Slight changes you would make to liveries to make them nicer

The orange top line is only required when running under overhead wires.

I know the Class 444 and 450s do not have that (and wouldn't be able to run under overhead electrification anyway), and is most definitely not needed for the Island Line Class 483s.

And by the way, South Western Railway tookover South West Trains last August.

The blue, white and red liveries are still SWT liveries. SWR has this blue and grey colour scheme that we may or may not see applied to the rest at some point. Speaking of which, that needs a top line too.

And we could totally see them running under overhead electrification at Southampton in the not too distant future.

It doesn’t need it for safety reasons though, as already mentioned. The stock will be scrapped before wires reach Southampton...

Sadly true. But I like the top line, and since the topic of the thread is "changes you (or rather I) would make", actual reasons beyond that are not necessary.

How about this?

How did you do that 185 with a blue front end so well? I use GIMP and I have no idea how to change a massive area of colour like the yellow front without GIMP shading in parts of the headlamps as well. How do you 'cut out' things like headlights or fuel points within a massive area of one colour?

And do you work in layers on your software?

How did you do this so realistically? A colour effect in Photoshop rather than shading?
You select the area and then add a filter to change the colour.
Probably better to use Photoshop - you can get a trial or pay a monthly fee.
There are lots of tutorials on Photoshop masking and selecting.
If you have any questions feel free to PM me.

Add a splash of colour or something to the sides of the white TL 700 livery! The white is starting to look REALLY grubby.
Increase the height of the low grey 'band' to hide brake dust/dirt etc better.

Bring in a black window band i.e. on the GTR livered 317s

Give the GN 387s blue doors to match the incoming 717s and the current 365s.

It's a little bright, and I'd ditch the hazard (or worse, those stupid "teeth") tape on the door surfaces but otherwise perfectly serviceable.

This is the first livery edit that I have done (and first time using GIMP as well).
I think next time I would make the red a little less intense, try to use the proper logo, and make the doors nicer, without the hazard teeth.
I might also give an area or route name in grey, like some Regio-DB trains do.

Can someone do some edits to the Class 395 to see what it would be like with a black, dark blue or any other coloured-front? I think it could look quite good.

EDIT
So I did it myself quickly in Paint 3D. Feel free to have another go with better software.
I did a couple of variations: black, dark blue (body colour), light blue (door colour) and (for fun) white. I also attached the normal yellow front for comparison. NOTE: These were done very unprofessionally, so don't ask for amazing work.

WHITE

Personally I think the Javelin looks good in all of them (bar white).

I'm not really a fan of yellow fronts but it's the best one.
The bright difference in colours gives a good contract compared with the dark blue.

Black's my favourite.

plain dark blue is likely the way they would do the 395 in Japan. That or black. The closest other A-train units in design are all-over white, with a thin coloured surround at the windscreen

With my newfangled knowledge of Paint 3D, I decided to see what other trains would look like with non-yellow fronts. I chose the Class 375 because, unlike the Desiro, no Electrostars have ever had a non-yellow front (unless you count the WMR Turbostars). What would it look like? I decided to find out. I painted a 375 with a black, blue and light blue front.

Sorry about the choppiness of the edits - there's so much stuff on the front Paint 3D had a fit and I ended up with... this.

The "light" blue in the bottom one needs to be quite a bit lighter to match the doors.

I like the idea of using something other than yellow, black, and the body colour for the front of the train. However, I'd put a black window 'illusion' on the gangway door, like this...
