That's some nice tractor action there. Is the Poole to Weymouth Quay leg the bit that basically ran through the town?

Yes indeed.
It was a very interesting experience, sadly unlikely to be repeated.

I can only imagine. I've seen some videos on YouTube of it and it looks bizarre....particularly when the police and railway staff have to bounce some cars out of the way

Are the lines still there or have they gone now?

As far as I'm aware the tracks are still in situ.
I wouldn't like to go down there now, though - it was last used in 1999 so will be a bit shabby.

I was on 56030/47475 from Hellifield to Carlisle and back to Leeds and found this on a Facebook page. To say it was rammed with cranks, was a total understatement.

It was the 2nd day of a weeks freedom of the North East. Sadly I can't tell you what moves I made that day. First train off Newcastle to Carlisle, onto I think 47443 or 47503 over the S&C to connect with the 56/47 combo. Afterwards I done some 31/4s before, filling my boots on the Trans Pennine turns between Leeds, York, Scarborough and Newcastle.
A week.that started with 47484, included a few 31/4s, 40122 up and down the S&C, a 56 and an extended trip to Crewe roped in a few 37/4s from Machester/Liverpool to Cardiff turns and 37408 to Derby. Wish I had that list of that week. I had some good moves that week.

Some more moves from the KJ archives

6th November 1994

47828 Paddington to Banbury via Oxford
no suitable loco hauled back so
165035 Banbury to Paddington via High Wycombe

7th November 1984
Cannot find a lot of interest so here's one of my little forays down the Southend Victoria branch.
307125 Liverpool Street to Rochford
305408 Rochford to Liverpool Street
The return train was booked a 307 but was in practice used to get any units that required repairs back to Ilford so was anything from a three-car 305 through to a 12-car lash up.

8th November 1981
50019 Paddington to Exeter St Davids
50003 Exeter St Davids to Gloucester
50050 Gloucester to Paddington

9th November 1985
Was on one of the Southern Region Merrymaker tickets. Included free travel to/from London and a circular trip to somewhere far flung. But was more like a day rover on the main line!
43101+43109 St Pancras to Sheffield
47443 Sheffield to Manchester Victoria
45118 Manchester Victoria to Leeds
43051+43119 Leeds to Peterborough
43100+43193 Peterborough to Kings Cross
73123 Victoria to Gatwick Airport
43134 Gatwick Airport to Victoria

10th November 1979
I went 50 bashing. However, with Class 50 availability being very poor, I accrued a large amount of Sulzer mileage. At least there were two winners!
47125 Bristol Temple Meads to Exeter St Davids
50022 Exeter St Davids to Taunton
50004 Taunton to Newton Abbot
50031 Newton Abbot to Taunton
50007 Taunton to Torquay
45039 Torquay to Newton Abbot
47483 Newton Abbot to Taunton
46009 Taunton to Bristol Temple Meads

11th November seems to have almost nothing of any remote interest on the rails. I was either inactive or on the daily commute. Although one commute did turn into a mini-bash...
11th November 1988
319023+319058 St Helier to Wimbledon
5846+5919 Wimbledon to Clapham Junction
1258+2112+1718 Clapham Junction to Victoria
3010 Waterloo to Clapham Junction
1211+3117 Clapham Junction to Waterloo
3012 Waterloo to Clapham Junction
3077+3425+4201+4318 Clapham Junction to Waterloo
5713+5874 Waterloo to Wimbledon
6334 Wimbledon to Morden Road

12th November 1983
43123+43156
St Pancras to Derby
43093+43106 Derby to St Pancras

13th November 1979
A trip to London for a job interview. I got the job and 39 years later and I am still in London!
31424 Keynsham to Westbury
50009 Westbury to Paddington
50043 Paddington to Westbury
31403 Westbury to Bath Spa

14th November 1987
203001+207004
St Pancras to Fenchurch Street - The Inner City Express
Route London St Pancras - West Hampstead - Carlton Road Jn - Junction Road Jn - South Tottenham East Jn - Tottenham South Jn - Copper Mill Jn - Temple Mills East Jn - Channelsea North Jn - Carpenters Road North Jn - Carpenters Road South Jn - Bow Jn - Gas Factory Jn - London Fenchurch Street
I bailed at Fenchurch Street as there was no more required track. According to Six Bells Junction I had a lucky escape . Quote from SBJ "The tour was planned to visit every London terminus station, but was abruptly terminated after departing from Willesden Junction, when the rear DEMU vehicle derailed whilst traversing the Willesden Junction LL to Kensal Green Jn line, a few chains short of Kensal Green Jn. A display of pyrotechnics from the fouled third rail cut off power to the North London line, and after a delay of about an hour, passengers were detrained and allowed to walk back along the line to Willesden Junction High Level."

