Then they'll become Bored Trolls :)

See what I did there?

I see what you did there! Get that man a drink!

I think we should have twenty coach 377/5s on HS4 from Holyhead to Cardiff

What? Off topic? Sorry :D

I hope they'll be running a stopping service. I expect every train to call at Conwy. Let's face it, Conwy's been crying out for a 16tph intercity service for years!

That's a very fair point!

I have made that distinction.
He joined 4 days ago and has made 200 posts. None of those that I read contained any fact, nor did they 'debate' anything. More an expression of a vision, which may have a home on here, but surely not in existing threads on other matters.

This forum has quite a few 'specialist' areas where quick fire opinion sits well, but it doesn't fit into the 3 or 4 threads he's been active in, with the possible exception of the thread Any ideas what the Government is going to suggest? which seems to invite broader speculation.

I wasn't meaning anyone in particular really, just that sometimes people do make that mistake.

I've finally found the poster you're referring to, and I agree, it can't really be termed debate!

I wish he'd go to the Isle of Sodoff.

Sorry about that, folks!

But that thread or a very similar one was going to be started by somebody, so I shouldn't really feel too guilty really.

Got nothing to feel guilty about. It would have happened anyway. Nothing wrong with good debate as long as it doesn't start decending into personal insults and such.

Sure some of us can be a bit annoying in some circumstances and stick to our guns on things but I'm sure the vast majority of us can see we have our reasons for doing so (like the DOO Debate and being a Guard) and be understanding towards that.

It's when people start making assumptions, sticking to their guns and arguing without bringing anything to the table in terms of evidence, past experience etc. That's when it gets annoying, frustrating etc.

Personally I like these forums. Sometimes a debate will get a bit above my head but I think most things can be like that for people. You get to learn new things, new points of view and provides you with a different perspective on things. Compared to most forums, this one is mostly troll free most of the time.

Long may that continue! :D

I think he's going for the record of the most inane posts in the shortest time-scale, personally!

I'm still a newbie here, but I've generally found the place quite friendly and welcoming. It occurs to me that the problem isn't playing "Fantasy Railway" Let's face it, I bet most of us have ideas above our station about that. I know I certainly do! (you've not heard my plans for the SWML, HS3-9 or IEP yet!) ;)

It's mostly about making sure that you talk about it in the right place and don't derail* other people's threads, or blindly ignore others discussion on the matter and keep restating the same unsubstantiated claims over and over again.

*Sorry! The pun wasn't intended, but now it's there, I don't have the heart to remove it!

Political arguments- er, discussions always have a tendency to go on for ever, and i've never really understood why, since people who argue about Politics tend to have very decided views, and one person is very unlikely to be able to sway someone else from their Decided views, however persuasive they may think their arguments are.

have i mentioned my idea for cascading class 221s to Waterloo-Exeter? It's an idea that I think might have some mileage. I'll have to mention it some time.

That sounds almost like a straightforward strategy. Mine involves 25kV overhead to Salisbury, Portsmouth and Bournemouth via Baskingstoke, fitting pans to the 444/450 fleet and the addition of "Class 244/250" DEMUs to work in multiple with their electric counterparts up to the split points at Salisbury and Southampton!

I've always wanted to see 170's on the North Downs and 158's instead of Turbo's on the B+H for some reason

I think HST's should work the Maesteg and Cardiff Valley lines!

After watching a HST stride past a 170 west out of Haymarket at not much more than 50mph (the 170 had a slight head start too) I firmly believe there is a market for short HSTs on the E-G...

A diesel Desiro would leave any of them choking on its smoke.

Class 159's should go to Island Line with the service running in 2 bits to avoid the problem of Ryde Tunnel.

Nooooo! the through trains will go through the Solent Tunnel

Of course. Although, to be honest, is a Solent Tunnel or a Holyhead to Dún Laoghaire Irish Sea Tunnel really that far fetched? I mean looking 50+ years ahead

IIRC a Stranraer to Belfast tunnel was mooted years ago (in the middle of 'the troubles :o) but I think the idea was quickly shelved. Maybe HS2 could eventually be extended to Belfast?????

They were both seriously considered; i saw something only recently in a magazine about an idea for a tunnel across the North Channel between Stranraer/Larne back around the beginning of the 20th c, and a Solent Tunnel has been considered more than once, I'm pretty sure. They'd both be technically feasible.

They'd probably need SDO at Smallbrook Junction. In fact, they're so huge they'd probably need SDO at Southampton Central! I'd settle for 390s on that route instead. :D

While the front power car was at Shanklin, the rear one'd still be at Ryde Pier Head.

What about the difference in gauges between Britain and Northern / Republic of Ireland?
