Thats the problem with doing assessments privately if you don't get a offer within the 2 years you have paid money for nothing.

I thought the assessment results were good for 5 years?

I was led to believe that when a company advertises jobs they have to put an external advertisment out if the numbers are over a certain number. It is political thing I think because if you take internals, qualified drivers etc this in turn will not reduce the unemployment figures!

No such thing mate. All drivers vacancies are advertised internally for several weeks, qualified drivers who want a transfer and such, if no driver takes the vacancy then trainees will be taken on internally depending how quick they need a driver, again if no takers the last resort is external. All your big tocs do this, i have never been in a company where as drivers jobs are advertised for external before offering current employees the chance first.

Many ads go out for both internal and external at the same time unless the internal transfer list is live. This is only for trainees as jobs for qualified drivers are advertised separately

I know those who applied will find out their fates tomorrow, but is it verbatim that no external applicants will be offered assessments or just word of mouth?

There were plenty of people doing the interviewing, it was the relevant Area Production Managers who were doing them. Are you sure that info wasn't specific to a certain depot?

Yer it was Doncaster and Worksop, but they said it was pretty much across the board at every depot.

I wonder how many ex DBS drivers who got the bullet several years ago when the axe came down have applied to go back?!

not many as ASLEF carried out a huge campaign involving many hard hours work to get the redundant drivers jobs as they did the same when Fastline went under. So I would imagine unless they live next to a DBS depot and they need to work close to home they will be staying where they are.

Could anyone on here tell me what fleet DBS use? I'm aware of the the class 66's being at the core and also 67's and 92 electrics! I'm guessing as a driver you would be expected to cover vast routes?

Also if anyone knows what is bulk of DBS work? I'm guessing mainly logistics and aggregate but is there any specifics/contracts I should be aware of?

If anyone works for DBS currently I'd appreiciate the information, feel free to message me

Thanks

Huge campaign to get the drivers jobs? That's news to me.

I lost my job with a TOC that ceased operations and the union helped me get a job and I didn't even have a break in employment, also they helped my colleagues who all managed to get jobs driving with different TOC's, I was told at my branch meeting by Mick Whelan himself that ASLEF had been working hard over an 18 month period to assist in getting the DBS drivers relocated with drivers' jobs and in fact that nearly all the drivers who were made redundant had been offered alternative driving jobs.

Some of the Scottish drivers were helped with getting employment with Scotrail.

In the North East,a rep from Northern attended one of the meetings.
Total number of vacancies with Northern (with 30+ DBS drivers looking for work)?

0.

Over 25 further DBS drivers looking for work a few short months later.
Vacancies were 'found' at Cross Country.
Total number of vacancies?

2.

Now, I'm not claiming that jobs should just be invented because us poor railstaff need them and I will back ASLEF all the way when necessary (as in a few half-witted comments on this very forum) but I'll also call them out in situations like this.

PM me for the background to a very unsavoury affair that happened in Teeside about 4 years ago.

Im sure all this is a result of the industrial action last year. DBS has to be seen to be recruiting Drivers to fill the understaffed depots, instead of relying heavily on Rest Day work / borrowing staff from other depots / companies !
Some places have redundancy / relocation issues going on right now , where other places just can't seem to cope with the workload. If you applied for Eastleigh / Peak especially, I think you have more chance than others , although , as others have said , there are a lot of staffing issues still to be sorted out around the country , and i would of thought that these issues will be sorted first ? :)

Nothing heard from this external applicant either.

Then again, still nothing heard from FGW after applying in July last year for a trainee driver position at Bristol andpassing the first stage of assessment back in October. HR will only ever tell me that they are 'waiting to hear back from the recruitment manager.'

It seems it is standard practise for both freight and passenger TOC's to dangle the carrot of false hope in front of the many who would love this job and have already invested a lot of themselves in researching thoroughly just to get an application form through the sift.

Still not given up hope yet though. Don't let them grind you down!
