The problem is that some of the questions are un-answerable for some people. How can you give an example of a time when you gave excellent customer service when you've never been in a customer service role? Or give an example of when you've been in an emergency situation. What's an emergency situation? I've been in buildings when the fire alarms have gone off, but it's been a false alarm. Does that count? I've read on her of guys that think they have to give answers that are relevant to the job, even if they've never worked on the railways, so they've got no chance

Good luck to all those completing their interviews and also those who are awaiting contact. Having completed my interview all I will say is, don’t panic!
I approached the interview with more worry than any in-person/video call interview I have completed previously. The foundations of this fear being that I wasn’t speaking to another person. I regret worrying so much as I feel it has impacted my responses. If I had approached the interview with as much confidence as I would have going into a face-to-face interview I think my responses would have been of a much higher quality.
tl;dr: don’t worry, it’s a peculiar concept talking to yourself but think of it as a normal interview and you will be fine!

Your fire alarm example is an emergency situation regardless of the outcome. You could talk about how you reacted, how you directed others, perceived dangers etc etc. Today it was a false alarm, tomorrow it may not be.
If you think hard enough you can turn a situation into a customer based one even if you aren’t in a customer-facing role. A customer doesn't have to be a member of the general public. If you’re a North Sea driver for example, the company you work for eventually has a customer somewhere down the line. Describe a time you went above and beyond to the benefit of the company and the impact it had on the customer.

Very true. It's reasonable to presume that the HR people know this. They know its going to be difficult for people to come up with a well chosen, well structured answer with only 30 seconds notice. So maybe it's more about showing how well you think on your feet when you're in a situation where you need to react quickly. In that case, rehearsing and practising your answers will be a bad idea, because they'll see straight through it. Only people with exceptionally sharp minds will get through......which, presumably, is the whole point. And also, presumably, explains why I didn't!

The practice video interview allows re-recording if not happy with an answer for a particular question when playing it back. I’m assuming this is the same for the real thing? Or is it one shot only? Or going the other way, is more than two attempts per question allowed? Obviously I hope to be happy with my first attempt.

It would be wrong for any candidate to share the questions asked. Plus there is no guarantee each candidate receives the same questions.
Surely though the point of the video interview is to get the almost instant answer, not a pre prepared one, and definitely not one that was given from someone else via the internet. That was the point I was making. This is different to the MMI where you can do some solid prep before you get a good grilling.. And clearly I was right about the toc monitoring!
Have you not seen that the toc is monitoring this? Is your friend not able to use the forum? And everyone is likely to panic, it’s an interview with a lot riding on it. The person in question needs to set some quiet time aside, have a thorough read of the job description and then take the test/interview, if they have what the toc wants then they will proceed, but not everyone will of course.
I did my video interview yesterday and can safely say that I completely fluffed it. I've always been quite good at interviews and public speaking so was confident that side of things would not be a problem and spent all my time researching and practicing answers to potential questions rather than practicing being interviewed in this format. BIG MISTAKE! As soon as it started my brain froze and I totally blew it. If anyone is still to do theirs then my advise is practice, practice, practice. This format of interview is weird and I didn't take that into account. Good luck to all.

Same here too! Normally quite good at those sort of questions but went into meltdown straight away!
Was fine on the practice ones but the real thing was a disaster. It is what it is i suppose, nothing I can do now other than try again next time, they wont be the last drivers jobs to be advertised

Can I ask if the format was the same as I did with LNER? 6 questions, 30 seconds to read and understand the question, 5 minutes to answer, 2 attempts at each answer?

Did EMR let you know you’d passed to their required level? I have passed my OPC assessments, but not sure if it’s to enhanced level or not - and they invited me to the stage 1 in a few weeks.
Have emailed Irene, just wondering if you know anything more

What does stage one consist of guys? When I passed my ones for Northern I did all the tests and MMI in the same day

Might be waiting to see how many of the ones who've made it this far actually pass. 100 people could be assessed and nobody passes. That way then they've got people ready to go if needs be. It could also be due to there being over 10 vacancies (can only have about 8/10 drivers per course as far as I know) so you could be in the second batch of those to be assessed
