05:36 Don-MIA this morning was 6 car, all in use, first 4 only message being played for Meadowhall
15:41 from Doncaster to Manchester was 6-car, looked like the Cleethorpes train at about the same time was 3-car (didn't get a clear look though)

Lots of short-forms showing on Journey Check today. Can probably get away with it for today, possibly Thursday and Friday too.

think what TPE are doing is trying to get the North, Cumbrian and Scotland services actually running. Cancellations a lot lower. The only way they can do it is short form 2 hull’s and a Cleethorpes run to free up a couple of Class 185’s

Due to a late start today I was able to see 09:08 off Sheffield go past me as 6-car, however I couldn't see whether all coaches are/were in use.

08:08 off Sheffield looked to be 6-car this morning albeit with the back three in darkness. Did someone mention upthread that 6-car cannot be used at Dore, or would the back 3 just be locked out of use due to positioning and/or lower commuter numbers until tomorrow?

The Selective Door Opening, SDO, can't be operated at present without a second guard. There's a shortage of trained crew so it seems they're economising on quiet days. The previous service had only 3 today and that needs beefing up more than any. Stock seconded to other routes to mean far fewer cancellations overall today.

Givec it a few more weeks and the current nightmare will be over as trained crews can cover all scheduled services. .

Journey Check seems to not have been updated today as 08:08 off Sheffield was 3-car. Looked busy but not rammed.

Journey Check does however have 12:53 Airport to Cleethorpes as full and standing from Stockport, halfway through the working day! Is this one only 3-car today then? The half an hour earlier EMR shows as having run also, and roughly on time, however that may have only been 2 coaches.

17:11 Sheffield to Manchester Airport was 6 carriages tonight. Only the rear 3 carriages were going to the airport though.

08:08 from Sheffield was 3-car today and nothing on Journey Check. A little disappointing on the first "proper" working day of 2020. Sure Killingworth can provide us with an update on the hour earlier service

Sorry, not around that early today and no local reports. Will have to set the alarm earlier tomorrow!

Quite possibly because a 185 seems to have been pinched for the Anglo-Scot route.

Same again today - 08:08 off Sheffield was only 3-car and nothing on Journey Check. However things were a little different this morning due to a fatality on the line at Penrith late yesterday and stock having been consequently out of position.

Conductor on board the 0808 was reporting that a train at broken down at Cleethorpes last night and that this was the reason for the short forming.

It was down to a failure on the Barton-on-Humber - Cleethorpes route. Although within the Northern franchise it was going to move to East Midlands. That hasn't happened yet, but it was operated by a single Northern 153. For a combination of unit and crewing issues the first return trip of the day hais long been operated with a TPE 185 and crew. Others may be able to rreport if it was that TPE unit that failed, or the substitute for the old 153 that failed causing a TPE 185 to seconded.

I'd assume the 5.09 from Sheffield was 3, the 615 was 3, 7.07 was 6 (well filled wiith over 100 boarding at Dore), 8.08 was 3 as noted above and 9.11 was 6.

8.10 arrival iinto Sheffield was 6.

Local reports haven't provided more details from today, but since the New Year users of East Midlands on the Sheffield - Manchester section are disappointed to be finding more short forms of a single 158, or a 158+153 Even when 4 carriages it may only be 2 x 156, or even 158/156 + 2 153s. They no longer seem bothered with the route.

Absolutely nothing on Journey Check this morning. This is TPE though so something will definitely be 3-car instead of whatever it should be!

Yep, the 07:07 off Leeds to Manchester piccadilly (ex Hull). Absolutely rammed.

You should place the blame the problems on EMR purely on Greater Anglia. They refuse to give up the 156s - so what exactly can EMR do? They have being totally shafted by Greater Anglia and their problems with the 755s. Unfortunately EMR will get flak for something they have no control over will Greater Anglia dodge another bullet.

they like TPE didn’t plan their new rolling stock introductions very well. However their failure impacts other customers. As EMR are all safe conservative seats the DFT is happy for Greater Anglia passengers to have a higher level of service then EMR. The whole thing stinks but the tone was set under EMT when the franchise was not allocated enough stock to operate it.

Nope, 3-car today but at least Journey Check has been updated (quite a few short-forms today by the looks of things!)

There seem to be more 6 car sets running, but many with the back 3 locked out of use. Wonder what's causing this, and why only some trains are affected.

Could be anything from no working cab to cab between the two units, to no 2nd Conductor which is required for 6 car operation at Dore on the South route, and quite a few local stations on the North route.

What happened to ASDO, contracted through franchise agreement for 2018 delivery?

2 guards are also required for all stations East of Doncaster until the appropriate infrastructure in the 4-foot is installed and working. As I understand it, the trains have had their equipment for months, but it takes 2 to tango on the railway!:rolleyes:

Not anymore, the rear units are being locked out at Scunthorpe on the way to Cleethorpes (and until Doncaster on the way back) to get around the requirement for 2 Conductors, because the number of assist jobs required would be astronomical since every train now calls at Habrough (you'd probably have to double the number of jobs at each depot to cover it all, yet you still only have the same number of Conductors available).

C-ASDO equipment is completely ready to go (both on train and the beacons on the track), but it can only come in once all crews are fully briefed. All South route depots are already briefed, but Manchester crews (who also work South route services Airport-Sheffield) are not due to ongoing traction training on new trains so it cannot be turned on.

It failed, badly, when introduced last July - the on train equipment threw up dozens of door related faults. So they (sensibly) elected to focus on ensuring all the faults were understood and fixed completely before reintroducing it.

I have no doubt that it's either DfT or Network Rail's fault.

What a shame there's no corridor connection between the units. It would make life simpler.

As it is there's an announcement passing down the Hope Valley that Dore passengers should move to the front carriage of the train. The last time I travelled I'd boarded in the dark at the Airport when the train had 3 carriages and I was facing forward in the front carriage. Now travelling backwards and still in the dark, concentrating on an electonic screen, I was disorientated when the anouncement came and set off to what was then the front of the train - to find myself getting out at the far end of the platform with all 6 coaches behind me! I had to laugh at myself, but it's not a good way to operate a railway.

ASDO should resolve part of this, but patience is needed until 2023 when the platform may be extended. Totally walk through trains seem to be history.

I have memories of walking through possibly 10 coaches at York to find a seat in the 1950s. Travellers would know you needed to be in certain carriages to get out at some stations. I also recall steam hauled services pulling forward to allow access to non-corridor stock at short platforms. It may still happen in places today.

Yeah, I forgot to add that the staffing requirements would be astronomical in my post earlier, thank you for helping me out ;)

I didn't realise it was a training problem that was holding up the SDO, makes sense though on the modern railway!

With the final 350s due to move to LNWR soon, expect more short-forms to cover 185s for Scottish services!
