Lovely photo. Farewell, faithful doggies. I am both relieved and slightly sad at the same time.

Waiting to leave the platform. I took some video of the departure but its to big to load apparently. Not sure what to do about that

Just seen this 4 car set on the move between Reddish South and Heaton Norris Junction, no chance of confirming the unit numbers mentioned as it was moving at a fair old speed unfortunately.

These units look close to being in immaculate external condition, infact much cleaner than what some of Northerns workstained 150s currently are.

They look pretty tatty and faded up close. You can clearly see where the old Serco 'Northern' branding was.

Were the 153s unbranded before being removed from service, or has that recently been removed?

And didn’t some of them have Travel South Yorkshire branding on them too?

I'm fairly sure the Northern 153s have been unbranded since Arriva took over in 2016.

Most of my memories of 153s doing what they were designed for were on the previously no set frequency Preston to Ormskirk shuttles in the late 90s and early 2000s as I sometimes went to Liverpool that way if it avoided a wait or was quicker. Plenty of other experienced elsewhere too such as an odd time tagged onto 158s on lines such as the Marches and on Shrewsbury to Crewe stopping runs (the last Central Wales service northbound off the Euston to Shrewsbury when Virgin loco hauled it again for a time), Cumbrian Coast services (mostly south of Barrow) and Blaenau Ffestiniog to think of other routes.

I always found that they were not much more nippy than some of the first generation DMUs (certainly how it felt) and needed to be paired up with other dmu classes to perform better. That horrible stale smell also made it hard to like travelling in them although my dislike of 150s would mean I'd still pick one if they were in such a formation as I preferred the original configurations to certain other units. If the railway does get busy and overcrowded again by the spring or summer it wouldn't be so silly to look at them as an interim option. They probably only have a moderate bit of life left but are better than overcrowded trains when used to strengthen stuff. GMPTE and the like would have killed to have all of these things going spare now a few years ago to bolster sets off Manchester in the Peak times.

There's always a few 153's running around Chester depot, I know that 153369 batteries are knackered if it shuts down it needs fitters attention to get it going again !

Are 153968 and 153972 getting the full PRMs with the big toilet and will they be returning as 368 and 372?

May have remembered wrong but I believe I saw that the first 2 (972 and 968) will get the lite mods and the final 2 (918 and 982) will get the whole package and presumably come back as 318 and 382.

Interesting, I thought TFW needed 9 to keep or is it 7 working ones, 303, 312, 327, 353, 362 and then 318 & 382, I remember they did own 302 and 374

Correct, the named 7 will be fully PRM compliant, along with 153968 and 153972 being retained. All of these are now owned by TfW.

According to the RTT website, both of my final 153s for haulage are coupled together today (320+935), however not where I would have preferred them to be i.e. around the Crewe area.

They were on the Fishguard Harbour workings today (28/12/21) and I cannot find any trace of their movements after the 19:05 Fishguard - Carmarthen (see https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:C24964/2021-12-28/detailed). Initially, I thought they would return to Cardiff on the 2012, but that is a 175.

Will these be overnighting in Carmarthen, as I cannot find any further workings (assuming there has been no swaps mid diagram)?

Correct, they're overnighting in Carmarthen. Going to Cardiff in the morning and on to Canton, then in the afternoon they're back out with a trip to Swansea and then on to Fishguard.
