I was on a train through Bristol the other day, and realised I'd written down the station code for Bedminster as BDM instead of BMT. BDM is of course the station code for Bedford, despite the fact there's no M in it (I assume the M comes from Midland). This led me to wondering what other stations don't match their station code, eg where the name doesn't match *A*B*C*:
NR Code Station Name
AFK Ashford International
BAJ Baglan
BHC Balloch
BDM Bedford
BOC Bootle
BBS Bordesley
RBS British Steel Redcar
BSU Brunstane
BSV Buckshaw Parkway
CWD Creswell
DMG Dinas Rhondda
DOT Dunston
EBD Ebbsfleet International
ELW Eltham
EXG Exhibition Centre
GMG Garth (Bridgend)
BKQ Hamilton Square
HND Hanborough
HPQ Harwich International
HXX Heathrow Central
HAF Heathrow Terminal 4
HWV Heathrow Terminal 5
HHB Heysham Port
HOZ Howwood (Renfrewshire)
HNX Hunts Cross
JCH James Cook
KBX Kirby Cross
KSW Kirkby Stephen
LPG Llanfairpwll
LWR Llanrwst
CHX London Charing Cross
KGX London King's Cross
MIA Manchester Airport
MFT Mansfield
MHS Meadowhall
MES Melton
NWX New Cross
NXG New Cross Gate
BPC Penychain
PIZ Pickering
QPW Queens Park (London)
SRR Sarn
SIA Southend Airport
SAC St Albans
SNH St Helens Central
SIH St Helier
SAJ St Johns
SHC Streethouse
SQE Surrey Quays
WPE Wapping
WCX Wembley Stadium
A few of these are obvious - the Xs standing in for Cross for instance. But a few really confuse me. Why is there a K in Ashford? Why the B in Pen-y-chain? What the pacer is going on with Hamilton Square's BKQ?
Does anyone know why?
As an aside, discounting places that start "London", this is a complete list of stations where the first letter of the code is not the first letter of the station:
NR Code Station Name
RBS British Steel Redcar
BKQ Hamilton Square
DBG Mottisfont & Dunbridge
