Hello,

Tomorrow I plan to purchase a Leeds to Chesterfield day return for £19.90. I plan to go south on the 07:05 Leeds to Plymouth cross country.

My trip is part business and part personal, and my return time depends how well I get on with a lady.

If I miss the 22:45 Chesterfield to Sheffield (last connection into the last sheffield to Leeds, the 23:15) can I do any of the following:

catch the 01:02 Chesterfield to sheffield, stay overnight in Sheffield, then travel on to Leeds at my convenience

-travel on the above and then go via Manchester (normally not a permitted route for Leeds to Chesterfield) on 03:25 Sheffield to Manchester then to Leeds at 05xx?

-ask station staff to provide a taxi or batmobile

Or is it the case that my day return ticket dies at 04:29?

Thanks

Day returns expire at 0429 on the following day, at which point the guard will press a button and you will be ejected from your seat and projected upwards into open space. (OK, the second part may not be true.)

If there are any staff around at that time I am sure they can provide contact details for a local taxi firm, but it may be cheaper to book some accommodation and travel the next day.;)

Do I have any grounds for saying that my journey home 'cannot be completed in a day' or is it my own silly fault for not making the last train?

There is no longer provision for "journeys cannot be completed on the day" to continue the next day for Day tickets.

Does that rule still exist for day returns? I was reading a thread that implied it didn't...

For the £2ish difference I'd definitely go for the Anytime Return.

You could, keeping an eye on its progress, taxi to Doncaster and attempt to blag your way onto the 2330 London Kings Cross - Leeds. No guarantees, it may be too early for you and of course it doesn't actually pick up at Doncaster.

I was, of course, being the advocate of the devil. Please could I request others to view the last few pages of this thread and add to the debate on,'cannot be completed in the day'.
