508s have a fantastic ride, 390s and 458s are really good as well.

It can depend on the track; Pacers tend to ride on some pretty poor rails, so the ride quality isn't improved.

I'm not saying a 142 on HS1 would feel brilliant, but it'd feel better than some of the track they run on

Been on an unrefurbished 142070 Northern (former Great Western) today. A lot more cramped than the usual. It felt more like a tram than a train, I guess it's nostalgic!

Give me a modern tram anyday! The 142s you mention are ex-First North Western and they were given a light refurbishment - although they retain bus seats. They are the most common 142s in the North Western region, along with the Mersey ones.<( Some are on loan to FGW currently, they have had new seat covers put in.

What is the "usual" up in the North East? Is it the ex-Arriva Trains Northern ones with the green seats?

Yeah Heaton has been fortunate in keeping much the same allocation its' had for a good few years, in the same way as Newton Heath kept the old North West side 142s, so the regular fare is indeed the Northern Spirit 2+2 individual seating. Quality stuff, and Northern seem to be doing a better job of keeping it in a half decent state than NS and ATN did before them! Of course, there's always the odd interloper from "the other side" to bring down the standard...

They've been sneaking onto the East Lancs line quite a lot recently. We usually have the ones with the 3+2 bench seats...

Deserters! <( Moonlighting with that scruffy lot 'cross the west side of the Pennines, how dare those nice ex-NS units worm their way over there

I've noticed that too on the South Fylde Line! I do a mental cheer, the seats are so comfortable, well compared to the others they are...

However, I've noticed an increase in the dreaded Mersey Pacers on the line. Whenever I go on a reasonably long pacer journey, the Mersey Pacer awaits me and they follow me around! <(<(

Have any of the Mersey Pacers managed to reach Heaton yet? <D I hope they have!

I have noted that also.

The set that formed the 0740 Cherry Tree-Preston ( from there it is the 0802 to Blackpool South) was, wait for it, a 156! First one I've seen on there all year!

There was a 156 on the route this Saturday too - the 11.19 off Accrington! First one I have seen on Monday - Saturday in a very long time.

However, I have previously seen 156s on Sunday workings - albeit just on the Blackpool South - Preston runs.

I hope this is a sign of things to come! Not seen many 150s recently though.

On Saturday, the 1854 Preston-York was 2 x 153s!

I saw that too, earlier in the morning. Isn't that called a 155?

I saw a 2-car 158+153 combo on a York run a few weeks ago, I thought that was quite unusual, but a clever way of keeping 3-cars on the service! It seemed to run 5 minutes late constantly, I wondered if there was an issue of the 153s limited speed (75mph), but then there can't be many places (any?) on Blackpool North - York where a unit can reach 90mph.

Right Thats it! I've found the worst rolling stock in the uk!!!!
The Metro-cammell 465/2/9 & 466s

In 1 week 3 trains have broken down on the medway valley line causing 14 Cancellations and Numerous delays. and on the wider scale at least 1 or 2 465/466 Networkers (Known as NOTWORKERS to many) Built by Metro-Cammell Fail And Southeastern Wont do anything about it. note the BREL/ABB 465's are built to a better standard :)

The only time I have ever seen someone use an alternative font on here. I too hate Comic Sans MS, Calibri is much better :D

Networkers aren't bad, at least they move smoothly - unlike 390s

I'm sure everybody up North would swap the 466s for 142s if they had the electrification to run them.

So much so that they've had their BREL/Brush traction systems replaced with Hitachi kit?
