142s (Pacers) have the absolutely ridiculous nickname of 'nodding donkeys' - can anyone tell me why?
A long time coming, but...
A nodding donkey is one of those oil well pump thingys where a "horizontal" beam rocks on a central pivot, much in the manner of a short wheelbase type like a pacer.

365/465/466 - Notworker
357/375/6/7 - Electrasauna

Theres a few for you.

I think only the class 465/466 "Networkers" were nicknamed "Notworkers" because of them keep failing when they were due to replace the Class 415 EPB units and this is why the EPBs stayed until march 1995.

I dont think the class 365s "Networkers" were ever called "Notworkers" correct me if im wrong anyone.

390 (Pendolino) - Wasp Don't Understand thus one but they do remind me of a P****S if you look at th shape of the front carefully you will know what i mean.

Yeahhh... you're not the only one who's spotted that... They have a rather rude nickname which I won't repeat here, as well.

I personally don't have many nicknames for trains except I call 158s hoovers, as thats what ours sound like here. They don't seem to revv so much as they just make a vaccum-ey noise. 170s and Voyagers also sound like hoovers.

314 213 is 'clunker' because of an odd clunking sound she makes when the driver applies the throttle from a stand, followed by a loud AC hum from underneath the floor. All 314s that I know of make the hum, so I call them Power Stations on Wheels, because thats literally what they sound like, when you're sat right behind the driver's cab.

Class 378- moving corridors, because of them having no doors between the carriages, and barely any seats
Finnish Trains:
VR Bo-Bo DV16- 'Vempu' (Don't know why)
VR Bo-Bo SR1- 'siperian susi'(wolf of Siberia), because they were built in Russia/'Kaalihakki' (cabbage cage), don't know why. Full info.

One thing I don't understand though, why does the VT 57s get called Ronnie's as well? I've seen somewhere saying its a Ronnie, thought its a normal VT 57/3... :s

Ive got to say i love this thread...Never knew half the nickanmes on here before...

As for the VT 57's - hadnt heard them being nicknamed Ronnies aswell apart from 57601 due to its original Porterbrook livery... but i suppose that goes for all the 57 fleet...Though i know there main nickname seems to be bodysnatchers...becasue of the GM engine replacing the original Sulzer one...though i still love them...Ok heres mine...

Class57 / 601 Purple Ronnie, Body Snatchers, Genetically Modified
Class 153 / Dogbox...Where that came from i dont know...
Class 170 / Turdostar...self explanitary really...

And from Rail Magazine recently, FGW's 143619 i think, was dubbed Evil Edna buy Chris Leigh...

Hey why are 150s known as "furnaces"?

I think the engine cooling system is coupled to the heaters, and in order to keep the engines running in hot weather the passengers get roasted. (I may be confusing this feature with pacers.)

You are right, the heat take off for the saloon on a 150 (and most buses) is between the engine and radiator. So having the heating on helps keep the engine cool, however when this is most needed (in summer) the sallon really shouldn't need heating.
