We've now had 11 posts without discussing Rugby World Cup trains.

never mind - i will try and change that although i am really looking forward to the Rugby World Cup.

I have asked LM about extra trains for matches at MK and Wembley ( and London/Brum generally) and they responded with a standard we are looking into it tweet.

The hateful Franchise FC ground hosts Samoa v Japan/Uruguay v Fiji and France v Canada while Wembley hosts New Zealand v Argentina & Ireland v Romania. Villa park also hosts South Africa and Australia so extra trains might be of use

Don't know why LM told you that, the National Rail page says the following:

Wembley Stadium (London)
Some London Midland trains between Birmingham New Street / Northampton / Milton Keynes Central / Tring and London Euston will call additionally at Harrow & Wealdstone and Wembley Central before and after the game.

Stadium MK (Milton Keynes)
London Midland are operating an additional service after games from Milton Keynes Central to London Euston calling at Watford Junction.

Villa Park (Birmingham)
London Midland are running additional trains before and after the matches between Birmingham New Street and Aston / Witton. An additional stop will be made at Witton on most trains between Birmingham New Street and Rugeley Trent Valley on match days.
Virgin Trains have a special charter train running between London Euston and Birmingham New Street. Passengers are advised that this service is only available to tournament spectators. Tickets for this charter train can be booked here.

Also on the WCML
City of Manchester Stadium
Virgin Trains have special charter trains running between London Euston and Manchester Piccadilly. Passengers are advised that these services are only available to tournament spectators only. Tickets for these charter trains can be booked here.

Is it possible for Virgin train services to stop at either Harrow and Wealdstone or Wembley Central? If not would one of the spectator only tickets include onward travel to the grounds?

I think it was the specifics i was after from them. How many extra trains, when, where to etc which may not have been available at the time

But I'm afraid you're not going to get specifics because, as I said in post 31, the expectation is that people will just use journey planners to find out what's running - problem solved as far as the TOCs are concerned.

They seem increasingly to be of the view that producing a special timetable, even just as an online pdf, or putting out some kind of summary, or telling the media what they're up to so the word can be spread that way, is so last year.

ATW will never tell you. They tell you to use Journey Planner

Presumably when Neil Warnock was the Palace manager. He often takes his teams on the train to away matches.

A lot of teams still travel by train to matches. Man Utd and Swansea have both been seen reserving entire carriages on Virgin / GWR services.

Many clubs travelling into London and some London based ones travelling long distances out of London frequently use rail, although Arsene Wenger being abused by his own fans when returning from Stoke to London last season didn't help the cause. There has been a slight change in attitude following Arsenal's bizarre decision to coach the team from London to Luton airport for a flight to Norwich a few years ago which attracted a lot of criticism as did Chelsea who also flew from Gatwick to Norwich.

I see EMT have an extra service on 10th Oct from Liverpool to Nottingham which is timed for an HST - will it actually be an HST and is this a first if it is? 1L99 2158 Liverpool Lime Street to Nottingham http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/J19005/2015/10/10/advanced

What has football teams flying short distances got to do with Rugby World Cup trains?

Any future off topic posts will be deleted. Thank you.

Will SWT still be sending 3 car 159s to Exeter when the 3 games (I think their website says) are being played down there or have they plans to strengthen them? Obviously Twickenham is the centre of attention!

Twickenham and Cardiff have been the focus of many comments, but it would be good to know if any extra services are being provided at the various other venues.

EMT are running some longer trains and additional trains to venues on their routes on match days in Leicester and Manchester and have a micro-site with the details. This somewhat contradicts the National Rail advice, but the only additional train to Leicester is one running early in the morning on Sunday 11 October; the rest are either strengthened or have additional stops compared with normal.

I've no idea but FGW usually run longer trains and manage to fit in a couple of extras between Exeter and Digby & Sowton when Exeter Chiefs play at Sandy Park.

These are Internationals though. I don't think after making a quick recce round Rugby location stations, nothing is being done apart from strengthening perhaps, although in the case of Cardiff, FGW are running specials from Bristol..

However, if one goes to National Rail Website there is a section referring to the events and what TOCs are planning for each venue.

But any strengthening into Exerer would be useless without the match day timetabling between Exeter and Digby.

I went to Exeter when Leinster played them in the HEC. The Exeter fans did advise that, although they would have strengthened Trains, access to the Platform at Digby could be restricted, and if you did get on the Platform to be sure that you got on the Train going in the right direction. I took one of the many Buses that were laid on which picked up/dropped off at Exeter Bus Station and Exeter St Davids. Didn't find it any problems either getting in or out, (even though the weather was bad as most of the UK was under several feet of snow).

FGW have got Digby & Sowton pretty well organised post match these days. They check all tickets (and sell them if necessary) then get everyone to queue up depending on which direction you're travelling.

The trains are full but I've always managed to get on the next available service.

I dont think SWt are offering good advice. Not all trains will be busy, surely trains from Clapham to Guildford will be normal.

A South West Trains statement said: "In light of this, we strongly advise that you make alternative arrangements such as working flexibly, staggering working hours to travel earlier, taking annual leave, and swap to walking or cycling where possible on Friday."

It warned rail passengers stations including London Waterloo, Vauxhall, Clapham Junction, Putney and Richmond "may have to wait for some time" to board trains during the Friday evening peak time from 4pm.

Did they close the car park today at Twickenham and implement a queuing system? That's what they are doing tomorrow.

Rugby World Cup match - 19 September*

On*Saturday 19 of September*there is a France vs Italy Rugby World Cup match at*Twickenham*stadium*with akick off time of 20:00. All trains through Twickenham on this day are likely to be extremely busy, especially between 16:00 and 19.30 and from 22:00 till the end of service.*

A queuing system will be operating after the match. To allow us to operate the queuing system after the match, the station car park will be closed all day on 19th of September.

Extra trains are running to Twickenham from London Waterloo/Reading before the match and from Twickenham to London Waterloo/Reading afterwards.

Customers for trains towards Richmond, Clapham Junction and London Waterloo should use the entrance through the station car park (Entrance A).*

Customers for trains towards Wimbledon via Kingston, Reading via Ascot and Windsor & Eton Riverside should use the main station entrance (Entrance B).

That's the normal procedure for a big match at Twickenham and has been for as long as I can remember. I don't know for certain but I suspect the car park was closed today as well.

Not a good evening at Twickenham tonight. Twitter reports a fatality. Though official line is accident.

Will that now be Newcourt (NCO) now that it's opened, and is much closer to Sandy Park?

Please refer to the following thread for some details:-

www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=120817 Post #41

The BBC have got hold of this story and making it big news. According to Journey Check , The Millenium Stadium in Cardiff is actually somewhere between Paddington and Cardiff.

At least FGW have done a lot in additional provision of Special trains from London and Bristol. What's going to happen, I wonder, in regard to travel to travel to venues where little or nothing has been done.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
XC running a 17 17 Cardiff to Birmingham with 10 carriages, appears to be double 221. Passengers unable to board trains at Bristol Parkway or Filton Abbeywood earlier.
