Saw something very interesting on Facebook this morning, (link below) of a 67 in a new TFW livery. 67020. Looks very smart but I shall reserve full opinion until sighted in real life!

Is this a joke? I've never seen such a mess of a locomotive in my life! Thanks for linking it.

As I said, I retain full judgement until I lay my eyes on it in real life. On first impressions I like it, but I think it may look slightly worse due to the artificial light being cast on and it being dark.

That appears to just have black slapped on where the grey had been, seems to have almost no concern for how that would work with the red!

At first it shocked me, but looking at it again, I think it looks smart and blends well with red. The plan originally was for the GC Mk4 sets to have the orange stripe removed and red stripe applied. It beats another pro-dominantly white or light grey livery which seems to be common on train fleets now.

I actually really like it. I seem to be in the minority there, but I can see a whole train of this looking very smart. It fits quite well with TfW's overall branding as well, I'm looking forward to these.

That 67 just doesn't look right in that new black livery. If it wasn't for the red, which looks very out of place, then it would have been much better. I want to see it with my own eyes before a final judgement, but I can't say I like it yet.

Now if it was orange in place of the red, I'd be loving it

Ooooh I'm not liking that at all.

However... that actually looks like it might just be okay.

At least until the first sunny day, that is :|

That's a fair point, come to think of it. That shade of red is just a bit too close to the black to properly stand out.

All up though, if I were to be working with red and black as livery colours I'd choose to end up with something a lot more like this:

(A DSB IR4 [Litra ER] unit in the new red and black livery of red bodysides, dark grey underframe skirtings, light grey passenger doors, and a black window band. Via Wikimedia Commons.)

I agree that's much better, but let's remember the reason the Mark 4s are getting red and black at all is due to Grand Central. Considering it isn't even an original livery I think it's pretty good.

Whatever the merits of the new colour scheme, I can see a case for having the MkIV sets in a noticeably different livery to the rest of the fleet: it may help reinforce the message that there's something different about the provision on board (i.e. First Class and buffet counter).

I actually think that TfW introducing a somewhat more 'premium' offering (buffet and first class) is a step in the right direction and should be encouraged. I've travelled on these trains between Shrewsbury and Wrexham and they are far far superior to a 158 or on occasion, a 150!

For me, the ride quality is better, less noise, comfortable and an overall more enjoyable experience - and I've used the buffet!

If they can deliver it consistently, and not regularly swap in a 158 or whatever, then yes by all means they should do it. I'd use it quite happily, more often than not when I'm planning to do such a thing then there's been a swap for a DMU. Makes it easier to decide which way to go out of Hereford on those days!

Is there actually First Class provision on the MK4 sets, other than the 0533 from Holyhead and 1716 from Cardiff?

1st Class is available on all of the current Cardiff - Holyhead services. When the Manchester services are introduced in December however it is likely to be declassified on those services initially.

Yes, all MK4s have first class and catering (staff dependent) onboard.

Thank you both, I thought there was but I was having doubts. I may be using that 06xx from Cardiff next month, if it turns out with a 67 on the day. I'll see what happens on the day!

The physical product is always there but other than the services mentioned First Class is declassified. At least that's what I've found.
It certainly isn't declassified on any of the trains that run presently unless full and standing.

I’ve found that it is generally shown as declassified on Saturday workings. Is this just because they’re standing in for a 175 or whatever? In which case am I mistaken?

The Mark 4 sets aren’t scheduled to operate at weekends, only Monday to Friday.

I can't be the only one who's looking forward to some weekend MK4 workings. Whether or not I do that MK4 ride north of Hereford on 31st October, well there's a big trip report starting that day. All will be revealed soon ;)
