That maybe, but is entirely besides the point.

Fair point. Infact, why don't the newspapers just replace all recognised phrases in the English vernacular with random pairings of words

As always (and I suppose I am as guilty as most at times) we jump to the mass media conclusions about an incident and a real life person rather than the facts. Dementia, Alzheimers and other forms of mental illness will hit a good percentage of people perusing this forum. It's easy to go along with the herd and join the 'bash the nutter' bandwagon but with care for the mentally ill and particularly the elderly sufferers, being diminished, if not eliminated, then one should expect a lot more incidents to occur.
(after all it's cheaper to let them kill themselves than provide care)

Hang on, you mean you manage to unfold your "newspaper" far enough to see the pictures? You clearly don't catch properly crowded trains!

I make a point of not catching crowded trains !

Although I can assure you, I only read reputable (within reason) newspapers

You've never read the Metro, have you? :P

Is it possible to make a train journey without being forcibly exposed to several hundred thousand discarded copies of it?!

The Metro is a particular bugbear of mine; in an age where we are supposed to be environmentally aware I cannot comprehend how it is deemed acceptable to churn out ton upon ton of pointless second rate 'newspaper' produced for absolutely no reason at all other than to make money out of the advertising. And then they have the gall to pretend they are 'green' by plonking the odd recycling bin on a station here and there!! Grrr.... <(

I always put my Metro back in the dispenser racks at my destination ( I commute Zone 2 to Zone 2) and it really annoys me if I'm travelling after the morning and there are no papers because they've all been cleaned up and binned. If they could encourage them to to be handed back into racks at the end of journeys, they could be reused by off-peak passengers and they might not have to print as many or spend as much time clearing them off trains. Leaving Metros around is littering as far as I'm concerned. Reusing is much better for the environment than recycling after all.

I wouldn't mind reading a Metro in the evening or an Evening Standard the next morning - the news is so boring anyway it doesn't really matter.

Does anyone know if the publishers make any contributions to TfL/LUL/etc for the extra cleaning and disposal costs they cause?

This post from 2007 on District Dave's Forum suggests that those who distribute on TfL property do, but the rest don't.
I do though remember something more recently about newspaper distributors paying for more recycling of old papers, but I can't find it currently to check memory.

The problem with mental heath problems is that they are very difficult to be physically seen.
Because of this it is very easy to see stories like this and jump to the conclusion that the guy is a moron. When actually he may have some serious problems that may need to be addressed.
Hopefully the Gentleman will get the help that he needs, and will be the better for it.
It helps to remember that just because you cannot see an illness, it doesn't mean it isn't there.
