There was meant to be one starting mid-Nov then the end of Jan, the Nov course isn't running now as far as I know but they have shifted the Jan course forward a fortnight.

Would it be safe to assume the course will be starting on the 12th Jan?

The first 2015 course starts mid-Jan, either the 12th or 19th, I can't remember. I very much doubt there will be two courses at the same training academy starting as closely together as the same month, even consecutive courses a month or two apart cause problems further down the line at the depots.

Wherever I lay my hat
There's half a dozen youngish chaps and a lass in NT uniforms, with a senior looking guy wearing an ID badge, on the 1220 train I'm on from Southport. Looks very much like some sort of training exercise.

ETA: Just asked the guard on here and they are trainee guards.

Sacking us all, or the strike?!

No driver wants to go out on strike, but there are only four days for negotiations to stop the first day's action now.

I was talking about strike action. Some Northern drivers a share a messroom with seem to think that the management will cave in.

Strike dates are suspended until the outcome of tomorrow's meeting, where an improved offer from Northern is to be considered.

Not yet, there's a referendum on the improved offer.

That has not stopped the recruitment. Internals did have their DM interviews last week and were supposed to hear by the end of week about places on January course.

Today might be the for chosen externals as well!

There were some interviews in August IIRC in response to vacancies advertised internally (they weren't advertised externally) - that was for the Sept course. There have been no more vacancies advertised internally or externally since then. Current interviews are for the Jan 2015 course.

If they are only interviewing internals for the January course then it's not looking too good for those currently treading water in the pool.:( Has there been a change in policy whereby Northern's trainee drivers are to be sourced via career progression perhaps?

Word is that northern will still require plenty of new drivers next year as east coast are looking to recruit about 30 drivers next year, inevitably some of these will be from northern.

No, it has always been the case that some internals take trainee driver jobs.

Northern don't preempt recruitment on the basis that other TOCs are advertising and Northern's qualified drivers might leave, they will however recruit in response to fill vacancies left by those who do leave the business.
