Agreed re Knights Templar- my favorite one in London. Do you include Lloyds no.1s in your quest?

Also any idea when the strand one opens?

Yes, to coin a phrase All the 'Spoons, all of them. A couple have closed down since I started - never got inside the Green Man at Bank, it was shut when I went and then closed down about a month later, didn't look particularly inviting though.

The Wetherspoons App is quite useful as it lets you mark a pub as visited, would be more useful if it then showed them with a different coloured pin on the map but you can't expect the Moon. The final pub I visited in zone 1 was in Leicester Square just two weeks ago, surprised how cheap it was relatively (particularly having just paid £5.60 for a 330ml bottle of Meat Loaf lager at the Dominion Theatre!).

Not sure when the Strand opens, I think I read the date in the latest magazine, before Christmas I think but that may have been a different pub. This website (not mine!) is quite useful if a bit basic https://www.ucl.ac.uk/~ccaajpa/pubs-spoons.html

None of the Wetherspoons in Zone 1 are the usual Spoons cheap, but the Hamilton Hall at Liverpool St is reasonable for a quick pint (or two) before catching the train home. I'm sure their new outlet at St Pancras will also be popular with football and rugby fans passing through on their way to and from a game.
The Sir John Oldcastle at Farringdon is good value.

Great news - at last the chance to get a pint near King's Cross for less than £4.50!

It doesn't quite make up for the loss of the Bree Louise near Euston though.
Try the Dolphin. Was reached by a passage opposite St P on Euston Rd, which was blocked last time I went, may be open again. Beer less than £4.50, good Thai food.

Any with a quiz machine in.....

Huddersfield still has one, Reading pub used to but was taken out after the recent refurb, Leeds white rose pub had one but when I last went a few months back it was being refurbished so assumed that has been replaced aswell.

Anymore around?

Just looking at other pages of this thread, the pub at Temple Meads on Platform 3 also had a quizzer until fairly recently in the corner.

Mentioning Reading, the post-refurb Three Guineas is now ridiculously overpriced. £4.80 for a pint of Hophead - eek!

Help is at hand however, as the Greyfriar, which specialises in serving local ales, is a 2 minute walk from the south entrance (turn right when leaving the station):-

Cheers for the info, will have to give that a try.
Had a couple of pints in the 3G yesterday after finishing work - £4.55 a pint o_O

The Waterloo Tap is probably the cheapest in the area and good beer well served.

Mentioned earlier the White Rose in Leeds station, according to google it has now closed?! Haven't been through Leeds station for a few months due to all the work at Derby but always a pleasant place to have a quick half while waiting for a train.

Surprised as when I last went it was closed and the note on the door said it was being refurbished.

No, it's now a Beerhaus. It needed a refresh.

In case it hasn't been mentioned before Sowerby bridge station Jubilee refreshment rooms are real ale/ railway themed and usually have a sprinkling of enthusiasts in as well as being the headquarters of friends of Sowerby bridge station. Monthly transport talks and auctions too.

Still ridiculously expensive though. I can't see how it survives when there's the 'spoons in the (much nicer) Wellington concourse.

I must admit, I agree. It might be different if it had wonderful architecture or a view of the trains, but neither of these are true.

All I can say is that the Spoons in Leeds can get annoyingly busy at times, so if you just want to get a quiet pint whilst waiting for a train, it can fit the bill

That might be their secret... when the Spoons is full of ale-trailers, it may appeal to those with fat wallets!

Indeed. I should perhaps add that I rarely drink in either now, mainly because I prefer to enjoy a pint in more exotic locations than Leeds City station

The Waiting Room micro-pub at Whitby Station, 6 constatnly changing real ales (no Doomed Bar or Greene-in-the-gills King here) always at least one dark ale as well as a strongish (5% +) and 14 ciders. No lager. No spirits. Proper bar where you really have to talk to people. Dog friendly. Doesn't open Monday and Tuesday. 4.30 - 9, 12 -5 Sundays. Utterly brilliant.
Plus of course the sign on the door to tell your that "The Waiting Room" isn't "the waiting room".

Next week a Wetherpoon pub is opening at St Pancras.

I think it's where the M&S was under the Southeastern platforms.

Cheaper than the Camden Town Spoons, basic burger and pint for £8.25.

Interesting selection of real ales on Saturday evening alongside the usual Doom Bar/Abbot/Ruddles, all less than £3.50/pint I think.

Carlsberg £3.95, other gassy beers more pricey for those who like that sort of thing.
