An own goal in the 6th minute of time added on... if it isn't your year this time, it never will be!
We managed to come from behind to win in the league for the first time since April 2017 (which coincidentally was also the last home league game I missed) against Blackburn. A game we could easily have lost after going behind in the first 10 minutes, but other than a dodgy start to each half we played pretty well, and the two culprits of our missed chances on boxing day both buried that hoodoo by bagging today. I've come to the conclusion that "homer" refs are a bit like gods: loads of folk claim they exist but I've yet to see any evidence of it!
On VAR, it would probably have helped the clown in the middle today, but it is only ever going to be as good as the people watching the video make it. It won't solve contentious decisions entirely and if you assume it will you're bound to be disappointed.
I still think a system a bit like how "Hawkeye" in tennis works, where each team has say two "appeals" per half, which are lost if the VAR affirms the original decision, would be one way of implementing it as fairly as can be. The issues are with how it is implemented rather than the system itself.
