Hi all,

Pictures from my UK trip are now up on line. Collections are broken down into day by day and a separate collection for the Eastleigh works open day.

Eastleigh 100 - Saturday 23rd May 2009:
Pictures from the excellent works open day held by Knights Rail Services and The Railway Magazine.
http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1703455.html

Day 1:
A jaunt on the North Wales Coast from Holyhead to Chester and back again.
http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1701190.html

Day 2:
An early start from Holyhead on the 0532 Holyhead - Cardiff WAG express, followed by a trip on the Cardiff Bay shuttle and one of the Valley branches. Then it was onto Taunton with the FGW loco hauled service. Voyager to Exeter, 159 to Salisbury and after a long day a 3 car 158 to Southampton.
http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1703440.html

Day 3 of the UK trip stays local around Southampton with a trip to Eastleigh for the open day and in the afternoon to Brockenhurst to see the DRS 37's pass through the station with the wessex man railtour.
http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1703444.html

Day 4 sees a trip along the south coast from Southampton to Brighton to visit the Volk’s Electric Railway, the World’s oldest operating electric railway.

After visiting the VER, it was time for a quick dash to London on a pair of FCC 319's through the Thameslink tunnel to West Hampstead Thameslink. A short walk down West End Lane to West Hampstead North London Line station for a trip to Richmond on a LORO Class 313. After Richmond, it was a trip through home turf via Twickenham to Staines on a SWT 450 for a SWT 455 to Woking and the final trip of the night on a SWT 444 to bring me back to Southampton

http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1703442.html

Day 5:
The last day of the UK trip got off to a bad start. Due to an incident at New Milton, outside Bournemouth, all Weymouth / Poole - London services were suspended until further notice. Decided to hop onto the 0933 Southampton - Brighton Southern 377 to Fareham to get moving and then got a 444 on a Portsmouth - Waterloo via Eastleigh to Winchester. A short taxi ride later found me in Alresford station on the Mid Hants Railway for a spin to Alton and back again behind GWR 5205 Class No. 5224

Got the bus back to Winchester and then off to Southampton Airport for the flight home. The final photos of the weekend are from the air showing Southampton Docks and Eastleigh Works.

Evening folks,

Another bit of Irish railways passed into history today with the final MKIII Push / Pull passenger service. The honour fell to 6104, 6319, 6303, 6314, 6312, 6318 with the 0915 Galway - Heuston. The set was withdrawn upon arrival at Heuston.
Also a couple of pictures of 22041, the replacement for the Push/Pulls set are included working the 1750 Heuston - Galway.

Evening folks,

This evening was an interesting few hours, also helped by the sunny weather.

First off the mark was the Limerick Junction Thunderbird 079 hauling MKIV set 4002 + failed 215 from Limerick Junction to Heuston after an earlier failure. Then the 4 remaining MKIII sets were all in action with:

1710 Heuston - Athlone.
218 + 6 MKIII (7411)

1852 Athlone - Heuston empty
220 + 7 MKIII

1830 Cork - Heuston.
207 + 7 MKIII (7407).

2000 Heuston - Cork
216 + 6 MKIII (7404)

Also photographed were a couple of 22000 DMU's in and around Monastervin.

All photos are now online at http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1706839.html

Enjoy!

A bumper collection kicks off the week with an early morning trip to the Curragh to see the Tullamore - North Wall cement. Alas no cement ran due to operational issues but plenty of 22000 DMU's forming early morning passenger and empty stock workings.

A surprise return to the scene this week is the Weedspray train making its 2nd appearance for 2009. On Monday it went Portlaoise - Inchicore and returned to Portlaoise on Tuesday. I managed to photograph it at Ratheven, outside Portlaoise.

Late afternoon and early evening included a trip to Tullamore to see 224 stabled with the cement train, plus 234 on the 1710 Heuston - Afternoon at Portarlington. Finally an hour at Carn was spent in glorious evening sunlight to see 215 on the 1900 Heuston - Cork with a MKIII rake and the usual diet of MKIV's and 22000 DMU's .

All photos from the day are now at http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1710197.html

Hi all,

Undertook a Dublin Suburban ramble today from Sallins visiting Heuston, Connolly, Howth Junction, Bray and Greystones.
Pictures at http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1710197_25.html include DMU's 22000's, 2600's, 2800's, 29000's and EMU's 8100's, 8520's. Also seen was the usual procession of MKIV's on the Cork line and 216 plus MKIII's which operated a special 0825 Cork to Heuston to relieve heavy loadings on the 0715 Tralee - Heuston service.

