Seeing as it went out of the east end we were thinking it might have been Mentor testing the wires?

One frustrating issue now being raised is the continuance of rail replacement buses for early morning and late night services . Especially when there is no engineering work going on .Confirmed in the WON for thist week there is no work on, and even more frustrating is they are actually diverting services from the Atherton line via Bolton and Westhoughton,!

I wonder if Bolton RRB station will ever close.

On a lot of the stations on the newly electrified line including Bolton there are overhead warning signs as you enter the platform about there being live wires above the rails (I think previously someone put the signs for Chorley which made an arch over the entrance).

Salford Central does not have these but it does have this warning for drivers at the end of the platform towards Crescent:

That was Lostock Parkway not Chorley

At Bolton and Lostock there are pre-existing road bridges at the platform ends. It could be that the need to take the wire under these bridges means they don't meet the platform clearance in the latest standard. Reduced clearance is possible subject to risk assessment, and warning signs for passengers may be one of the mitigations that the risk assessment has recommended.

If this is indeed the reason for the signs, there is no overbridge near Salford Central, so I would expect it to be fully compliant to this standard and therefore not to need other risk mitigation measures.

Interesting, thank you.

If anyone learns that the standard heading about Sprinter and 75mph max is inaccurate please post asap.

No timing loads (Sectional Running Times) exist for EMUs on the Bolton corridor yet (probably).

Edit: Added in Allerton<=> Preston paths

However the runs are preceded by http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/S05791/2019/01/22/advanced 5Z90 from Allerton depot to Preston pathed as 319 (and as far as I know only 319s are now living there)

Better hope that network rail update the Sectional Appendix!

There's a blanket ESR of 75mph being imposed for electric traction only, from 00.01 Sunday 13/1 and applying from Salford Crescent to Euxton Jn.

Imposed until testing complete. Reading between the lines, this suggests there might indeed be electric traction booked via Chorley from Sunday.

The Weekly Operating Notice for this week (Saturday 12th Jan) has updated sectional appendix pages for Windsor Bridge South Jn to Burden Jn which have the enhance running (upto max 100mph).

As with north of Bolton to Chorley, this clearly hasn't been signed off so the 75mph speed restriction will be in place (also like Bolton - Chorley) .as nothing is in the WON Section A, it will initially be an Emergency Speed Restriction until it can be published as a Temporary Speed Restriction .

I'm not convinced it's to allow EMUs to run on Sunday, but happy to be proved wrong.

The WON late last year also had these speed increases detailed, but the work never went ahead.

As of yet there is no published ESR, but the SA pages are dated the 13th so the ESR wouldn't come into force until tomorrow anyway.

So will this be the end of using Class 185s on the Bolton line as it could end up disrupting other MUs that need to use the variations to speed limits to keep time (presumably starting in May)?

Northern are currently hiring 3 185s a day from TPE because they're short of DMUs; this will stop when they have enough DMUs to replace them.

I think TPE still run the odd 185 on Scottish services, to maintain driver knowledge. If this continues, 185s will still make an occasional appearance of the line.

Northern gets around 50 2nd hand units and is still short. Hires 3 185s off TPE then hires 170s with drivers to TPE for Leeds Huddersfield.
Strange old world.
