I've put in an application for Chester. I echo the question, why is it miserable there? :P

After the personal statement part of the application I was expecting further questions. Have I missed something?

No. That's the main part of an arriva application. It has to be a good one! My last application was only that and I got to interview stage. Compared to first trans pennine it's a very easy application form

Are you based there? If not why would you say it a miserable depot?

Nope, freight now but I've spent many any hour there. It's the most hostile mess room I've ever encountered and crews from any other depots say the same. I don't know what it is about Chester, they have a nice little route card,no pacers and no Cardiff management sticking their nose in but it's just mess room full of bad attitude and it's the same every time I've been there.

Maybe they're drivers from other depots just on their PNB at Chester then. ;)

A good route card, and no Pacers? You'd have sold me if I was looking to transfer oop north.

I have never seen what you describe but then again I might be used to it :)

Chester is internal only now.

If that's the case they will only take any internal applicant do anyone applying form outside the Arriva (DB) group have wasted their time

Mine was a full page last time and a full page this time. I didn't want to go too over board but I did want all the key words in like safety ECT.

I messed the interview up big time last time round but at least I know where I went wrong!

The above is incorrect, yes the position is now closed to external candidates but that is only because the quota of external applications has been reached, internal candidates have more time...internal and external applicants will all be considered for the positions and the best candidates following assessments will secure the positons, whether they are internal or external is irrelevant.

Does the change to the advert not just mean they're not accepting further external applications, rather than the vacancies now being internal recruitment only?

Yeah mine was quite a big personal statement but I didn't want to babble too much, I put all the key words in and explained my experiences and qualities hopefully it stands out! glad I got it in quick

Thanks for the reply. I've seen an actual arriva application form which had all the usual stuff tagged on for drivers such as shift working, dealing with emergencies etc and in the in the instructions about the personal statement it said there would be further questions.

I've applied for a few jobs at arriva over the years and they've all been the same. I think I'm starting to get somewhere now so I can only keep trying eh.

Chester is internal only now.

I thought by law they had to say if it was for internal people. If you have a look at their website or other websites, it often say Internal applications only. Or it says it in the job description or skills.

If anything saves them time, not having to sort out all the non internal applications.

very harsh and pretty much the biggest pile of rubbish I've ever read if i am totally honest!

been in there many a time and have never seen an ounce of hostility!

probably doesn't help the freight drivers that have pnb's there when they just sit tucked in the corner in their hi viz reading their books and not speaking to anyone!....if you are sociable there anyone will speak to you and make you feel welcome, if you sit in silence what do you expect?

any externals applying to Chester I'd disregard what pacerpilot has said and not let it cloud your own judgement as if this guy truly believes Chester's mess room is the worst on the network he must have been in very FEW mess rooms!

I work at Chester station for Arriva and can back this up. Great place to work.

Hello everyone, just registered but have been reading the forums for a while. I've just finished my applications for the Machynlleth opening. I used to live in Aberystwyth so I know the area a little, but I don't know too much Welsh! What's the time period between sending an application and the next stage of communication? It says the proposed start date is May 2015. That's a bit quick isn't it? Or not?

Welsh isn't a requirement so don't worry about that.

Successful candidates will start in May so the recruitment process won't be a long and drawn out one and you can expect to hear either way within a few weeks by e-mail and status update in your website account.

Thanks! Isn't it quick compared to some companies? Not that I'm complaining! I can order a pint in Welsh but I don't think much else!
