Hi, I recently accepted a job offer as a signaller at TVSC. I have to go to York for signaller school, I was hoping some of you lovely people could impart on me some of your knowledge and experience in what to expect. I am interested in anything from the hotel to what to expect during and after the course....thank you.

I'm on a TCB course, I've had three trainers and they've all been great. The first two weeks were quite slow and weeks three and four were definitely a shock and more difficult.

I was lucky to stay in the Principle York for three weeks, have a few weeks in a different hotel and then will be going to the university halls of residence which I've heard bad things about but they seem to be NR's preferred choice!

You'll be fine! It's actually good fun if you're lucky to get a nice group.

First hotel was attached onto the train station so about 5 minute walk. Second one we has was about 25/30 minute walk and I've heard that it's easier to get a bus to/from the uni. You can claim back expenses for taxis etc if you do get put somewhere a bit further out.

Do they send out any joining packs before your start date in regards to signaller school, hotel, travel etc?.

From the last I heard, I'm also 'pencilled' in for the course in York starting on the 23rd... Anyone had joining instructions for this yet?

Also, I've been informed by my LOM that I will be given train tickets to get me there/home, anyone know of any dramas taking a car? And could I claim for fuel? it's a 2.5 hour drive compared to a 5.5 hour train journey

You should contact your LOM, mine gave me a folder before I started, it had hotel details and lots of info about my box. My LOM emails my train tickets to me each week but some people are given a big bundle for the whole course.

The company prefers to issue train tickets. It may be possible to claim back fuel but it seems to vary from area to area. My area wouldn't pay for fuel as train tickets were issued for us. But it would make sense if it's quicker and easier for you! In my case the train ticket was £114 per week when I could have driven for
£50 of fuel!

Is a rail ticket given an 'anytime' one? i.e can you travel early Monday morning rather than late Sunday when the trains are slower?

Anybody starting in York on the 23rd been told their accommodation yet?
I'm hoping for a hotel rather than the student accommodation.

That depends on how far you have to travel. If it's deemed that you have to travel a distance by which you wouldn't be at the school and ready to go at 9am on monday, they will sort out accomodation for sunday night and you will be given a sunday ticket.

I start 16th of this month, and that's all I know. Don't even know what I should wear for the first day. Then I presume off to signaller school 23rd.

I think it's a suit and tie job until we are issued with our uniform is the best bet.

For the first day of the week before Signalling School?
I would suggest casual but smart. You'd look very out of place in a Box or SCC in a suit and tie!

Not sure that there is a uniform - didn't appear to be at TVSC anyway. Smart casual is probably the best bet.

Uniform is optional and we were given the choice of:
collared shirt
tie
polo shirt
trousers
fleece jacket
gilet

We even got offered thermal undies and a belt.

Is that option available at all boxes?

There are loads of different uniform items that can be ordered, much more than there ever were in the past and there are casual and smart options; it's up to your LOM what he or she offers you. Sizes are on the generous side and I'd go for t shirts over the polo shirts if you're given the option. Uniform is entirely optional, in my neck of the woods at least, but our LOM likes us to wear it if we order it. I'd say 90% of my colleagues don't bother with the uniform at all and just wear jeans and a t shirt (me included).

Definitely don't wear a suit and tie to the school.

Good, I hate collar and tie !

I'd prefer a t shirt and combats if offered, when I went up TVSC they seemed to wear a uniform - polo and trousers in the main, a few shirt and ties to.

Some areas are more strict about it than others. Big signalling centres where they get more external visitors on the operating floor are more likely to have a uniform only policy or a dress code. Whereas everywhere else we all slob around looking like tramps.

Did anyone see the signalman at Stockport on the tv program who didn't wear boots or socks

No, but I work barefoot. First thing I do when I arrive is take my shoes and socks off. Most of my colleagues wear slippers on shift.
