There is (full?) bi-directional signalling on most of the Trent Valley section (Rugby-Armitage), and between Sandbach and Cheadle Hulme.
No doubt it'll be on the enhancement list when the PSBs north of Crewe are replaced sometime this decade, maybe with ETCS.
Like your optimism, considering NR went through a phase of stripping out crossovers that allowed single line working. Also, with the push for green zone working across the board, using SLW for engineering works is also pretty unlikely going forward so putting it in for these rare occasions is unlikely to stack up.
Thought this section was re-controlled to Cowlairs recently? Presumably without changing the actual signalling on the ground.
Re-control is what it says, it isn't a re-signal.

Could they have split it at Lockerbie and moved it by road from there, or is 3 nights to get back to a depot the better option.
You'd have to have a location with good road access, and you need specialist equipment to lift the coach off of the tracks and onto a lorry.

I was wondering the same thing, but how easy would it have been to get the disabled unit onto a road vehicle, and there aren't any spare driving carriages sitting around so it probably wouldn't be any quicker overall (though it would reduce delay to other services).

Not forgetting a full OLE isolation and earthing , and possibly removal of the OLE. The recovery experts and professionals will have taken these factors into account.

Was it the driving car that failed? Because to move the rest of the unit without the driving car probably means moving it unbraked. Which I can't imagine is a wonderful idea for the far side of Beattock Summit.

Two of the three up engineer's sidings at Lockerbie are not wired, but road access for load like that through the middle of the town would be exceedingly difficult. I would have thought Kingmoor yard worth a shout.

Looked that way from the pictures up-thread.

It was the rear axle of the front bogie of the leading driving car. This is it on the skate in the UPL at Lockerbie.

Of course it is now running backwards towards Carstairs ; I assume under its own power albeit slowly at 15mph.The rear vehicle is where the problem is. Info says its an 11 car Pendo so the rear vehicle , with the problem ,woud be coach L , 1st class restuarant/kitchen car , if it was running in usual formation with 1st class at the 'London' south end. I would therefore assume it cant be easy to detach it from the train. Also weight could be a problem when they move it by road. Wiling to be corrected ..!

390138 will carry on to Abington tonight and then wait until a suitable time this evening to carry on
Arrived into Abington 179L. The original plan was Carstairs. So not that far off and crews will be on their time limit.

All being well should manage Polmadie tomorrow morning.

Indeed. I meant leading when the fault occurred; so I was insufficiently clear.

Its Coach K. 691xx vehicle. Only double voyager sets have coach L.

RTT schedule now in for Abington-Polmadie, timed to arrive at 02:46 tomorrow morning.
Roughly 3 hours to cover the 40 miles
I can't remember - are there many active sidings between Carstairs and Polmadie to recess it into if things don't go to plan?

Some locations that I know of, it could maybe go into are the Law Junction loops between Carluke and Shieldmuir, Braidhurst loops outside Motherwell, or into Newton South Connecting line (rarely used) in the event there's an issue.

I do think the timings are rather optimistic though particularly for the Newton section, 2km in 4 minutes would average 18mph, considering there's two flat junctions to cross, seems unlikely to me it'll be 4 minutes.

Lockerbie to Carstairs is just under 50 miles, It's been given 6hrs to get there. Average speed of 12mph or so. Given wheelskate is 20mph on plain line and 3mph over pointwork, the bigger issue will be how often it gets looped for traffic to pass.
I once had to time a Preston - Crewe move on wheelskates (Class 86 I think). One of the hardest jobs I've ever done!

I think it was dragged with a 57 on the rear to provide braking.

Yes. I believe the plan was for the 390 to haul the class 57 on the rear whilst it provided sufficient brakefore - in view of the trailing bogie of the 390 being isolated due to the wheelskate.
The bar coupled multiple units mostly have an arrangement to run with the brakes on the rearmost car isolated, but clearly not in this case.

Can't have both pans up. As they are bussed together it would cause a lot of problems when a neutral section is encountered. Only the rear pan is up, What you can see is the light that illuminates the pan cam as both lights are on. You can see the same lights on the roof of 80x units which seem to light up even when in diesel mode.

Looks like the pendo is running under its own power, there's no 57 coupled, front or rear

This is where I give a cheeky remark about the difference between "can't" and "shouldn't"...

You shouldn't have both pans up since they're connected - which means you can't have then both up when you cross a neutral section, at least not twice. :p

5S19 passed the protecting signal (439) at Carstairs at 01.05 and kept on the Down Main. A freight (484Q, whatever that is) has been following behind.

1S55 postal may need to overtake it aswell if it catches up, probably by running on the Law Jn loops.

484Q went through the loop (and headed off towards Wishaw), as did 130J (presumably the postal, 1S55 in proper reporting numbers), which had been passing Wamphray when 5S19 arrived at Carstairs. 130J left the loop at 01.50 and 5S19 restarted at 01.52.

EDIT: 130J arrived at Shieldmuir at 02.02, so the ‘letters for the rich, letters for the poor, the shop at the corner, the girl next door’ shouldn’t be late today. (If she is the girl next door, why are you sending a letter via the night mail?)

Early anonymous Valentine's card (from a shy railway enthusiast) :E

Meanwhile our stricken pendolino reached Lanark junction at 0215.

5S19 passed Law Junction without being held at 03.00. 400R, which had been held outside Lanark Junction for around half-an-hour was then signalled to run towards Wishaw.

EDIT: 5S19 passed Motherwell at 03.31, right away towards Uddingston. Only ten miles to Polmadie, but off my radar.
