Just noticed the livery on these is actually the same as the DLR minus vinyls. Also why does the CIS in the second video show "www.southernrailway.com" - they're not fooling anyone! ;)

Was sat at Brighton all shiny when I rolled in.

Shocked that there's no decent FC seats on a "Premium Service".

Yes they do seem to be taking the P*** as far as first class is concerned although personally I would get rid of First on fairly short Lomdon Commuter/Airport runs anyway, but if your going to have it would certainly expect better seats than standard. In fact I would only pay for first if it was 2+1 seating.

Regarding First Class and Southeastern placing it in the middle will southern be looking into doing the same?

I also find it interesting Southern have lots of high density seating whereas Southeastern aside from the /9s have much nicer seating throughout whereas on Southern it is often just the front and read coaches apart from a few units. Then there are those which have a weird mixture of low density and high density seating which was not standardised during their refurbishment...

Anyway sorry that was off topic ...

Shocked these 387/2s do not resemble the 379 interior as they seem to have a pretty good interior

Would have made sense for the 379s to have had an add on for gatwick express but. I guess the build requirements were not in line

Is there an official name for these 387 style seats?

That's just testing the system for the 'wrong ticket sting'. :)

Or 377/6 and 377/7 style. They seem to be the newest iteration of seats that pay attention to posture for normal passengers. They are firmer so that they keep their shape for longer unlike some of the softer cushions where after heavy use for a few months, the hard frame of the seat can be felt on the back of the thighs.

I saw all the comments about the poor seating, assuming that they were going to be akin to the seating in 172s etc.; having seen the video linked previously, I didn't quite expect to see seats that resembled propped up sheets of chipboard! :o

First Class in the South East is basically a seat reservation.

The seats are made by Fainsa (spain), but having browsed through their catalogue, I can't find the model name. I've heard them nicknamed Graveboards because of their shape, but Ian Walmsley simply refers to them as 'Ubiquitous Fainsa seats' in his recent article about the 230s. I think that referring to them as Fainsa seats will probably suffice for now until Class377/5 comes here and tells us their name, product code, weight rating, and countless other trivias!

Not sure why you would be shocked as these are these are the standard seats that Bombardier have been using on 387's and recent 377's for standard and 1st, so I wouldn't have expected anything different unless perhaps the customer had insisted otherwise but as previous trains were obtained by Southern that would seem unlikely, but I would have expected better 1st Class seats, but clearly Southern 1st now also applies for Gatwick Express!

Yeah, for GatEx I would have expected 2+1 First Class. I certainly see no reason for paying for it if it's 2+2; these aren't exactly overcrowded commuter services.

I know a few people seem to like those seats but I find them terrible especially compared to the earlier seats that in 375's and some 377's and of course what's worse is the fact that the Class 700 seats look similar well except 1st, and that epacer thing as well.

I did think maybe people were excessively moaning about them until I got on a 377/6 a few weeks ago.

Surely it was "ironing boards"? ;) A description that annoys me a lot <(

Yes, it was ironing boards. No idea how or why I mixed up gravestones and ironing boards but I appear to have created some sort of discount memorial!

I'm travelling into London from Luton airport parkway later this week.
I've never even seen a class 387, so would really like to get my first ride on one as well.

I've been looking at the timetables. Am I right in thinking my best bet would be a Brighton service?

Is there a route through Luton that is exclusively 387 operated? Or will it be potluck?

Thanks

PS - I'll suffer the seats :D

I believe the Sutton services are all Class 319, and the Brighton services are mainly Class 387s with the occasional Class 377.

When airport customers ask what you get for a First Class fare, as they sometimes do, I'm not sure what GatEx will be able to tell them with a straight face.

The 'you're paying for a guaranteed seat' line hardly applies to the 50% of services which will continue to shuttle between Victoria and Gatwick only. And in any event, without any on-train staff but with identical seating, occupancy of First is likely to be similar to Standard.

It's interesting that money was found, recently, to remove First Class from Thames Valley turbos and compensate season ticket holders accordingly. Unless the numbers are catastrophic in terms of refunds and future lost revenue, I think DFT/GTR will head down the same route, and possibly before full fleet introduction of the 700s.

What a high quality interior: spacious and comfortable with a nice first class section and plenty of luggage space. And that livery! Wow.

Oh silly me, I forgot these were only going to be used on the designated Express service from London to the second busiest airport in the country, sorry. :(

Sadly I can't find any images or reference to it online, but ironically can remember at privatisation, a concept of a Three Class train for the Gatwick Express, with 1+1 big armchair seating in the most premier class.

Now it's, "Hard seat or standing Sir?"

Or it would be if there was actually an on board attendant.

In China, they quite often literally translate the classes as 'Hard seat' and 'Soft seat'.

I'm a bit confused as with WiFi and power sockets throughout these trains, there is no difference whatsoever in First class. Could they be discontinuing it?

No, the lack of difference is commonplace across Southern and Southeastern, and now the 387's have it as well.

The only Electrostar that does have any differences between Standard and first class really is the 379s with their 2+1 seating using the same seats as can be found in first class on VTEC HSTs and Mk4s, XCs HSTs and Chilterns Mk3s business zone.

I just find it really cheap and nasty, lack of foresight and lack of thought for passengers. The seats aren't really adequate for standard class passengers let alone 1st class. It really is down penny pinching or laziness in not looking to get in decent seats.

What surprises me is southern/Gatwick express/ GTR management can sit in 1st class and they haven't even though about themselves regarding this. You would've thought they'd want quality.

I was sure I've read somewhere that they were going for a special interior for these new gatex's, but when I saw one today at Brighton all I could think was, first class punters will not be happy, going from nice reclining seats to iron boards with an ill fitting headrest cover. The whole thing screams quality.

I'll have you know Govia is miles ahead of all the competition...

In a race to the bottom that is.
