Had a squint through Rail Magazine yesterday night.

Testing is expected to begin in July, with the 73969 heading over to Velim.

Nothing about the Mk5s...as per usual.

Hunted down these unreleased images of Humza Yousaf's visit to visit Mk5 mock-ups at Broxburn, which shows both seating concepts, berths, en-suite facilities, lounge car seats, corridors and visualisations of the interior...

I see a 76 is back on the Inverness sleeper. By itself too. Why is that?

A friend of mine who works for Serco, who has visited the factory in Spain, has told me that there are a couple of coaches that have already been assembled bodyshell wise. Due to their tight-lipped policy, they weren't able to include the photos of the stock.

So we can pretty much conclude that the lack of released material regarding the Mk5s for CS is down to Serco, and not based entirely on the progress of the stock itself. Just a shame really, but it's pretty evident that they are keeping tabs on the progress for a big release coverage on them (that's my only guess).

Any word on if the timetable for testing in Velim remains on time?

Mk5s were due to be delivered there this month, as was a Class 73 for testing. But with just over a week to go this month, no further details have emerged.

I take there isn't any news then?!:eek::shock:

Nope. Nothing at all.

Apologies to anyone who saw this thread light up in bold and immediately got excited :)

Hopefully everything is horribly delayed and we get to enjoy the old stock for the whole of 2018 too.

i suppose given that these are just locomotive hauled unpowered carriages (LHCS) the testing won't take that long, i.e. no propulsion system(s) to test as such, less safety systems (no TPWS Etc.) and as the propulsion system (for traction) is pretty much an already known constant, racking up fault free miles should be easier than if it was a powered multiple unit. ) hence it won't be that long between the start of testing and revenue earning service.

AFAIK, 73969 is the one expected to be sent, but perhaps repairs at L'boro are taking longer than expected...

Yes, this was the one down to be sent, but AFAIK has not left Loughborough yet having been there c.7 months now. 73971 has emerged with the new coupling, but returned north to Scotland to resume 'normal' duties - not sure if this makes it more or less likely 969 is still the test loco!?

To some extent, however there are a couple of extra challenges to test with the new sleeper stock, namely:

- they have Dellner couplings, so the 73/9s (and 92s) are having these retro-fitted; and
- they have 1,500v (vs 800v) ETS and a high ETS load to boot.

Both these aspects will need rigorous testing and provide opportunities for spanners to be thrown into the works over and above comparable testing for "normal" new LHCS.

Would the class 73 be sent through the Channel Tunnel and continue through Europe by rail or carried on a low loader to Velim.

New guy here, so keep me on track if I go astray :)

I took a long look around the Velim depot and sheds today (from outside the fence) and could see no sign of a Class 73 or sleeper coaches.

I live about 15 miles from the depot and take a wander up there by train or bike occasionally. It would be great to get a heads-up if anyone knows when the Class 73 or coaches will arrive there.

Welcome Tam, fae the Czech Republic :)

You had me excited for a minute when I saw this thread highlighted in bold. Still no news on when the 73s or the Mk5s will arrive in Velim, despite the date for testing being last month.

Just have to wait and see, unless someone knows otherwise.

Hi Tam and welcome

Of the 6 Sleeper 73/9s, three are in Loughborough (Wabtec/Brush) and 3 working in Scotland, so unfortunately none near Velim currently.

On a positive note 2 of them have now had the Dellner couplings fitted to work with the Mk5s and I'm assuming the three in the works currently will have them fitted too before they're released.

No doubt any news of 73s heading your way will appear on here, so keep you eyes peeled :)

IIRC, the 73 involved in the incident at Craigentinny a few months ago (can't mind the number) was the one due to head over to the Czech Republic. I've not been keeping tabs on its progress in other threads but I imagine that its repair would've had a knock on effect on testing in Velim?
