If we're wanting to count stations that are very close to one another without a direct rail connection between them, the the two Dorchester stations are pretty close.

London Kings Cross and London St Pancras too. Literally next door to each other, so close that they actually share an underground station.

Birmingham Moor Street and Birmingham New Street too, barely a quarter of a mile apart. They are closer to each other by foot than Moor Street and Snow Hill are.

Bishop Auckland (Mainline) to Bishop Auckland (Weardale) are just a few meters apart along the same line, though for a passenger to get from one to the other you'll have to walk all the way round a DIY store.

The 07.08 service from Dunblane to bridge of allan. Timetabled for 2 minutes. It's downhill all the way, I've a feeling that the power might even be shut off before it enters the kippenross tunnel. Anyone able to confirm and what the average speed would be over the distance for journey of 2 minutes?

Dunno the distance, but Hauptbahnhof & Karlsplatz stations on Munich S-bahn are so close together that the other station is visible down the rail tunnel

Wrexham General and Exchange were adjacent, as were Manchester Exchange and Victoria (indeed they shared a platform). Currently, Catford and Catford Bridge are a few steps from each other.

You would have been hard pressed to beat Oldham Central and Oldham Clegg Street, under your proviso stated above, when they were both open, in my younger days.
The onbly thing that remains is the old goods warehouse even the lines are gone now due to the infernal metrolink that hardly anyone wants

Are there an stations closer together anywhere in the UK (Or even the world!) than West India Quay, Canary Wharf and Herron Quays on the DLR?

What are the closest NR ones? The Lympstone Commando and Lympstone Village?

Commando is closer to Exton - 36ch

Oh that would be the St Budeaux stations in Plymouth - the entrances are directly opposite each other

The 07.08 service from Dunblane to bridge of allan
This is actually part of a very long service, 06:39 Perth - Newcraighall

There aren't that many short services in Scotland any more
Glasgow - Anniesland, most services are 19 minutes
Glasgow - Paisley Canal, most services are 18 minutes
20:08 Newcraighall - Haymarket 20:26
07:34 Lenzie - Glasgow 07:47
06:45 Coatbridge - Cumbernauld 06:57
06:10 Motherwell - Coatbridge 06:21 seems to be the winner in Scotland

If heritage / preserved railways count then Barry Island to Plymouth Road on the Barry Island Railway is seperated by little more than the distance of a crossover. This picture was taken from Barry Island station, the class 14 is at Plymouth Road station.

thats the one i was searching for!

I wonder, therefore if the three stations i mentioned at the start of the thread are the closet 3 stations, rather than the closest pair of stations! Any advance?

As posted by me some years ago on uk.railway:

> Using the distances between station centres given in the excellent Quail
> track diagrams, the shortest distances between stations I can find on UK
> railways (excluding purely LT lines) are:
>
> Ty Glas to Birchgrove 17 Chains
> City Thameslink to Blackfriars 20 Chains
> Whitchurch To Coryton 23 Chains
> Rhiwbina to Whitchurch 25 Chains
> Newhaven Town to Harbour 26 Chains
> Barbican to Farrington: 27 Chains
> Alexandra Parade to Duke Street 27 Chains
> Manchester Oxford Road to Deansgate 29 Chains
> Walton to Orrell Park 30 Chains
> Belle Vue to Ryder Brow 30 Chains
> Dumbarton Central to Dalreoch 30 Chains
> Maesteg to Maesteg Ewenny Rd 31 Chains
> Wandsworth Rd to Clapham High St 31 Chains
> Devonport to Devonport Dockyard 32 Chains
> Bootle Oriel Road to New Strand 33 Chains
> Birkenhead Central to Green Lane 34 Chains
> Manor Road to Hoylake 34 Chains
> Moorcate to Barbican 35 Chains
> Penarth to Dingle Road 35 Chains
> Fairwater to Waun-Gron Park 35 Chains
> Sundridge Park to Bromley North 35 Chains

To which, "Will Salt" added in reply:

The following Glasgow stations should also be included:

Argyle St to Glasgow Central 28 chains
Shawlands to Pollokshaws East 30 chains
Springburn to Barnhill 31 chains
Pollokshields East to Queen's Park 33 chains
Glasgow Central to Anderston 34 chains
Queen's Park to Crosshill 35 chains

Incidentally, the longest and shortest distances between stations on
the Glasgow Underground are 48 chains (Govan to Partick, Outer Circle)
and 26 chains (Bridge St to West St, Outer Circle).

Yes, it is, 20228 (CFD number 2004) taken at the Barry Island Railway diesel gala in 2006.

Coryton to Ty Glas (1 mile 38 chains) must surely be the closest FIVE stations on one line on the national network.

Some stations on international borders must come close. Last week I caught a train from Kreuzlingen in Switzerland to Konstanz in Germany which must have taken all of 90 seconds. A check on the map shows they are very close as the crow flies. I also went to Bayerisch Eisenstein on the Germany-Czech border where the German station and Zelezna Ruda Alzbetin station are part of the same building but have separate platforms a few metres apart. You can get a train across the border but they only stop at one.
