I'm planning a trip tomorrow part-way along the Settle-Carlisle line. I've never been before, but I know I want to cross the Ribblehead viaduct. Dent is the next station, so I thought I'd alight there and have a wander round, before coming home. Ask a stupid question, but is Dent a good place for a three-hour ramble? Or are there better?

I might be wrong, but I think Dent station is pretty much in the middle of nowhere, the main idea from the station website is that you can access other areas of interest by getting on the train there, not getting off!

I'm not much interested in going anywhere else, really. I just want to travel over the Ribblehead viaduct and after that go for a walk.

If you like the great outdoors, and roaming about on lonely moors for a few hours, it's probably a good place to go!

I;ve been to dent, Dad was on holiday in the dent village, i had to work the day before so i got the train. And Dent is 4 miles from the actual village and in the middle of nowhere, however the scenery from the highest station in the Uk is beautiful.

In that 3 hour ramble you may as well walk back to Ribblehead and experience the viaduct from the bottom :)

Didn't there used to be some sort of tourist bus service at Dent station, or am I confusing it with soemwhere else on the line?

The road up to the station is fairly steep but there is a normal bus like once a week from the village to the station/.

Any other suggestions along the line? I'm travelling from London and I have to be back tomorrow.

I dont see why you couldnt walk to Dent, maybe 45 minutes or so. Saying that, as you do have an interest in the viaduct, maybe try the walk Fincra has suggested back to the viaduct, under, then up to Ribblehead station. Thats if there is a route to take of course.

It is possible to get to the Viaduct from Dent, there is a couple of stretches on road. But have a look here

Switch the map to OS style :) (Scroll to the Right to find the station)

Sod it. I'm going to buy some supplies, catch the train to Dent and see what happens.

Now THAT is a good plan, just see where it takes you but dont stray too far from the railway line!

The walk back from Dent, over the top of Blea Moor, behind the 'box, under Ribblehead Viaduct and up to thw station is one I've been hoping to get chance to do for some time! I'm sure it'd be doable in three hours, though I'd check that with an OS map (and take one with you!).

Thought Corrour was the highest in the UK?:)

Thats seemingly right :) Dent station itself advertises it as being the highest station in England :D

There are also good walks from Garsdale (or use the bus link to Hawes for a linear walk back or circular walk in upper Wensleydale & bus return).

It is a long climb back up the hill from Dent village to Dent station!

Make sure you have the OS explorer map with you.
I'll be doing some walks from these stations next week.

I had a good day out - it's great being in the middle of nowhere. I didn't have a map so I didn't stray too far and never left the beaten track, but I enjoyed the walk I did have. The views are amazing and I hope to go back sometime soon.
The journey up was good, though I was a bit perplexed at Leeds when the train for Carlisle was formed of one two-car unit and one single-car unit. I didn't catch the numbers, but they were different stock. I don't recall seeing that before, but the guard said it was because a party had booked out most of one coach.
Coming back was pleasant. I got home at about 2300 very tired!

Small note, but the guard(s) didn't check tickets in coach B on the East Coast train either going to, or coming from Leeds.

You can get odd formations like that, I'm guessing it was something like 153 (single car) + 156 or 158. The best formation I've ever seen was a 153+150+153!

Interesting that the guard said the carriage was booked out, I didn't think Northern did bookings!

There were tags in probably about half the seats. They read something like 'Party Booking'. I overheard someone else ask the guard why the train was a three-car.

3 cars regularly run on the S+C between Carlisle and Leeds, normally a 156/8 and 153. I'm also sure I remember reading that one working was always diagrammed for these units as well. Never seen anyone book seats for a Northern service apart from when the managers came on a train once.

I have read somewhere that Northern do provide seat reservations for large group bookings between Settle & Carlisle.
I know a lot of coach firms run tours which include a single ride over the S&C. Generally they drop the passengers off at Settle & pick them up again at Appleby (or vv).

As the others above have said, they do accommodate large groups on the S-C line, often associated with tour companies. They also book out seats for The Valley Curry House, at Corbridge station, on the Newcastle-Carlisle line on certain trains: both seem like eminently sensible business strategies to support rural lines!

Heard about the Curry Train but didn't realise they did reservations as well for that. Normally not many people on the 142 to Corbridge anyway so wouldn't make too much difference.
