I think that he wants reasons for the vote and not just the vote.

I personally would go for either the MK1 because of the bouncy seats, all windows open, and its door hinges are outside which makes it look cooler. Or the MK3 because its quiet, is licensed to go fast and it is slam doored instead of the automatic doors on the mk4

Because as GV has just said, I want reasons not just a poll, which tells you nothing about why a certain thing has done to become 1st place.

Anyway for me its the MK1s.

You could put your head right out the window, and it was quite a smooth ride to, comftable, and that 'Slammer smell you use to get.

I also noticed a smell on a MK1 that is completely unique and relaxing. My perfect railway journey would be in a first class compartment (I prefer travelling in compartments because its quieter and more comfortable) in a MK1 coach over the old style bolted track with the ail holder things stretching all the way up the rail, travelling through beautiful scenery (e.g Scottish highlands or the Settle & Carlisle), just picture that thought for a minute, Bliss

I know just what you mean...:D

I'd have to go for a Mk1, first class, open during the day, compartments at night, with the lighting switched to 'dim' for the ultimate in relaxation and comfort...

I'm a huge Mk3 fan too, though. In terms of refinement, they're top of the tree.

How many voting for Mk1's have travelled longer journeys day in and day out on them. Yes from a nostalgic point of view but if ride quality and ambience are the deciding factor then a Mk4 mallard refurb wins hands down.
The unique smell in Mk1;s is usually damp very common when they were steam heat,

I've travelled on one from Charing Cross -to- Hastings on a MK1 and the nice scent of the MK1 got me to 'Knod off' for an hour, don't know if that counts!

Mk 3 by far, I cannot see how any of you could even consider the Mk1 except that most of you are entusiasts. The question was which of these do you think is the best, for comftability,Smooth Ride,Space,Looks,Smells, noise and the Mk3 beats allother classes with all the answers.

I have to go with the Mk3 as well as, just don't like the slam doors as I would rather replace the slam doors with power doors and it can be done as the Irish Rail Mk3s were built with automatic plug doors.

if my facts are right (they probably aren't but who cares?) the 442 was built using MK3 coaches, they were originally slam door but were converted to automatic doors at one point. I am not sure whether my facts are right because I have never been on one or seen one except in photographs

Not quite right- the body shells were built specially for them, but they are essentially mark 3 carriages, and they had power doors from new.

I like the MK1 for the smell for one, comftability, and that nice feeling you get that your traveling in style, and that altogether look it has that represents the railway, in that it was used on most regions!

I could keep complimenting the MK1 but I dont have all day!

...but most passengers want a quiet, smooth journey. Openable windows, thrash and clag belong on preservation railways and charters, not day-to-day travel.

Although, aircon stock ain't exactly silent inside. There's always at minimum a hum from the aircon system.

An aside: on the Airbus 380, there's been complaints that they're too quiet inside- from the crew! When they're on their bunks getting sleep, on other planes the noises (combination of engine noise and skin friction) drowns out passenger chat, making it easy to ignore. The smoother skin and better engines of the super jumbo make it quieter, meaning that conversations can be much more easily overheard. Much harder to get to sleep when you can follow what people are saying...

Mk 3 for me, then 4, 2, 1 in that order. I wonder how many of the Mk1 enthusiasts are thinking of the excursion experience rather than actually thinking of the coaches. Ok, so most of my Mk1 experience was commuting towards the end of its life. But, even in their present incarnations, the Mk3 are excellent.
No one seems to be going Mk2 yet!

mk2 though is almost two entirely different types, isn't it? You've got the early (original, a, b, c) ones with openable windows, and the later (d, e, f) with aircon and electric heating.

I was reading this months "The Railway Magazine" and the MK2 is farely quite dangerous campared to the MK3s and MK4s,but I was thinking how dangerous a MK1 would be in a crash im guessing quite crushed and worse off then the MK2s.

Mk1 generally a lot worse - it's built as a fairly lightweight body on top of a heavy steel chassis. This means that there's a real danger of the bodywork being crushed if carriages ride up in a collision. Later coaches are integral, meaning that the coach is essentially built as a long tube, with more inherent strength.

MK3's win hands down especially the EMT ones
MK2's next (the latter ones with air-con) anyone remember the noises the brakes made when they was on?.Only downside with the MK2 was them damn doors to get to the vestibule they was heavy especially carrying a hot drink!!.

MK4 next comfort yes but i dont like being sealed in.
MK1 last due to the coldness off them with all the draughts on them and also on late night trains you could be vunerable to drunks and weirdo's and also their safety.

,
Not quite , the MkII evelvolved with time. The origonal MkII and the a's were very simmilair , then the b,c &d were one family, the b being standard , c built to take air con and the d built with aircon , except for this and the windows they were one group, the e should have been the final build but due to the delays in the MkIII production the f was produced . It was recognised that the MkIIa &f were the finest and the b , c & d the worst that is why they were scrapped so quickly.

A bit limited in my experience but Mk2 as used by Virgin on the last XC workings were my favourite. then comes the Mk1, specificaly the first compartment on a CIG. Then the Mk3 or rather the 442 variant. All rated by general ambience rather than any particular aspect of the ride. Never been on a 225 set so I can't comment on the Mk4.

Mk2 as used by Virgin on the last XC workings come top for "ambience"? I suppose if you like trains with broken doors, seats, toilets and AC, which haven't been deep-cleaned for a decade, then that'd probably do it...