Evening all,

This morning 082 hauled crippled 6101 on the last stage of its long journey from Athenry to Inchicore. This movement was done in 3 stages: Athenry - Athlone, Athlone - Kildare and Kildare - Inchicore. It departed Kildare behind the 0935 Laois Traincare - Heuston empty. Photos of the unusual movement at Kildare, The Curragh, Sallins and the Iron Bridge outside Sallins. In the afternoon it was down to Thurles and 22007+22017 worked a 1805 Thurles - Limerick GAA special after the Limerick - Waterford Munster Hurling Semi-Final match at Thurles.
After the trip to Sallins this morning I stumbled across an interesting event in Monastervin Village. The Draw Bridge which carries the R424 road over the Grand Canal was being raised to allow a narrow boat from Athy to pass through.

All photos from today are now online at http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1710197_49.html

Finally one LUAS photo from yesterday at Connolly: http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/p58919064.html

Plus the usual diet of MKIV's and 22000's at various locations on the Cork line.

A few photos from the last two days:

1: A MKIV trial train from Inchicore to Mallow ran on the Thursday, again in connection with the ride comfort improvement program. Unusually the train was only 7 vehicles long, instead of the standard 8 car length. The Citygold (1st class) coach not being available for this trial.

2: The Showtime Express is back! Unit 22013 worked the 1040 Heuston - Killarney "Showtime Express". The first Showtime train for about 15 years. It is reported by sources in Killarney that 85 people travelled from Dublin to Killarney for the weekend break.

3: 234 1615 Heuston - Ballina, 7 MK3 at Meelaghans Level Crossing.

Hi all,

A somewhat unusual update to the website tonight.

Majella Foley (from Banteer, Co. Cork) and Kieran Gallagher (from Dungloe, Co. Donegal) were married in St Furseys Church, Banteer, Co. Cork on Saturday 27th June 2009.

To transport the 190 Wedding Guests from Killarney to Banteer for the Wedding and afterwards back to Killarney for the reception at the Malton Hotel, Killarney they hired a 3 car Intercity Railcar from Iarnrod Eireann. The train had been specially prepared at Laois Traincare for the happy occasion.

Here are a couple of pictures from the event.

The plan: Meet a friend after work and catch up over a few pints and dinner.

That part happened and finished just in time to capture MKIII International coaches No's. 6203 & 6205 leaving North Wall bound for Naas. Managed to photograph them at North Wall, Clontarf Road and on the M50.

Thanks to H Gricer for providing the transport for the chase!

Also included in the update is a couple of photos of Heuston in the evening rush hour.

Evening folks,

Yesterday I took a trip to the Midleton Branch for a long overdue update showing the completed work on the branch from Glounthaune. I had planned to spend most of the day in the area but due to some unforeseen circumstances I didn't arrive until late afternoon. Pictures of 175 on the driver training at Waterrock Level Crossing and Midleton, plus 2600 & 2700's class DMU's at Glounthaune.

Just under 150 years since it first opened on the 10th November 1859, the Cork - Midleton line was reopened today after losing its regular passenger service on the 4th February 1963, from then until 1988 special trains such as G.A.A. and Railtours visited the branch before it was placed under a care and maintenance program and eventually fell into disuse.

Work on rebuilding the line from Glouthaune to Midleton has cost €75m and on Thursday 30th July Noel Dempsey, Minister for Transport officially reopened the new service linking Cork City and East Cork.

Evening folks,

Three updates to the website this evening.

The 1st is from a weekend visit to the Downpatrick & County Down Railway in Northern Ireland. The RPSI's no. 3 was providing services on this day. An excellent visit as usual and we had to stand on our trip back from Inch Abbey so business must be good!
http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1736378.html

The 2nd update is a collection of photos showing Belview Port in Waterford with container trains plus 22000 DMU's being deliveried off the ship from Korea.
http://thewanderersirishrailphotos.fotopic.net/c1735827.html

The 3rd and final update is photos from this evening at Killenard showing 22031 1725 Heuston - Limerick, 22035 1745 Heuston - Westport, 232 1630 Cork - Heuston MKIII set instead of a MKIV set and the last photo shows 225 on the 1800 Heuston - Cork.
