Which is your favourite and least favourite? :)

My favourites are the 90s and early 2000s. R&B was at it's greatest here with the likes of Shaggy, Kanye West & Eminem. Also, pop music was at it's prime here, and in the 90s, the eurodance genre was at its prime as well.

My least favourite is the late 2000s. It was just full of trash & manufactured garbage. Justin Bieber started out here, and his song 'Baby' takes the sh*t cake (though he's got better since). Also, you guys have to listen to Rebecca Black's 'Friday' on YouTube. I'll provide a link to the video when I have extra time, but it's an absolute ear shredder!!

Ps mods - I think this topic deserves its own thread, as compared to being in the Now Playing thread...

Around the early 2000's with the emergence of progressive and vocal trance; it followed on from 12" singles, and drew the line "if it's under eight minutes it isn't worth starting to listen to".
I also liked the new romantics era which was, what, early/mid 80's?
The great thing about today is with internet radio, spotify, youtube, soundcloud etc etc you don't have to listen to what you don't like. In the 80's commercial radio was brave enough to spread things around; now the tight playlists are so bland I wonder why they bother.

My least favourite would be around 1985 - 89 chart wise with lots of naff overproduced stuff around and it led me into listening to heavy metal and more alternative music as also I was in my teens which is a time of change anyway. There was still good music around as there always has been in every era, but the charts were in my view pretty bad back then.
Oh and Pete Waterman if in the unlikely chance you're reading this you could do with apologising for some of the stuff you were responsible for around then too.

Ooh, difficult to choose really. My childhood was 70s and 80s, so I suppose that would be my era, really. I was also exposed to quite a lot of the stuff my parents used to listen to as well, and as I've got older I appreciate that much more now than I used to.

Early adulthood was from 1990 onwards, and I started getting into trance, techno and other electronic genres in my early 20s. I hated acid house when I first heard it, but it has grown on me over the years. I can't really pin it down to one era.

My least favourite era would probably be now, to be honest.

The early 2000s vocal trance that was coming out of the record label Positiva at the time was absolutely a delight to listen to and still is to this day.

I wish the same could be said for the music coming out of this decade. It's nothing but absolute drivel...

Lost somewhere within Bank-Monument tube station,
My favourite eras would be the mid-1990s with the whole Britpop scene (no thanks to those miserable beggars in The Verve and Radiohead for killing it off <(<(<(), and the early to mid-2000s when guitar bands came back into fashion and some really good British female singers started putting out albums. 1995, 1996 and 2007 would rank as my favourite musical years.

Least favourite would probably be 2009-2011, I can probably count the number of albums I own from these years on the fingers of one hand. Serious doldrums. I blame Thom Yorke and Richard Ashcroft, mostly because I can. :P

2017 is shaping up to be a corker of a year musically.

Hmmm, that's a hard one.

I'd probably go 2005-2015 as that's when I really noticed a modern wave of power metal being released which made me realise metal isn't just who can sound the most unintelligable.

Shout out for 1991-1994 for the classic sonic music

Yes there was some very good music from that era such as Eurodance.

Indeed, that was the time I realised that 'modern' music was no longer any good and was not what I was interested in. Have you seen this Justin Bieber parody by Key of Awesome?
Also, you guys have to listen to Rebecca Black's 'Friday' on YouTube. I'll provide a link to the video when I have extra time, but it's an absolute ear shredder!!
Last I looked, the parody video had more views than the actual video, which says a lot.

Absolutely agree. Any tracks in particular? Great to see fans of that sort of music on here :D

Favourite - 1983 to 1987
If someone had asked me when I was the OP's age, I would never have given music of that era a mention. But I have recently gone on to rediscover music from that era (thanks to the easy availability of streamed music) and I really like a lot of it.
Least favourite - 1992 to 1994 and 2002 onwards
Many of my favourite trains are fro 1992-1994. Who can dislike songs like "What is Love?" by Haddaway or "Mr Vain" by Culture Beat, and countless other classics.

