On the class 172's and many other DMU'S the main loco number is at the front but there are also numbers on the sides what are they?
Thanks got itThe number on the side are the indiviudal carriage numbers - this applies to all multiple units as well. So, for example, if we look at unit 172005, it is made up of 2 carriages, which are 59315 and 59415
Similarly, if we look at a 378202, it is formed (currently) of 4 coaches: DMSO: 38002, MSO: 38202, PTSO 38302, and the other DMSO: 38102
So, usually the carriage numbers have some correlation to the unit number, but this isn't always the case, particularly in cases where units have been reformed (eg. 455/7s)
...and just wait til the 387s start. They will be the first MUs with 6 figure individual coach numbers just to make things more difficult!
The 387 and 700 will all have the last three digits of unit number in the carriage number, hopefully making it easy to spot what unit is what.
sense at last!
Again, more expectation amongst some on here that things like carriage numbering should be done in a way that is amenable to spotters.
What do you mean 'at last'?
What do you mean 'at last'?
The 150/1s, 150/2, 153s (as converted), 155s (when built), 156s, 158s all had the last 3 digits corresponding with the unit number!
There are probably more but they will do for starters!
edit-
170s, 171s, 185s are others.
Probably shouldve said "sense 'again' at last".
Basically i mean the 377s etc, most electrostar units the 3rd number on the coach does not correspond with the unit number except the 377/1s (correct me if iam wrong).
Sense again at last that they will now correspond again.
What about amenable to staff that just happens to be good for spotters too?
Tell you what, how about we give them names like on Thomas the Tank Engine?
Tonight's DMU is 150001, formed of David, Paul and Freddy.

I heard it's sibling in the week and one vehicle sounded awful... sounding much akin to a heritage DMU rather than a mainline DMU!I am sure the fitters at Reading depot could think of more appropriate names for that thing but I dont think we could put them on this family forum though!
