I've read suggestions that the cost of the carriage is the cheap bit. You've then got to pay for it to be moved, pay for somewhere to store it, and that's before you even start to think about any repairs / maintenance / changes to interior. Deep pockets required!
The downfall of the ”315 preservation” group!

What's the history of the /8 subclass?
They were modified for use on the Stansted express to work alongside the /7 units. They received new seat covered, carpet and luggage racks were fitted. Apart from that they are pretty much the same as the /5 subclass

317881-892 were converted from 317321/324-328/330/331/333-336 at Doncaster Works in 2006.

More units were needed for Stansted Express to provide an 8 car train every 15 minutes.

Following Greater Anglia refresh at Clacton, the class 317/8 that remain are now identical to class 317/5 apart from the luggage racks.

I sent a tweet to Greater Anglia today asking about 317 usage from Monday (timetable change) they replied back saying they will still be running. How many and diagrams I don’t know. Nice to hear that though. I’ve just got off 511 at Cambridge which ran fast from Bishops Stortford due to earlier problems at Northumberland Park. Nice to catch a fast one.

Assuming one new class 720 per week, that means they'll need 317s for at least five more weeks. Even then they'd probably hang on for a couple more weeks on standby. I wonder how they are leased. Is it month by month?

Don’t know about the lease agreement on 317s but the mileage will be a big factor in how long they will be around for. If the units get too close to their mileage limit it’s likely they will be withdrawn rather than the leasing company paying for the work to be done

Who pays for the work will depend on the lease. It's a moot point as either way, overhauls are not going to happen.

Take with a pinch of salt disclaimer two drivers have told me one today and one a fortnight ago. 317 should remain till end june to mid July. However diagrams could alter week by week. Like at momment should only be 3 diagrams. However somedays 2 or even 3 extra stp short term extras diagrams ie most days 5 pairs are out instead of 3.
Somedays 6 pairs are out.
However from may timetable no booked workings. But extra diagrams vice 720 will occur and will slowly dwindle. To early July. However maybe why today's scrap move was cancelled. Possibly to keep 317s at Ely for parts maybe?

How many serviceable 317s are left? Wikipedia says 19. Was out today and looked for 886 but couldn’t see it

There are 17 units in service or at Ilford. 317507 and 317886 haven't worked for weeks.
317886 was taken out of service Monday 25th April 2022. Due to a fault.
Due to coupled up with 317510 it remained in service throughout that day.
However for 317886 that was it's final day up until now.

Well, having been a few days into the new timetable now it seems that 317s are still being frequently used. Seen units running to Bishops Stortford, Hertford East and Cambridge since Monday. Latest rumour is that they could be around to august as Stansted Airport is expected to get very busy during the commonwealth games, and therefore needing extra capacity. Don’t know how true this is though.

Summarising the above then, that leaves a pool of 12 that are in service and in regular use;
339/340/343/347/501/502/504/506/508/510/881/884

Also 338/338/511. 507 and 886 haven't worked for weeks but not yet carted off to Ely.

338 & 504 were coupled together for most, if not all of last week. I was lucky enough to travel on 338 at least three times last week, twice on Cambridge workings and once on the Hertford East link.
