the A to B is worth a go too but unless your a station grycer then do it on a semifast. Any other help in planning your bash then PM
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---
and also the route from EDB gets you the Fife Circle via Kirkaldy plus the forth and Tay Bridges.

Suspect therel be a good bit of bridge bashing on the forth now the refurbs finished and the scaffolds down

As per an earlier thread, we are planning a fourteen day All Line Rover next summer.
We have started planning, and highlights will be:
*The Western Sleeper from Reading to Penzance
*Full HST run from Plymouth to Glasgow, or Dundee to Plymouth
*Full HST run Kings Cross to Inverness (or reverse)
*WAG service Cardiff - Holyhead
*Far North and West Highland branches
In addition:
*Sunday service to Okehampton
*1553 SuO Norwich-Manchester - Lived near Ely for twenty years but have never been round the West Curve and its the only service that does.
*0922 Fo Stockport - Stalybridge

for your Scotch moves, id do the KGX, INV, followed by your far north before going to dundee for the HST. To do your west highland, how about a Euston to Fortbill sleaper move in the other week? That way you get some good loco milage and a bit of WCML seeing as your other milage is ECML stuff

I've almost confirmed my plans to do a 14-day ALR myself, just need to determine if I can afford to use most of my holiday time in one go, then determine the dates and book them off. Expecting to do it in May or June, mainly to avoid the school holidays as much as possible. I keep thinking about where to target first, a firm-ish plan is required so I can plan the sleeper moves and book Travelodge stays. Pretty sure the North West will be dealt with first, with day 2 on the Southern Region I think.

Should be a good trip for mileage <D<D<D If I have much at all to do in terms of passenger networks afterwards, I'll be shocked!

Just got around to working out what track I still need to do. Apart from PSUL, short curves and freight lines, I make it 54 lines still to do.

Mostly in Scotland (11), East Anglia (9), South Central (7), South West (5).

Longest lines still needed are
Lostwithiel – Penzance (49 miles)
Ipswich – Norwich (46 miles)
Carmarthen – Fishguard (43 miles)
Crianlarich – Oban (41 miles)

Would be happy to get any of those under my belt, but more likely would be to clear "Midlands" (Corby - Manton) or "North West" (Morecambe - Heysham)

I've got to travel 257 miles to do the last mile or so into Milford Haven - I've been past Haverfordwest, but only to Robeston, which diverges from the passenger line just north of Milford Haven station. <(

Just remembered Cornwall. I've got as far as Falmouth, and so have to do the main line out to Penzance, plus the St Ives, Newquay and Looe branches, along with Gunnislake, Barnstaple and ideally Okehampton. Perhaps a chance to fill in Exeter-Salisbury as well.

Well I still need Robeston, so we'll call it even! Yes there was a tour to there not too long ago, but I couldn't afford to do it. One day...

You're missing approximately nothing with Milford Haven, the best thing to do there is visit the Tesco next to the station, even better is leaving!

The main ones I can think of I'd like to do are:

  • East London Line (the stretch from Canonbury to New Cross Gate)
  • Chiltern Main Line (north of West Ruislip)
  • The northern branches of the Northern Line
  • North Downs Line
  • Most of the main lines out of London
  • Branches of the GWML (apart from Greenford which I did the other week)

There are a few other link lines I'd be interested in doing such as Minster-Sandwich, Beckenham Junction-New Beckenham and Queens Road Peckham-Surrey Quays (when it opens which might not be 2012 I suppose!) and the Southern parliamentary train on the Wandsworth Road to Kensington (Olympia) route.

If this includes foreign travel, we are planning a two night journey from Chengdu to Urumqui in China. I wanted to go another 2 nights to Kashgar but my Wife will only allow 2 nights. There should be multiple loco changes and we should be able to book a soft sleeper. I wanted to do Newcastle to Chengdu by train, but I was threatned with Divorce! :)

Just seen this post of mine from some time ago, having seen there were new posts on this thread. Seeing the above, it reminded me that I've actually not got that much to do already, indeed trying to plan my ALR days was difficult and I've got something like 6 or 7 days with no plans yet. Planned some Travelodges around certain PSUL moves, although some nights will be sleeper moves just for the sake of mileage.

Looking back at my original post, I've achieved precisely none of the lines I listed.

I have however finally cleared Stockport to Manchester Piccadilly, plus North TPE, and lines into Hull via Selby and Goole. Also finally managed Skegness and Matlock. I'm actually planning a second EM rover for later this week, hoping to clear Oakham - Kettering via Corby, Nuneaton-Coventry-Rugby and Stafford to Stone.

I am intending to do the Cambrian, Marches, Berks and Hants, Exeter - Penzance, some more of Scotland (only done Stranraer - Glasgow - WCML). Also, only need Oxford - Bicester until I have finished the Chilterns but was going to wait for the new curve at Bicester.
I can now say that I have done absolutely none of this! Done other areas, including the HoWL. Hmmm, better get that sorted!

Well, I shall be holidaying in Dorset this year, so I guess a visit on the Weymouth - Bath route will be in order.

Plan for this year line wise.

Blaenau Ffestiniog Branch. Thats on the cards for next week when I return from Ireland.

Then at some point plan to do an all line to do various lines in Anglia and the Southeast ive never done.

I have a trip booked for the end of the week that will include Merthyr Tydfil and Shrewsbury-Chester, my first new track for the year.

Beyond that, I've always wanted to do the West Highland Line, so hopefully I'll finally get round to that.

Make sure you've got a good camera and fine weather for the views across to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct.

Thanks. :)

The trip's already booked so I can't do much about the weather, but I'll certainly bring a camera along.

Just after Chirk, going north. Look left, you'll be able to pick out the blue arches.

Some nice views across the fields to Fflint / Broughton as you approach Chester too. Plus of course the racecourse.

This may seem a bit odd but I plan on doing the whole of London overground in one day in the next coming weekends. Its as slow as a week in jail when ever I ride it but I may aswell do it and try and do a full orbital of london maybe using the tramlink too- though not looked at a map to see if that is possible yet but it must be

I shall be sampling the Polesworth stopper and the Stockport - Stalybridge service this coming Friday morning. Furthermore at the end of the day, I will be taking the last Sheffield - Derby service to clear the line via Toton Centre.

Wouldn't mind doing Ormskirk at some point this year. One of those locations I keep meaning to tick off! Barrow-Sellafield was scooped today after I had to divert to get to Sellafield for the 'Glowex'. My train from Preston to Carlisle was caped so Plan B to go via Barrow was put into practise!

I cant believe it, SWMBO has suggested buying a couple of Thames Valley Rover tickets and pottering about on the local services in the summer

So I may manage trips to Greenford, Marlow, Windsor, Henley etc.

It is amazing what a few episodes of Michael Portillo on trains can do for a woman.
