A propane tanker has caught fire near Stanlow. The Warrington to Chester line is closed to all trains at present as a result.

15:50 Manchester-Chester was sent that way. 16:50, 17:19 and 17:50 currently advertised as turning around at Warrington Bank Quay.

BBC got that wrong. It's near Chester and much closer to Liverpool than to Manchester.

This is when Diversion Knowledge comes in and ATW have been able to send there trams via Northwich, which is good.

The loco hauled set reached Manchester on the normal route from Holyhead, but the return 1650 Llandudno service seems to have been cancelled at Piccadilly.
Maybe it's not cleared via Northwich.

I always thought that there was a charter company that started somewhere on that line and one of there tours they used 67. So they can work the line it will properly be more of whether the crew sign the route.

Thought they might have just travelled via Stockport / Styal and Crewe to reach Chester instead.

Worked 17 50 Manchester Picc to Llandudno terminating Warrington Bank Quay then 5T32 ECS to Crewe. May require turning for morning. By the way, 67014 replaced 67022 today.

67s are cleared through Northwich due to them being cleared for freight services. It's much more likely ATW were refused permission to run it from Piccadilly to Stockport. (Northern can't get a path to start the 16:58 Stockport-Chester back at Piccadilly.)

VSTP now appeared in Realtime Trains for a 2045 Ellesmere Port to Liverpool Lime Street (via Warrington) ECS working to get the unit home.

I did wonder if, had the disruption continued for much longer, they would have found a Merseyrail route conductor and sent the unit via Hooton to Chester.

Probably not this, but more likely

This. Chester don't sign the loco and stock, and its only one link of Chester drivers (and all their guards) who sign Cheshire lines. Although it's a Holyhead driver, Junctions drivers don't sign the loco either.

I saw that on the BBC website earlier and I thought that particular junction was near Liverpool not Manchester!

    They are really useless.

Cheshire folk complain bitterly that the county "doesn't exist" at the BBC.
There is no local BBC city or county radio channel.
The BBC chooses to lump Cheshire in with either Manchester or Liverpool (or even with Stoke in the south).
The M6 is roughly the media border.

Well the line was only closed north of Helsby, I believe. It could have reversed there to reach Chester.

Well the move to Media City doesn't seem to have helped any!

I can understand with something like this going on signposting the nearest big city, but to get the location of this so badly wrong it really does make you wonder, it must have massively affected the Liverpool area directly, assuming it's not still doing so, not to mention all the traffic heading in and out of Wales through Chester.

Something like this will effect people from all over the country with both road and rail closed. I find it amusing that people 2nd guess and come up with wild and wonderful ideas on what the TOC's could and should do without the knowledge to make a constructive and possible problem solving post

According to one of the awful commercial radio stations (heart) one of the Liverpool Tunnels was badly affected

I find it surprising Llandudno Junction crews sign Warrington to Crewe given that line doesn't usually have any ATW services on it.

I think a lack of capacity between Stockport and Manchester would also be relevant though. ATW were unable to divert the 17:19 via Stockport despite that service being a DMU presumably worked by Chester crews.

Breakfast, Radio 5, Sports and Children are the main departments at MediaCity. While a number of Breakfast and Radio 5 journalists actually live in Cheshire, the ones involved with the news channel later in the day and updating the news website are still mainly London based.

If you refer to earlier posts correcting incorrect info, it would have been a Holyhead Driver. I should imagine ATW would have arranged a Route Conductor, probably from a Freight Company. Route knowledge was the reason the 17 50 couldn't have been diverted via CLC to answer an earlier question.

I missed that with someone re-quoting an earlier post after that.

The train that should have been used on the 17:20 Piccadilly-Chester was sent back to Chester via Northwich just before 6pm but it took 95 minutes to get back to Chester, longer than it takes Northern to get a 142 stopping at all stations. I think that demonstrates why ATW can't divert via Northwich at peak times even if crews are available who sign the Mid-Cheshire line.