The early 2000s vocal trance that was coming out of the record label Positiva at the time was absolutely a delight to listen to and still is to this day.
Yes early 2000s trance music was brilliant. Any particular classics you remember?:D

True for the most parts, but one of our Year 9s asked me to play the FIFA 17 soundtrack (all produced in 2016). I was sceptical, and thought it would probably be mostly be rubbish, but I found I actually really liked about a dozen tracks. The kids absolutely love them, yet most of the artists are virtually unknown with the mainstream media channels hardly giving them any airtime, while giving plenty of airtime to absolute drivel.

There are some fantastic tracks being produced today if you know where to look. Maybe I should create a 'Modern music that isn't rubbish' thread?!

What it love? Baby don't hurt me. Don't hurt me. No more. :)

I also liked 'Rhythm of the night' and Rhythm is a dancer', though the Eurodance genre started to die a bit by the late late 90s.

I tried, but the link wouldn't work!!!

Does it has as many dislikes?

My favourite music eras are the 1980s and 1990s.

Some recent music is very good, but it doesn't match up to the '80s and '90s, in my view.

My favourite music era is probably the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, which lasted from the very late 1970s to roughly 1984, and produced dozens of superb heavy metal bands and albums, even if some never got even the slightest hint of success. Amazing how the entire movement gained traction, boomed and sadly declined so quickly, and the sheer amount of bands it spawned.

Fifa's soundtracks around a decade ago were superb, but they as good as fell off a cliff a few years ago. The quality has since got better, and like you I actually enjoy a lot of the present offering, even though most of it is well away from my traditional tastes.

Anyone who thinks all new music is rubbish who likes 1980s style music but is prepared to give new variations on it a trance should try listening to CHVRCHES :D (as I am right now ;))

I am in a position where each week I need to play about 3 hours of music that is attractive to youngsters (11-14) so it is important for me to find some modern music that I like. I've embarked on quite a mission to seek such music in the past year or so, and with a surprising amount of success. That said, many of them do like old classics (I can occasionally put on tracks like Eye of the Tiger, We are the Champions and The Final Countdown and they will quite happily listen, and some will even sing along), but they won't tolerate too much music that they consider old fashioned, so my quest to find at least tolerable (and preferably likeable) modern music continues.... ;)

You are probably already familiar with these, but here is a list of tracks from FIFA 17 which I think are pretty good (coming from someone who generally hates most 'modern' music that gets airtime these days)

 • Oliver - Electrify ft. Scott Mellis
 • Bishop Briggs - Be Your Love
 • Bob Moses - Tearing Me Up
 • Capital Cities - Vowels
 • Digitalism - Shangri La
 • ZHU - Money
 • HUNTAR - Anyway
 • Jagwar Ma - O B 1
 • ST feat. Marta Kot - Vera i Nadezhda
 • Skott - Porcelain
 • Two Door Cinema Club - Are We Ready? (Wreck)
 • Paul Kalkbrenner - Let Me Hear You (Scream)
 • Saint Motel - Move
 • Safia - Bye Bye
 • Phantogram - Same Old Blues
 • Rocco Hunt - Sto bene così
 • Bastille - Send Them Off!
 • Paper Route - Chariots
 • Empire Of The Sun - High And Low
 • Kygo - Raging ft. Kodaline
 • Zedd Grey - Adrenaline

Many of these are hardly known about and get no media attention whatsoever, some unknown reason, despite actually being incredibly popular with many youngsters, who most modern music is presumably aimed at.

So people tend to only hear the absolute garbage that prevails and therefore (somewhat understandably) assume that all modern music is utter crap, when actually it isn't!

For me. most music started circa 1963. The guitar bands, the singer/songwriters, then psychedelia, progressive rock, etc. Since then, there has always been similar music available, although frequently ignored by many radio stations that have not progressed beyond the "two short songs followed by an ad break" concept (or on BBC, the "ads" are more likely to be "programme trails or irrelevant chat".).

