickets from.

So they would offer you the same price as trainline as robert2000 said. That's the point I was making.

They would, however they would not sell you at the same price; as Thetrainline add on fees.

You would think that websites such as East Coast and others would make a bigger deal out of the fact that they don't charge a fee for credit/debit card transactions and postage. Like the same situation with ALRs, not enough publicity leads to the public getting ripped off.

I prefere using East Coast as I like the layout. However I always look at the train operators website incase there is a discount with them.

For example going with Southern from London Victoria to Portsmouth Habour was £3 if booked on Southerns site or £5 if booked on other operators sites.

South West Trains use Trainline (like many other TOCs) for online ticket sales.

As part of a TOCs franchise, they cannot charge you a booking fee for selling tickets. As trainline acts like a travel agent, they can charge a fee to cover their costs (e.g. postage).

Thetrainline sometimes sell invalid tickets though!

Preston-Bristol Parkway SVR restriction code 2S - not valid before 0754, yet thetrainline.con allows you to make a reservation for the 0616 ex Preston with that ticket! How does that work then?

I'd have thought the same too, although XC make a very big deal out of it; handing out freebies on stations, adverts on their trains, TV adverts and billboards and so on all saying how they don't charge a fee and can sell you any ticket for any train journey in the country.
