My nomination is definitely the translink CAF 4000 as it replacing the last of the DEMUs (DB 605 junk not far behind though) Any other nominations?

    It depends on your timespan.

In the 1960s it would be the Brush 4 (class 47).

512 were foisted on us, and they all looked the same - initially. Every other train had one on the front and until their appearance the wholesale slaughter of steam locos had been kept within manageable proportions.

However, that was then - and now some of those that remain have achieved celebrity status. But it was not always that way.

Unpopular with Enthusiasts, of course, isn't necessarily the same as unpopular with the travelling Public, although there sometimes is a correlation (looks at Voyagers.)
It's interesting to reflect that the HSTs when they were introduced, particularly on the ECML, were the subject of vehement hatred due to ousting the Deltics. And similarly, the 50s were not popular on the Western region due to doing the same to the Westerns.
And before that, the Westerns were hated for replacing the Castles and Kings, and so on. It all seems to go around. Look at how people seem to be getting fond of Sprinters now. :-?

    My nomination is class 220/221.

They live up to their name...Vomiters (especially first class vestibules after the loo has been flushed!)

As others have said, the Voyager is a good bet!

The 80 was an absolute marvel to travel on. I am glad I managed it before it was too late! And the 450 wasn't exactly bad either, but a Thumper engine in a 150 bodyshell just doesn't feel quite right... As for the 4000, among NI enthusiasts it will be red-hot favourite, but for me the jury is out until the day comes that I travel on one. A big shame that something like the 4K is replacing our beloved DEMUs nonetheless...

With regards to the remaining NI unit, the 3000, it will forever have a special place in my heart as the unit on which I had my first cab ride

Just to upset all the Peak haters on here. I hate everything especially the overrated 50s, 55s, 47s and the god ugly 37s along with the pretenders that are the class 40, anything English Electric.

I second that. Most peak haters in any case were not even born when they were actively running, and thus have nothing to base their comments on in any case.

I was, and I base my decision on nothing more than personal choice.
I have never worked on them so it's purely with my enthusiast head on when I say I dislike them

Based on D123 and 46010, I dislike Peaks. Oh, and 45112. First Peak and seriously unrateable.

Mind you, I do like pretty much everything EE!

Most hated train? Gotta be the Voyagers, closely followed by Pacers.

It is also an "age" thing I suspect.

Modern day design is all rounded shapes and curves, with no "angles" - cars, phones, laptops, etc, etc.

The noses on early diesel electric locomotives had a number of functions include retaining toilets, holding compressors, and of course allowing train crew to pass through the nose doors into the train.

They were also an early form of frontal protection for train crews used to having a boiler in front of them.

They were also built to last, and I cannot see much modern stock making 40 years.

I hate pendos with a passion. They're the one of the most uncomfortable trains I've travelled on apart from pacers.

Why Virgin decided to ditch the class 87 mk3 and dvt stock was beyond me. There was at least another 10 years in them.

Some of my basher mates did peaks. I didn't mind doing class 40's.

    Can't disagree.

Think my opinion is a bit biased because I've never experienced them. Suppose with the age thing you probably don't like my beloved 'Networkers'. :p

The Unit - The LOROL 378's - more because they are all longitude seating and they are something which if possible you would see on the Underground, would be better if they were like the new S Stock inside if possible.

The Loco - Class 90's - just dont like them and the few fires on board them recently arent helping my opinion.

Sorry chap but they all look the same to me !

Modern stock that I feel has some form of character are 158s, 317s, although I can live with 350s and 375s.

Why try one of the railtours that are operated by a 45 sometime ?

I've only ever been on one railtour... c2c last blue train!

Will have to give a 'Peak' ago sometime as usually I'm more interested in EMUs more than anything, although that has started to change after some recent haulage behind a 'Grid' and a 'Whistler'.

personally, I can't stand those Class 55s. Noisy, ugly things.

perhaps I ought to append ':P' to this post.

I know a lot of people dislike the class 66, I think largely for similar reasons to the 47. As an enthusiast, freight isn't of much interest to me as I can't travel on it. Equally, I've no issues with the 66 as it's helped keep rail freight competitive.

As a passenger, the trains I find most unpleasant to travel on are the 220/221s.

paradoxically, I don't think Voyagers are as bad as some. They sound good, and have awesome acceleration. I think the type of stock I dislike most of all is the class 321s, which are not only ugly but have dreadful seats - or they did originally anyway, and from what people say most of them still seem to.

You sir are a cad and a rotter! How dare you, I demand satisfaction!:lol:

It has got to be the Voyager or the bloody Pendo for me! Much as I hate the Pacers I have a grudging respect for them because they just wont die! They are like Damien!

Now being a Western Region person, when I was (alot) younger, you were either a 'Western' or a 'Deltic' man, I was obviously therefore a 'Western' man;) However, on seeing 55022 at Penzance on tour around 2007, i thought it was 'some' machine. Later the 'Hoovers' sorted the argument out i suppose in that they BECAME 'Westernised'....
I don't think therefore in reality personally i disliked any class, but a lot of enthusiasts I know hated 'Duffs', probably because they were all over the place? But of more modern units, Pacers closely followed by Voyagers must be out on their own  No contest really...

Not keen on 153s. I guess I haven't travelled on Voyagers enough to hate them yet; I don't mind them personally.

As for loo smells, well, the 175s I work on produce a funny boiled cabbage odour.

Remind me to give you a thumbs-up if ever I see you. Someone else doesn't like 321s! :p For those who are criticising the longitudinal seating on 378s, you do know that 321s have it at the cab ends? And to make it even worse, they're tip-up seats which are quite often broken - if you're lucky! The only use for a 321 is on OpenTTD, and then only until Pendos come along about 15 years later...