So - no single period that is my favourite, but quite a few spells when it has been harder to find anything I like.

My instinctive answer to the question of what my favourite musical era is would be the late-1980s but after some thought I can't single one out. All eras have good and bad music, or as I prefer to think, music that is and isn't to my taste.

I've taken no interest in the charts for years nor do I listen to commercial radio. I'm quite happy to believe that records which sell well are for the most part dire but the good stuff is still being made.

Earlier this evening I was listening to Craig Charles' Funk and Soul show on 6 Music and he was playing some fantastic new stuff, along with the old classics.

I think , for me 2013-2017 has been the best era , what with the emergence of DJ's like Avicii , Kygo , Galantis et al

Dont really remember the 2000s era , and wasn't around for the 90s , so for me 2013-17 is the best

I had a 2-disc compilation by Graham Gold that I was fond of, but sadly lost in a house move. I can't for the life of me remember what the title was, but it more or less sums up my taste in music at the time. My younger brother had a few of the Gatecrasher albums, and I loved them too.

I preferred my music to have a slightly harder edge, but I didn't really mind the floaty vocal stuff, as long as it wasn't too cheesy. I do recall one Easter weekend where we covered gay pubs/clubs in Coventry, Birmingham, Cheltenham and Blackpool, and the over-riding "theme tune" was Fragma's Toca's Miracle.

This was my cup of tea:

This video a very provocative subject as music is very much personal taste. However my favourite era has to be anything up to the 90s. After that music went down the pan. Apart from very few exceptions.
Will someone make a musical about any of today's so called singers.

Do they "sing"? Most vids I catch on TV they just shout random words at you!

Favourite would be 1980 - 1981. NWOBHM, New Wave , New Romantics, there were great bands popping up every week.
Least favourite would be the Stock, Aitken and Waterman era with endless dross like Kylie and Jason or Robson & Jerome, Michael Bolton in the charts.

Being slightly older than most on here, I tend to lean towards the mid 1970's to early 80's

The 60s. 1760s that is.

In all fairness, I'll listen to music spanning from the 14th to 21st centuries. It's hard to pick a favourite from that, the variety is so wide and there's plenty of good music to be found at most times in history. It's just a case of sorting out the dross (there's no shortage of that either!).

I can find music I like from almost any era, but I find the early '70s (i.e. before pub rock and punk) sorely lacking.

But I can't narrow it down to a favourite era. There's a lot of excellent modern music outside the mainstream (Future Islands , Rose Elinor Dougall and Warm Digits are my current favourites) and loads more to be discovered.

I've found so much brilliant music on 6. Worth the licence fee on its own (but it costs me a fortune in CDs!).

My claim to fame (by association) is that my wife's first husband (and therefore my stepdaughter's father) was the late Chris Aylmer, bassist of NWOBHM stalwarts Samson.

This is a difficult one. I would say there are few particularly 'good' or 'bad' eras for music in general, but would qualify that by saying there are good and bad eras for specific types of music.

For example, at the moment is a bad time for rock music ('rock is the new jazz' has become a bit of a cliche but I can understand it. It's ossified and is in the process of turning into a specialist genre unless someone saves its mass appeal fast). It's also a bad time for mainstream pop in terms of what I like, but does that make it 'bad'?

I would say for the following genres:
 • Classic Rock: 70s
 • Heavy Metal: 2000-2010
 • Beat: 1965-Early 70s.
 • Prog: Mid 70s
 • Electronic Dance: Early to Mid 90s
 • Classical/Modernist: The interwar period
 • Electronic 'not dance' music: 1970s (I'm thinking Kraftwerk, La Dusseldorf, Synergy, Jarre...)
 • Indie: I'm going to go out on a limb with this one and say 2001-2007
 • A notable exception: That indie with interesting electronics - Stereolab and Broadcast goes right from the 90s to about 2005 for their 'good' material.*

But these are personal and subjective. I agree with SS4 on power metal, but would change the dates ever so slightly.

*I think the term I was looking for is 'post-rock'?
