Evening all,

There was a bridge strike at Portlaoise during lunch time today when a Nolan Transport lorry with a flatbed trailer carrying large pipes failed to pass under the bridge. One of the pipes fell of the lorry as a result. If you were driving behind it you would have got a fright!!

A couple of pictures of the aftermath: http://thewandererphotos.smugmug.com/Trains/March-2011/16303177_bs2Rz#1235111539_5WhyT

Good evening all,

Photos from a day on the Kerry line at various locations between Killarney and Tralee are now online at http://thewandererphotos.smugmug.com/Trains/April-2011/16431028_8WMpW#1253869281_PpF2kcB

Also included in the collection is photos of the increasingly derelict Tralee and Blennerville Railway at both of its stations at Tralee and Blennerville.

Locations visited today include:
Yellow Quarry
Currans
Ahane
Tralee
Gortatlea
Minish
Ballybrack.

It didn't all go to plan today as the 1130 Mallow - Tralee was terminated in Killarney due to late running and I was waiting for it in Gortatlea. Thankfully the wait wasn't to long as word came through on the grapevine from Mallow that it had departed that station approx 35 minutes late. Despite that setback it was an enjoyable day travelling to various places between Killarney and Tralee.

Good evening all,

An update to The Wanderer's site with photos from the early evening in Lisduff on the Laois / Tipperary border. The Irish Girl Guides held their 150th anniversary in Thurles today and two special trains ran before and after the event. 22041 and 22045 went empty from Laois Train Care to Thurles to form specials to Limerick and Heuston.

Also at Lisduff was 077 with a rake of the new autoballaster wagons which have recently entered service along with Tamper 740 and Regulator 703.

Good evening all,

Today's update is of a couple of pictures in the Portarlington area on Sunday 8th May featuring The Knock Special from Claremorris to Waterford, the 1900 Heuston - Cork and the 1905 Heuston - Tralee.

The Knock Special was worked by a 3car class 22000, No. 22001, a far cry from the days of a 071 loco and 8 or 9 MKIII carriages.

Photos from today are now online at: http://thewandererphotos.smugmug.com/Trains/May-2011/16858931_LTQjV8#1282554181_Pz3skDp

Also, some photos of the weedsprayer train on the Midleton Branch have been lying in my email inbox the last few weeks. Good evening all,

This afternoon I took a trip to Cork to photograph the hybrid 2600/2700 unit on Cork Commuter services. To cope with a shortage of 2600's (units away for repainting and other repairs) Limerick has loaned Cork the Hybrid Unit to help out and ensure service reliability.

Locations include:

- Portarlington
- Cork
- Midleton
- Glounthaune
- Cobh
- Ballyadam Bridge
- Killacloyne Bridge
- North Esk

Good evening all,

A large update this evening with photos from Saturday, Sunday and today including the recent MRSI tour.

The first update is photos added to the September collection. On Saturday before I headed to Belfast for the railtour on Sunday I took a trip around the Dublin Suburban system visiting Phoenix Park, Raheny, Connolly, Arklow. Phoenix Park was to be renamed Navan Road Parkway later from the Sunday. The final pictures from Saturday are of 8456 at Great Victoria Street. Photos from the Sunday are from various locations around the NIR network such as Great Victoria Street, Belfast Central, and Coleraine.

The latest pictures in the September collection are from Tuesday 27th September and feature 075 and 082 on per way trains in the Portlaoise area, along with 080 on the Wheel Carrier from Inchicore to Limerick. One of the Per Way trains included 5 of the new spoil wagons:

The 2nd update is photos of the MRSI Farewell to the 80 class railtour:

In the last update for September, 083 worked a Autoballaster train from North Wall to Charleville today. It was looped in Portlaoise to allow the 1100 Heuston - Cork worked by 221 to overtake. Both trains were photographed passing Clonkeen between Portlaoise and Ballybrophy.

Good evening all,

On Saturday 1st October the RPSI ran a 2nd Mystery Train tour, this time to Limerick. Outward traction was provided by 072 and the return trip was worked by 080. The outward trip was photographed at the summit of Ballybrophy Bank, while the return trip was photographed at Hopes Bridge, near Kilmullen.

Also on Saturday I photographed all severn MKIV sets on the Dublin Cork service at various locations in Co. Laois.

In a somewhat unusual move the IWT Liners operated on Bank Holiday Monday 31st October 2011. Both trains were photographed. 209 at Cloncoher (Down Train) and 215 at The Curragh (Up Train).

