If they didn't have the gangways, then they would have the normal Turbostar front end just like the other 172/0s and /1s, though there are some digital mock ups out there of (IIRC) the LO 172s with the Turbostar front end with the LM 172 style of light cluster.

I can't work out why everybody thinks that they're so quiet. There's less of an audible engine note than the 150s, but they have one of those annoying "shouty" Turbos by the sounds of things, just like the buses that work the 35 route past my house (Volvo B7s I think after a little investigation but I'm none too savvy with buses) which have a reputation with the drivers of being "all Turbo and no b*ll*cks". I was taking some photos of the training and mileage accumulation runs the other day at a favoured canalside location roughly equidistant from Shirley and Whitlocks End stations, and they didn't half shatter the peace. For a start, you could hear the door closing chimes when they were at Whitlocks End, whereas with the 150s you only sometimes hear them as they pull away from the station if the wind is in the right direction.

So IMO the 172s are indeed "all Turbo and no b*ll*cks", which often seems to be the case with modern buses and trains, replacing the more manly grumbly engine notes of twenty years ago that everything seemed to have back then.

It could be the different transmission (mechanical as opposed to hydraulic) that is giving the 172s a different sound.

The 172s do have the light cluster as a 378 though.

As of Monday morning, 2 off 172 three cars set will be in service. then every week its hoped that 2 sets will then be added to the roster as each week passes. By the new timstable in December all 2 & 3 car set must be in service.

This info was given by a guard at Stourbridge this afternoon. This is the last weekend with total domination from Class150 around B'ham Snow Hill/Moor Street

Boo! I'd have taken advantage of it all, sadly no time to do so and I'll have to suffer the 172s soon by the looks of it :(

Regretting doing so many hours at work now...

I've only got 172345! Then again we've got at least a decade to get them.

It's the 150s last day of dominance.:cry::cry:

Went down to the railway just but then I realised it's Sunday, and all I saw was 170608 and the rear end of 150016 (which seems to be following me :|). Now's the last chance to get those sprinter shots — I wish I had a proper camera. :(

Suiting up for the occasion, very dapper :)

It's very strange to think that today is the last day of the "old order" in full on the Snow Hill lines. Unless the 172s suddenly start falling apart after a few days in service, god forbid. ;)

Are LM still keeping some class 150 units

Yes - 3 x 2 car units - and it is clearly explained in a few other threads about 'Class 150s', some of which you've probably taken part in - so why go over old ground?

very nice smooth quiet ride , there not very fast at exelerating ,maybe due to the eletronics ,but once they get too about 20mph there off like a greyhound .wasnt impressed from a standing start at old hill ,on the "bank " very slow pulling away . they do seem to take time in getting to 20mph /ish
theres just a rattle over the points ,and thats all the noice there is , a bit like being in a modern car ,so quiet you can talk on the train to some one at normal voice level.

seats are very nice ,plenty of leg room and theres some room between you ,and the next person sitting by you . its very easy to walk down the train too with the extra room between seats . i tried every car ,and every type of seat ,there all good . (and plenty of runs )
theres plenty of room by the toilet end too for wheel chairs etc , didnt test the loo out, another day ?

has a passinger you will like them , has a train Enthusiast, you wont .
theres no rattle /roll /noise . it does not feel like your on a train :(
think mrk 1 coach ,and mrk 4 coach ,but better .

172339 had one of the doors (front) isolated for some reason .
the other unit out was running was 172345.

well done LM on your new trains , i hope they serve you well

and if your reading anyone from LM staff, can we have some sort of farwell do for 150s before they go ,something like they did on the cross city line ,
headboard etc and 150001/002 and a few 153s out :D:D thanks

anyone know why 31601 was passing through snowhill today /and were it was going ??

how did your ride go ??

A farewell tour would be very nice — I guess that will be in December.

I boarded the 11:44 from Birmingham Snow Hill for the 1st time on a Class 172, it was a different ride to the Class 150, felt the air conditioning, comfy smooth ride and even got a interview to be on central news/ITV in the midlands :)

Sounds good, I do like them, I only went a short distance on them so I look forward to going to Birmingham on them. I have Central news on now so I can keep an eye out for the report on the 172's :)

Well, they sound great and I shall have to get on one at the weekend ( back at school, year 10!). Sounds like timekeeping may be tight but the 150s always get off to a bit of a slow start at the bottom of the bank. I remember going on a 150 2 weeks ago all stops and it was as you described going up on a 172 so no change and the rattle over the points, no change there. As long as there is no vibrating of windows and panels in the seating area, I'll be very happy. It'll be strange having carpet!:D

Anyone know what they're to be used on over the weekend (10th/11th)? I will be in the Midlands for a few days hoping to sample the new trains but won't have time to take any train rides until probably Sunday.

Well last Wednesday 172345 certainly took off like a rocket at Droitwich. The sound good too.

I've just realised I'm going into year 10 also (my school uses a weird naming system for years). :)

The ride is different to a Class 150 and a lot smoother, i only see one fault with them! the seats facing towards you there might not be enough legroom but other than that, everything is good about a DMU

there also a video which i've edited annd uploaded onto Youtube from today events
