"Northwich Station" (I think it was) has just materialised beside Weston Rd in Crewe! Took me by surprise. It must be disused, and it was definitely still standing...

Lincoln High Street and East Holmes SBs are still standing after the 2008 Lincoln re-signalling made them redundant.

Tallington on the ECML, closed about 15+ years ago, but used locally recently to control the crossing when the OHLE came down

Litteworth and Sleaford North on the joint line. Grove Rd, Sutton, Bathley Lane on ECML. Castleford Gates and Castleford Station.
Can a box be described as disused if it has been retained for emergency control, of a level crossing for example? I stand to be corrected but Lincoln High Street box serves that purpose.

Equally, Tallington (Helpston), Barnby Road (Claypole), Bathley Lane (Carlton) and Grove Road (Ranskill) can all be used in an emergency to control their respective area - under instruction; though normally operated in remote by the neighbouring boxes (shown in brakcets).

A most interesting example for me is Fiskerton Junction Crossing keeper's box - no, I've not got confused with Fiskerton Station crossing box, but I was genuinely interested to find the little building on the Nottingham side of main box is a crossing box with its own frame to operate the crossing with the main box switched out, sadly now practically derelict so I assume it's been a long time since it was last used. I'd always assumed it was a lamp hut or similar. Apparently it was operated as required for many years by a lady who lived nearby.

A little research indicates it even has it's own name - Morton Crossing Ground Frame.
That would make a nice little shed/summerhouse for a garden. The small frame was taken out of use when a night shift was introduced in the adjacent signal box. I don't have a closure date, but it is certainly over 16 years since the small frame was used.

Postland box, on the former March to Spalding line, is still standing (just) 33+ years after closure of the line... It's in a sorry state though...

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned Hartington on the old Buxton to Ashbourne line.

The 1930s-style Southern box at Richmond was still there this afternoon; I believe it's been disused for quite some time.

I always thought that was still in use, at least until now! :)

Richmond is very much still open :o

Two more to add are Bletchley and Watford PSBs which are both now offices. In fact I visited Bletchley last week for the first time since the early 1990s and it was rather strange sitting at a desk where the panel would have been.

Isn't some of the potential confusion about Richmond to do with the fact that it only controls the Anglia route (NLL) tracks, and the box code is GB with the signals also plated GB (for Gunnersbury)?

Presumably the box originally controlled the through lines as well but the Richmond P1/2 area must now come under Feltham, with the boundary with Wimbledon being quite close on the London side?

I'm amazed that there are so many of these still in existence.

This is especially true as the old Panel Box at the east end of Newport Station didn't seem to last very long after it was closed! I'm pretty sure that they haven't used the land for anything apart from parking, so why it was knocked down so (comparatively) quickly, I don't know.

EbbwJ has just reminded me of another one, Aberthaw East, which can't be pulled down because of where it is.

That is because it is Grade Two listed as far as I am aware. Maybe another member could confirm?

Judging by the hole in the roof it won't be grade anything if it's not plugged and the ivy will probably be ruining the top half of the box. It's in a very sorry state. Just out of curiosity the GF at Llysfaen (between colwyn and Abergele), is that the remains of a box from way back?

On my part of the SR (Hants) there are many former signal boxes of the LSWR brick and concrete style (e.g. Winchester and Southampton Central (both ends). When the area signalling was all remoted to Eastleigh, did these 'boxes' retain all the local interlocking in the lower floors?

If they do, are they still considered disused?

There are disused boxes still standing at
Paisley SC
Tomatin
Carrbridge
Elgin
Nairn
Hurlford (technically just switched out)
Helmsdale
Forsinard
Rogart

As already stated the WHL still has most of its boxes that were shut due to RETB.

What you want is Signalling Atlas and Signal Box Directory published by the Signalling Record Society. The SRS has compiled all such data in heroic detail.

Surprised Platform 5 have not tapped into this market

The frame with levers are still in place inside this box, looking online at recent pictures looks beyond repair, think it will be one of those places that will eventually fall over

All boxes on the Ely to Norwich line are still standing out of use, I am surprised that they have not been demolished by now especially those that are at the disused/closed stations on the route like Shippea Hill, Lakenheath, Harling Road and Eccles Road

The bottom of the box is brick-built, which is why, I suspect, it has remained standing.

When I was there, the box at Chathill didn't look to have much life and the level crossing is covered by CCTV so I guess it remotely monitored)

Glaisdale too (unless it still has something to do with the token equipment for the line?)