Also photographed at Cloncoher, while waiting for the down liner were 22002 + 22013 1130 Heuston - Galway and 22016 1105 Galway - Heuston.

Greetings all,

Two updates to the website this evening.

The 1st features the Awbeg River Bridge Renewal works over the October Bank Holiday weekend at Buttevant, Co. Cork. Thanks to JT42HCW for allowing me to use the photos.
http://thewandererphotos.smugmug.com/Trains/Network-Improvements/Renewal-of-Awbeg-River-Bridge

The 2nd update has pictures of unique "cue ball" 22007 on the Mallow - Tralee on Friday 4th and Saturday 5th November 2011. Also uploaded to the same gallery is pictures of the 22000 stock transfer over the mothballed line between Waterford and Rosslare Europort on Friday 4th November. 22003, which had been stranded since the Rosslare line was closed at Lansdowne Road due to flood damage to the River Dodder Bridge was replaced by 22009. Thanks to Mr. Church for allowing me to use the photos.

Good afternoon all,

I was in the Dublin area on Thursday and Friday of this week so the latest update to the website has pictures from Connolly, Heuston, Tara Street, Pearse and Drumcondra. Also featured in the update are both LUAS Green and Red Lines.

Finally, a chance encounter with the Waterford - Ballina DFDS Liner at Cherryville Junction while driving along the M7 on Friday revealed 209 at the helm so I diverted into Kildare to photograph this arriving from Waterford.

The pictures start at: http://thewandererphotos.smugmug.com/Trains/November-2011/19965474_rN5Ggp#1579203382_dpzXBcZ

Good evening all,

I took a trip to the Belfast area yesterday to see some 450's (not many out) and the daytime 80 class Sandite working. Locations visited include: Portarlington, Heuston, Connolly, Belfast Central, Botanic, Greenisland, Whiteabbey, Trooperslane, Lisburn, Moira and Portadown.

Today I had to visit Dublin for an appointment and having received Gen on which diagram the Emirates Advertising Livery DART was on I heading out to Clontarf Road to intercept it. After an absence of about 10 years, an advertising livery has returned to the DART. Units 8529 + 8530 & 8531 + 8532 have been reliveried into a Emirates Airlines livery to promote that airlines new service to Dubai and beyond from Dublin.

Pictures start at: http://thewandererphotos.smugmug.com/Trains/November-2011/19965474_rN5Ggp#1597890521_zqKfd7H

On my Belfast trip yesterday I also took two videos.

The first is of 8458 leaving Whiteabbey: http://thewandererphotos.smugmug.com/Trains/November-2011/19965474_rN5Ggp#1597946151_GQX8cj2
The 2nd is of the 80 class Sandite rolling through Whiteabbey: http://thewandererphotos.smugmug.com/Trains/November-2011/19965474_rN5Ggp#1597967220_bQKCs3p
These videos are at the start of the collection for November. For some reason Smugmug likes dumping them at the start, instead of the more usual correct date and time order.

Enjoy,
The Wanderer.

Think I prefer the Eircell DART! Nice shots.

Me too, I preferred it to the Guinness livery also. It was quite evocative of the late 90s as mobiles became more common. I remember seeing a smoke damaged Eircell liveried unit back in July 2001, after the Fairview depot fire. I think the AOAs disappeared something after that.

Evening all,

Just one photo from earlier this evening of 22035 calling at Portarlington Station with the 1625 Heuston - Limerick: http://thewandererphotos.smugmug.com/2011/December-2011/20443936_jJpmCZ#1640572878_7z5KdSW-L-LB

I intend to begin a new occasional series of "Featured Galleries". This will be used to feature various items of interest, such as a particular type of Rolling Stock or Railway Systems.
The first featured gallery is the London Underground, which brings together over 300 photos of the system between 2007 and 2011 into one single collection.

Good evening all,

On Saturday I took a ramble down the Nenagh Branch. Once in Limerick it was out to Limerick Jct to see the Waterford branch set and back in to Limerick before we headed to Galway on the 1415 from Limerick. 2715 + 2724 worked all the services I travelled on.

