How many HSTs do EMT actually need?

As there is little (no?) 125mph running on the Midland Main Line then surely the answer is none? Could the HST services not replaced by LHCS at 110/100 mph?

Would they be able to match HST acceleration/capacity? Also you'd need maybe ten or eleven rakes so perhaps 80-88 vehicles (including first, standard and buffet) can we source that many?

Time to crack out the sectional appendix:

  • The fasts are 110 from Cricklewood to Harpenden, where they drop to 90–100 for a few miles, 110 restarts north of Luton as far as Wellingborough
  • It's then 100 to Leicester (where there are some very slow limits around the station), and 110 north of there to Trent junction
  • To Chesterfield via Derby is a mixture of 100 and 110, and then mostly 80–90 to Sheffield
  • To Nottingham is 80 all the way

The only bit of 125 that EMT services use is Doncaster to York (and that's only once a week), plus Derby to Burton when they used to send some services over that way.

They've kind of been a permanent feature of the MML for almost thirty years now though. You honestly think that there is sufficient loco hauled stock, and for that matter, locos to haul it, available that could, as Ainsworth74 says, match the HSTs in terms of acceleration, timings and capacity? Why change a good working arrangement?

I suppose that HSTEd's query could be more accurately phrased as "how many HSTs do EMT have diagrammed for service each day?" If you were looking to be pedantic.

The line is currently being upgraded to allow sections of 125mph running though, I believe.

I believe work is already underway on upgrading sections to 125mph - apparently there was a test run with a Meridian a few months back in connection with this.

I was talking to a friend of mine who recently left EMT as a HST fitter at NL and he said there is not actually that much slack in the HST since EC acquired one of their HSTs. If they lease another one it will become even less.

Just checked Abrail again and several Mark 3 loco hauled coaches still have "to be refurbished for East Coast" written next to them.

Does anyone know what is happening to them? Will they be converted into HST trailers or are East Coast forming a loco hauled train from them?

They've been like that for a long time. There were some that used to say the same but for NXEC for a while

Again with an EMT HST....

How many HSTs do EMT actually need?

Nine on a weekday (includes one hot spare that can - and does - cover for either HST or Meridian).

Seven at weekends.

Add to this one set on planned maintenance and there isn't much surplus now available from their fleet of 10 sets and 4 spare trailers.
