A friend did Berwick – London KX on Saturday last and wrote this to me
Interesting modern social interaction.
On the opposite side a woman with her feet on the opposite seat was quietly puffing on one of the new electronic cigarettes. Her daughter opposite. Her son on his own watching a film on the next seats along.
Small white puffs of "Smoke" rose from time to time as the "machine" slipped back discreetLy into a bag alongside the woman. The smell was obvious. My throat was getting sore.
Son..."what is that smell Mum".
Mother....".don't worry it is nothing ...it won't harm you ... I will tell you later"
As there is no live part to this type of smoking it seems that the user can go on forever . So after* half an hour of this I had had enough and called across to ask her to stop using the machine as it stank and was causing me problems. In addition ..."smoking is not allowed on trains...or any public transport"
She erupted. " I knew you would be a problem as soon as I saw you! "
"Vaping does not cause any problems. I travelled up yesterday with inspectors and police walking up and down ( something to do with the soccer ) and they did not tell me I couldn't "Vape"
"I don"t like the smell of your beer ( I had had a can of beer and a sandwich). If you can drink beer I can "Vape""
My response ......smoking is not allowed, having food and a drink is. Anŷway the whole carriage is affected .
Me...."It is not only is but your son was affected."
Woman ...." No he was not. He said nothing. It is just you. You are racist!" Yes...she repeated this in fact and we assume it is a new common insult as the woman was white. I was wearing a poppy which might have caused her offence and an indication of my character.
Conversation closed. She continued to puff but in the coach doorways. Due to the tense atmosphere we moved.
The train had no staff on it. There was another nutter pacing up and down complaining about others. And a group of loud but harmless lads further away.
Even at Kings Cross the gates were open and no staff.
The train was really quite empty but a potentially pleasant trip was marred by this selfish woman.
I later checked: the friend and wife had caught 17.12 ex Berwick

He said a lot got on at Newcastle.
It raises the old chestnut of no ticket checks, but raises the question of Vaping ........ is it allowed on trains?