Photos from the day are at: http://smu.gs/xq3Qyn

Also, Noel Enright has provided me with several photos showcasing the Container and Timber Trains, plus an odd Ballina Branch passenger train the other week. His photos may be found in the Featured Gallery section at: http://smu.gs/xS9QIY

Good evening all,

LUAS Red Line services are currently suspended in the City Centre due to a fire in an abandoned building on Benburb Street on Saturday 17th March 2012. Up to Monday 19th March there was no LUAS service between Blackhorse - The Point / Tallaght. With the Commuter Rush due back on Tuesday LUAS Operator Veolia came up with a plan to extend tram services into Heuston use to Centre Bay Platform to perform a double shunt so trams could reach the outbound line at Heuston Station.
During a visit to Dublin this morning I was able to photograph Tram 3008 performing the double shunt and the offending building on Benburb Street. Photos begin at: http://smu.gs/GDqWL7

EDIT: LUAS Link now fixed.

In a 2nd small update some pictures of Kildare featuring new 22052 on the 0515 Westport - Heuston, New Station Footbridge recently installed, 22012 and 22052 at Heuston and a video of the 1700 Heuston - Cork Express passing Ballykillane with 224 and 8 MKIV 4003.

Good evening all,

This collection covers both the Saturday and Sunday of the tour, including the Light Engine movement of 186 from Connolly to Athlone on Saturday morning.

Also some general odds and sods from the weekend of the Modern Irish Railway scene from Portarlington, Killomenaghan, Athenry, Ennis & Rosskelton:

Morning all,

The latest update to the website is photos of the South West Corridor from Dublin Heuston on Tuesday evening of the evening peak departures.

Locations include:
- The Iron Bridge (Sallins).
- Stacummy Bridge.
- Clondalk / Fonthill Rd
- Heuston Station.

The highlight of the evening was 223 hauling MKIV Set 4005 and failed 232 from Portlaoise to Heuston. It had earlier failed at Portlaoise working the 1330 Cork - Heuston. As a result the 1700 Heuston - Cork and 2030 Cork - Heuston was worked by ICR Standby set 22045.

Good morning folks,

It's been a busy couple of days with loco hauled ICR's and visits to Roscrea and Killarney. All the pictures are now available at http://smu.gs/JGEPyn

Highlights:

Thursday:
076 hauled long term stopped 22033 from Inchicore to Laois Depot following repairs to vehicle 22633 and modifications to 22133.

Friday:
Photographs from Portarlington with 079 on the Autoballasters and passing MKIV's and 22000'S. Later that evening I visited Roscrea to photograph the 1820 Ballybrophy - Limerick and 1705 Limerick - Ballybrophy services crossing at the Station.

Saturday:
A trip from Portlaoise to Killarney with 219 on the 0900 to Cork and 22008 on the 1130 Mallow - Tralee. This service terminated at Killarney due to late running of the 0900 Heuston - Cork service from Thurles onwards.
Later in the day 22008 was again photographed at Killarney with the 1535 Mallow - Tralee plus some general photographs of Killarney and a Aircraft passing over Killarney.

Sunday:
The morning starts off with 22032 at Yellow Quarry and 22003 at Minish. In the afternoon it was time to travel back to the Midlands (on 22037) and the day finishes off with a few pictures from Carn Bridge of 207 on the 1630 Cork - Heuston.

Good evening all,

This evening I headed back to Roscrea, this time to photograph two of the soon to be withdrawn 14 year old 2700's crossing each other at the station (I had got two 2800's crossing on the previous Friday). As I had a bit more time on my hands I also photographed the Branch train at Ballybrophy, Borris-in-Ossory, Grange Beg and Quakers Road Level Crossing. All I need now is a 2700 and a 2800 crossing at the station!

Good evening all,

Due to other commitments I wasn't able to travel on the RPSI Mystery Train to Galway last Saturday, instead I photographed it at Monastervin and Portarlington. But thanks to a contributor I now have a selection of photos of the tour in Connolly, Galway and departing Galway passing Renmore. The railtour pictures may be found at: http://smu.gs/MwAsC3

The 2nd update tonight features old and new at Galway with new ICR sets 22049 + 22054 alongside soon to be ousted 2719 + 2722 on Sunday 24th June. Plus on Monday 25th June 2012, Irish Whiskey Manufacturer; Irish Distillers chartered a MKIV set from Iarnrod Eireann for a 1750 Cork - Heuston Special. The set operated to Cork at 1325 from Heuston and was pictured at Rosskelton. The return special from Cork was pictured at Kilbride. 223 and 7MKIV 4008 did the honours.