Both you and 55013 done some mega moves there Keith. You really done some miles on the 50s. I see a bit of a rarity in 46009, well in my days they were. I vaguely one being on a trans pennine turn one evening, passing Tyne Yard and there seemed to be many a wailing crank hanging out many of the windows, as it went past. Think there was only about a dozen at most, in service then.
55013, I never done any of the spin and win tours or Merrymakers, a mates brother used to regail stories of them to us, when we were young lads. We'd be listening to the tales, intently and more often than not, wide eyed and open mouthed, as we listened. I guess the GB Tours are as close as you get to a spin n win tour nowadays.
This truly is a great thread and I constantly read on in total awe.

I’ve had so little time recently to look through everyone’s trip reports (I will catch up with you all at some point I promise).
Still keeping up with this thread though.
As LSG said, it’s absolutely excellent. 8-)

Wouldn't mind a Tardis back to that day - all bar 47586 would be winners for me!

18/11/84 saw me returning to Birmingham from Manchester. There was some sort of power outage, so I was lucky enough to get 25259 dragging as far as Macclesfield. So excited was I about the rodent that I didn't note the electric at the time. 30 years later, thanks to the interweb, I discovered that 86242 was in charge from Macc to Brum, the red pen being applied belatedly in this case!

Saturday 22/11/1980 to Monday 24/11/1980 -
86232 on 1J20 0740 Euston - Shrewsbury was taken from London to Birmingham New Street to participate in an RCTS DMU railtour around the West Midlands the highlights of which included:
+ Tipton West - Prince's End - Wednesbury South Jn - Wednesbury Town - Bescot Curve Jn - Bescot Down Goods Line
+ Stourbridge Junction - Round Oak - Bescot Curve Jn - Pleck Jn - Walsall
+ Redditch 1972 station

This was followed by a leap from Moor Street to Stratford on Avon and return; outward via Dorridge return via the North Warwickshire line before heading to Bristol Temple Meads behind 46027 on the 1V97 1638 Leeds - Bristol.

The plan was to head for Swansea then end up back in London on the overnight Fishguard - Paddington. 45054 was taken to Cardiff on the 1C74 1830 from Plymouth. I then boarded an ADEX returning from York to Swansea headed by 47166 via the Vale of Glamorgan rather than wait for the service train I intended to catch. What a mistake to make! The duff expired near Briton Ferry to be rescued by 47029 but only after arrival at Swansea was after the Paddington train had departed. What to do? Not fancying a long fester in Swansea the answer appeared in the form of a Richards Bros coach to Fishguard (0B00 departing at 01:45 providing a connection for Ireland bound passengers stuck on trains behind the failure) then jump on 0S00 to Rosslare (IMO 7360605 Stena Normandica) and then a return trip from Rosslare to Dublin and return behind CIE 121 class 134 and 131.

The 1A11 0200 Fishguard - Paddington boat train was finally caught a day after I originally planned. 47148 hauled the train to Swansea to be replaced by 47534. At Cardiff a final loco change took place with 50030 taking over for the journey to Paddington. One last piece of excitement saw the train routed via Gloucester and the Golden Valley to Swindon.

Fast!
Left Preston 25 minutes late, arrived in Motherwell only about 5 mins late.
That was my one and only journey on it, as by then it's days were already numbered - a great shame.

Vaguely remember going on the APT between Preston and London probably around the same time, unfortunately the details are in one of my missing haulage books, but 370007 was leading (I have a pic) and could have been 003 trailing. This was my only trip on it, but definitely my rail highlight and am so pleased to have had the opportunity to travel on one. I remember being interviewed by ITN just after we left Preston but thankfully it was never shown on air

 I’m sure that you probably did alright Barrowjack...
Re - ‘The Future/The APT!!’.
I didn’t get anywhere near seeing an APT in actual service, which is why I’ve always been fascinated by any firsthand experiences.
The APT was some kind of mythical beast for my generation in the West Country, only to be seen on The News or Tomorrows World.
Yep, definitely not too many APTs to be seen in Exeter in 1985... ;)
So many questions for those that have been on one though. Like:
How did it ride?
And how quick did it accelerate compared to everything else?
Were the centre power cars noisy? Did they sound anything the new class 91 a few years later?

Blimey. Someone’s got to invent a decent Virtual Reality machine that can take us back to these times at some point haven’t they?
I’d pay good money to stick some kind of headset on and relive a few of the days that have been posted on this thread over the last couple of months.
I’d actually consider losing a digit for some of the them
(Maybe a toe for a day bashing 24s and 40s in North Wales? I’d have to think about it but maybe).

Jack or Stephens,
Was it invite only or could you actually go to the ticket office and pay to ride the APT. Excuse my ignorance if it's common knowledge to everyone else.
Cowley, If ever someone does build that time machine, you can certainly count me in to go bashing. I'd gladly pack a star jumper n flares (probably still fashion in now in Cowley's neck of the woods;)) and ride the rails in the early and mid 70s. I could only imagine the sheer confusion of where the hell to go first on an ALR. From John o Groats to Land's End loco hauled was king.
