If it has been dropped form any sort of hight it is going to be well and truly fushed! Someones no claim bonus has just took an all mighty bash! God this will be expensive - guess the lawyers will make a bundle also.

PS can they not just drag it out the hold and do some panel beating and straighten it out - no one will be able to tell anyway ( getting coat :roll::roll:)

Warning: Bad joke ahead!

If it had dropped from any higher and had punched through the bottom of the ship, sticking half way through the hole it created, it would be literally living up to being called a "Plug"......

If its going back to the manufacturer its likely for component recovery for installation on new mainframes.

This thread, and also swathes of emails on gen groups semi astound me. How so much can be written on subjects at a time when nobody has definitive knowledge, or access to it is amazing. Before long it snowballs and people are discussing parts of the original guesswork as if it's fact.

I have no actual clue as to which loco had what happen to it. I do know we may not ever hear the full picture either, as we have no right to at the end of the day. I'll wait and see if anything official comes out about this to be honest.

I found this
http://www.meaker.me.uk/Rail/Class/70-2/B03.htm
But it is from the 4th January.

If that it is indeed 12 (which we are nearly 100% sure it is) it definatly is bent, judging by the height of the front of the loco and body shape...

Rumours floating that she's going to Leeds Midland Road for assessment...

BUT she is definatly not on the ship going back to Erie, she is on a low loader as the last picture shows...

Agreed.

It only takes one snippet of information to get everyone hysterical

Isn't this one of the basic functions of forums such as this? Yes, there is lots of idle speculation, some informed, some not so, but isn't that what makes it interesting? Comments about 'waiting for official reports or announcements' are all well and good, but one of the whole points of forums is provide an arena to discuss and wibble on about our hobby. Long may it continue and thanks to those with access/contacts/technical knowledge, we can all learn a little bit more about the railway as whole.

Wibble & speculate away I say!

To offer an appropriate misquote: “Speculation may, or may not be, the spice of life” ;)

Though I try to keep out of some of the most speculative aspects of this forum and prefer to wait for the facts, it is nonetheless entertaining to read as various ideas unfold in the interim :D

To potentially shed some light on the speculation, wnxx.com has further information on its' latest news page:

Unloaded from the Beluga Endurance to the quayside at Newport Docks over the weekend a structurally impaired 70012 (DHLT) has been deposited on a trailer. This trailer is to enable movement within the Docks, it is not of a type that has to be used to move a locomotive of this tonnage over the UK road network.

Well, if the photo hasn't been photoshopped, the loco looks bent. Suggests whoever the insurer is may want to decide what to do next before paying to send it back or ship was full / not going to US).

It's currently in the English Channel heading northeast, so it won't be heading back to the US yet.

I have just been advised the ship is on the way to Ghent and will return to Newport after that to collect 70 012 ( so I guess it's still on the low loader at Newport as a parking place for it! ) which it will then return to the USA for repair.

Speculation is fine as long as people make it clear when they are guessing - too many times we get things presented as fact which clearly aren't.

Ouch, looks pretty bent to me.

I notice the trailer says "Allelys" on it. I seem to remember seeing that wriiten on trailers used to move locos around the country. Could it be the haulage contractor (OK maybe merely the manufacturer of the trailer). Suggests to me this is going by road to elsewhere in the UK and is not a trailer for internal use within the docks.

I notice from the picture that, apart from the horizontal frame, there appear to be no other body ripples. I am comparing this to the damage to a written off car. I cannot discern a broken window either. Obviously it cannot be as simple as that but it looks to me like the locomotive must be a set of modules bolted to an underframe. I think this is true anyway but someone else will know if this is the case. I think, if these locos are of a modular construction, that maybe only the frame is damaged. Then possibly it is repairable/re-buildable in the UK.

A question that has occured to me before given the class 70s weight vs delivery challenges. Why are these locomotives not being kit built in the UK. The UK is not a third world country (I will duck now) so why is it other countries, with less engineering capability, around the world get to build their own trains from components delivered in kit form ?.

Like other's I can only speculate - but in my professional capacity, and looking at the photographs so far, that bent main frame would be beyond practical repair. I would expect that the lcomotive would be stripped, the components all assessed and tested. If in any doubt about their soundness they would be scrapped and replaced with new. The bent main frame (bed-plate) would certainly have to be scrapped - no one could certify any repair on damage of that extent. I'd expect a lot of the components are recoverable, though.

A big problem after such an incident is getting Network Rail safety certification to run the locomotive after repairs are done, as it's not easy to assess what unseen damage (stresses) have been put into the structure that could cause premature or even catastrophic failure in the future. It's a brave engineer who'd put his name to such a certificate!!

It's a similar situation with the Grayrigg Pendolino - many of the vehicles suffered only minor deraliment damage and rapid deceleration stresses. But it was deemed easier to claim the insurance and build a new train than return these to service.....

1. Any locomotive builder prefers to build in his own factory, in order to retain control over quality issues. Unless there are big financial benefits in "localisation" - UK ain't renowned for "cheap labour"!!

2. The countries that do assemble their own locomotives from foriegn supplier kits do so either because of:

a. the point above about financial savings.
b. government import restrictions and insistence on high local content of value (e.g. Bombardier electrostars assembled in South Africa for Gautrain)
c. as part of a technology transfer deal (e.g. Alstom, Bombardier and Siemens in China)

Years ago we made locomotives for countries all around the world - that was mainly because we ruled those countries as colonies, or the other countries then were not industrialised.... Sadly, no longer the case :(

One word for that I think, SCRAP. I wouldn't trust anything on the undercarrage or anywhere on it until it's been x-rayed and checked for fractures esp the bogies. That has well and truly had it, may as well drop it of at Booth's or EMR.
