I think it could be interesting to find out what are the tastes of people on the forum about music.

Club music for me (includes HandsUp, House, Electro, Garage........)

We have Classic FM in the default setting in our car, as this is good background music and does not distract you when you are driving.

The music I listen to most frequently is

    Rock
    Classical
    Blues/R&B
    Pop

and Folk which is not on the list

Some of the classifications I do not recognise at all. HandsUp? Trance?

What happened to reggae, ska, skiffle, punk?

I didn't want to put 250 poll options

    HandsUp is Cascada, Manian, BassHunter...

Trance is Robert Miles, Armin Van Buuren...
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
I've put the main music classes.

Put reggae in Soul, Funk, etc. :D

Classic FM is a wonderful station, they play some excellent, calm and enjoyable music. And as you so rightly said, unlike the heavier stations, the music will keep you concentrated and focused. If I can't get a signal to Classic FM, which unfortunately tends to happen a lot, I'll pick Heart. More rock and pop based, but it still has some good playlists.

I usually have either Radio 4 on or use the walkman on my phone though a tape with a jack.

one of the bars I go to on saturdays plays a lot of stuff I remember from the 70's:

    Sweet
    Slade
    Gary Glitter
    Dawn
    Middle of the Road
    Brotherhood of Man
    ABBA
    Tony Christie
    Status Quo

    very entertaining ;)

I have a selection from all of those genres in my collection, but I have more 'indie' than anything else, so I guess 'pop' is the closest.

    Good!

Rock and indie music is my music of choice, however I avoid those two bands at all costs. And I'm a born-and-bred Mancunian!

Rock in the main for me, but as long as it has a good melody, most is ok with me
Therefore 'Modern Music' is generally 'Non Applicable' in this household...
Oh and the best decade for music was the 1970's!

I assume these to be popular beat combos or popular crooners. I have never heard of any of them; admittedly I rarely buy any album by anyone who has not been around for less than 20 years or so.

Not according to The Blues Brothers. You don't have Country or Western. 8-)

And skiffle presumably in Pop. But traditional Folk music doesn't really fit in anywhere obvious.

I don't specifically 'follow' a genre as the stuff I like comes from all over the (musical) place. I THINK that most of the stuff I like stems from 70's Prog Rock, so I opted for "Rock, Metal..." option, but I also like instrumental Irish music (e.g. the original 'Riverdance'), the Cocteau Twins (who are in an untitled genre of their own, in my view), The Groundhogs (whe WERE a blues band, but moved on) and quite a few German bands of the 70's (Neu, Tangerine Dream, Faust, etc).
I have a feeling it's been done before, but (in my case) it would probaly be better to ask "Who do you like", rather than "What do you like". Just a thought. Another thought could be to request what people have in their collection(s) and attach it to a post on an Excel Spreadsheet.

Is there really a genre of music called Hands Up ?
I dread to think what that must sound like

Mostly Rock for me (in most of it's guises)
Although I must admit I am quite partial to a bit of Reggae too

I had to put 'club hands up' as my vote but what the hell are they?

Im a massive house music fan but christ on a bike..

Everything i listen to can be as far ranging as old blues and R&B(ask your dad) up to the newer soul funk and wobbly house/Uk bass stuff..

Im no fan of rock music though..
