Could the Hope Valley be better utilised, following the completion of the upgrade scheme?

It's clear removing rationalisation through Dore was sensible, as is adding some extra capabilities for increasing frequencies in the future. More freight is also of key importance to remove trucks from the busy and tight roads through the peaks! Of course, the stations continue to be a major...

    XC Voyager Refurbishment

Legroom is a big issue for us taller folks - makes it very difficult to get comfortable and often forces you to spread your knees to do so - impacting the comfort of your neighbours... I also don't think you need a thicker back to make the seat more comfortable if you choose the right...

Fuel Duty Freeze - Is Raising Fuel Duty Now Too Politically Costly?

Fuel is the cheapest it has been relative to incomes for decades. Conquer Driving did a great video on this for those interested: It seems like Fuel Duty rises have become politically difficult. Reeves did say, this is somewhat due to the uncertainty around where prices will shift due to...

Sheffield Supertram & Tram Train news

Supertram has pretty decent average speeds (outside of the city centre) for a tram with the amount of street running it does. Nottingham's system is much slower outside of some select areas. Metro link is pretty poor on it's on street sections (lots of tight curves)

TPE Transpennine claiming car users transferring as car costs rising

Cars seem to be getting more expensive to repair, as manufacturers start sealing once fixable components into larger 'modules', which have to be replaced as one. Take for example headlights. A 2000s car like mine has a very simple light assembly, which you can unplug and remove to easily swap a...

TPE Transpennine claiming car users transferring as car costs rising

I'll be excited to see it! Awaiting the tender to double the fleet of 802s with baited breath. Fixed costs are so important to take into account. Because many of us have to drive for our jobs, the marginal wear & tear for doing the odd long distance journey is minimal. If a lot of it is...

Capacity Constraints Causing Higher Ticket Prices on EMR London Routes?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is where significant differences lie between the railways and airlines. Railways I believe roughly project demand ahead of time and then have a number of advance fares they will sell for each service, steadily going up in price each time each available "pot"...

UK rail minister got engineer sacked for raising safety concerns

Yeah, completely agree on Hendy's standing. To be honest, I think that he's probably been gunning for Gareth for a while. I'm surprised he reached directly for the 'nuclear' option of threatening to withhold contracts unless he was fired right away. (Perhaps this hasn't been the first time...

UK rail minister got engineer sacked for raising safety concerns

I'm sorry if someone else has already mentioned it, but he's said on his discord group that he had a stipulation in his contract around media appearances and that essentially, Systra was comfortable with him talking about the good, bad and ugly of the industry in a public forum. This is almost...

Capacity Constraints Causing Higher Ticket Prices on EMR London Routes?

Of course this is a very different world to the BR one. The main constraint to passenger numbers on the key intercity routes is capacity, rather than competition from other modes. Past introductions of new fleets (HST, IC225) would have brought a step change in the passenger experience...

Capacity Constraints Causing Higher Ticket Prices on EMR London Routes?

Oh that's a good idea. Might try that in the future - I'm not set on my non EMR London routings yet... I feel your pain there - a lot of the time you're squeezing onto a 5 car to Nottingham too...

Capacity Constraints Causing Higher Ticket Prices on EMR London Routes?

Yeah anything in and out of Euston is a bit of a disaster imo. WCML bailed me out during a big storm we had a few months ago, stopped me becoming stranded in London, but other than that I steer clear. From Nottingham I'm most tempted by Thameslink, although I've only tried the ECML offering...

Capacity Constraints Causing Higher Ticket Prices on EMR London Routes?

Yeah, this is definitely running against the flows that typically go in and out of London. It does suggest the ticket prices are very sensitive to capacity though, in how dramatically they swing. Funnily enough, when I was using the trains on business, I was surprised how cheap they were...

Capacity Constraints Causing Higher Ticket Prices on EMR London Routes?

I've wondered similar. I live in Nottingham and hardly use EMR to get south of Leicester. It's not journey times that is the issue, rather cost, overcrowding and to an extent reliability (although ECML and WCML are hardly better). Obviously there were many debates about the sufficiency of...

Class 810 for East Midlands Railway Construction/Introduction Updates

Hey everyone, I've started a new thread on constrained capacity causing price rises (due to 810 delays, engineering, etc) https://www.railforums.co.uk/threads/capacity-constraints-causing-higher-ticket-prices-on-emr-london-routes.272282/ I'd be interested to hear everyone's thoughts there!

Capacity Constraints Causing Higher Ticket Prices on EMR London Routes?

Hi, I thought I'd start a dedicated thread, asking if constrained capacity due to engineering, the delays on class 810 introduction and general lack of rail capacity across the network is resulting in higher prices on EMR London to Nottingham/Sheffield routes. Additionally, what impacts this...

Class 810 for East Midlands Railway Construction/Introduction Updates

I'm guessing this is why advance tickets seem a lot less forthcoming than they used to be, especially on weekends... Hopefully there will be at least marginal improvement on this front once 810s are in, so I don't need to drive most of the way down the M1 for a cheap trip into London. 100% agreed.

The Times: Labour considering cuts to Restoring Your Railway and dropping HS2 Euston

Housing is easier to catalyse private investment for, given developers can build it and sell it off within a few years, without an extended payback time. But if we want sustainable development, we need to deliver the infrastructure for it to be built around. A mistake I'm sure. Fairly little...

Class 810 for East Midlands Railway Construction/Introduction Updates

I also happen to think they look very good - I actually think the more contrasty yellow front livery did them favours in that regard too.
