On the face of it, this piece of news doesn't fit into this thread, but please bear with me...
Most of you reading this will be aware of Mark Howarth and his stewardship of the Western Greyhound bus business that gave First in Cornwall a good run for their money over a period of years.
Now Mark has resurfaced as new Interim Managing Director of the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company, having served as a Board Director for a while. At present the ISSC run all passenger services to Scilly, both by the Scillonian boat from Penzance and fixed-wing aircraft from Land's End and Newquay Airports, as well as further afield. They also run the bulk of freight services by boat, the Mali Rose having recently supplanted the Gry Maritha, again from PZ.
The significance of Mr Howarth's appointment may well lie in the shenanigans now going on regarding an attempt to resuscitate the helicopter link between Penzance and St Mary's/ Tresco that was severed five years ago. The promoters of the revived helicopter service, having secured planning permission for a new 'heliport' very close to the old one (now occupied by Sainsbury's) found that permission challenged by the ISSC on the grounds that it had been illegally granted, for which Judicial Review was sought. Fast forward a few months, and Cornwall Council seem to have now accepted that they did not carry out the full 'environmental impact' studies incumbent upon them, so the helicopter people have put in for revised planning permission in return for which the ISSC have withdrawn their application for Judicial Review. It all sounds very interesting, and the barest bones are being reported in the supine press, but I think I can state without hesitation that Mr Howarth's name will be in the news down here a fair bit in the coming months, even years.
