Note to all aspiring monarchs: THAT's how it should be done.

RIP Queen Elizabeth.

Has horse racing now lost it's link with royalty?
Princess Anne filled in at the Derby. Whether she will be so keen in the long term is a different matter. Presence will probably be a Royal duty in future. They may need to cancel the Sporting Life subscription to SW1A 1AA as it is unlikely there will be the same enthusiasm for day-to-day racing.

Both Princess Anne and King Charles are in their 70's. William has a family to raise - and it will be at least a dozen years before Prince George would be able to take on Royal duties. I can't see Andrew being allowed to return to public life - ever. (Present at the funeral, but that is it). It is possible that the Wessex's might take on more.

It is going to be a tough few years, they are going to need help and good fortune so next time I sing the National Anthem, I will have no problem with 'Long to Reign over us, God save the King'.

Pedantry, but important all the same: she was styled Her Majesty from the moment of ascension onwards.
Something that’s going to take a lot of getting used to is calling Charles His Majesty rather than Highness.

True. The Queen was always just "The Queen" to most people.
obviously if you meet these people the correct protocol and address are important but it would be vastly silly and affected to sit around at home using the formal title to describe the monarch!

Queen Elizabeth II is the first reigning British/Scottish Monarch to die in Scotland since James V died at Falkland Palace in Fife in 1542 :?:

Isn't Princess Anne supposed to be fond of the gee gee's ?

On reflection, having had The late Queen by our sides throughout the pandemic, it's sad that she won't be there alongside us to see out the latest crisis.

That said, the more I've seen of The King over the last few years, I'm sure he'll take on that role admirably.

I think that Princess Anne prefers dressage (equine ballroom dancing) and point-to-point. However, she is probably also interested enough in racing, particularly the flat.

Just watching the service of remembrance. What a load of scruff bags the British public are. Would it really be too much trouble to put a jacket and tie on, or something vaguely smart for the ladies. This coming from someone who spends 99% of their time in jeans and a t shirt.

A very moving and heartfelt first address from the King.

He has big shoes to fill, but I think he'll be a fine monarch.

I must admit, I don't know enough about racing to know whether that would encompass Epsom, Ascot etc.

Indeed. That's my impression as well.

Wasn't it tickets first come first served at last minute?

I get the impression that the tickets were made available at very short notice, no time to go home and change.

She competed in the Olympics in three-day evening. Day one is Dressage. day two is cross-country and day three is Showjumping. I would have thought that was closer to National Hunt.

I cannot get used to hearing people say 'the King', and I have noticed that some of the news commentators seem to be struggling with 'His Majesty'.

Yes I've found that too. I'm used to it being 'The Queen' that saying 'The King' just sounds odd. I'm sure we'll get used to it though. I'm sure I read someone mention that people had the same problem getting used to saying 'The Queen' back in 1952.

Definitely a lifetime of amazing service. I'm sure many of us (myself included) could learn from her when it comes to dedication. RIP

Not even one black Castrol GTX jacket in sight, shameful...

It does seem rather odd though, but I imagine most there weren't expecting to go or just happened to be in the area?

Or that we're just not used to being dressed up to the nines anymore.

I think I've worn a tie twice workwise over the last three years.

I would have thought it better to be full and attended by people representing the country as a whole, showing that she was appreciated, respected and loved by all - irrespective of ethnicity, age, background, scruffiness. rather than many be turned away because of their attire resulting in a half empty building with those for whom dressing smartly is a way of life (and the politicians of course).

Some may well have decided to attend on impulse, a fair number in black, even if it is a black t-sheet. We could have done without the mobile phone though!

The Queen was always that - The Queen. Never Elizabeth or even Queen Elizabeth.

But it's quite hard to refer to The King. Even the news reporters have occasionally called him Charles (not King Charles, just Charles).

we could just call him Charles or the King
Of course, but I read the news on a South Wales radio station, and if I were to just call him Charles I’d probably get sacked. :) And if I were to call him His Highness it would look terribly unprofessional.

If you write the script just annotate it correctly and you will be fine!

EDIT: Does the station not issue editorial guidelines on this kind of thing?

I was most impressed with the new Kings address.

He didn't come across as wooden at all, indeed most sincere and thoughtful.

I notice the UK's Press and a lot of the rest of the World's newspapers carried the Queens passing on the front page.

Were there any dissenters in the UK ?

Socialist Worker, Morning Star et al ?

It does and the Head of News made sure to remind us that we have a new King and should address him correctly.

As was I. I thought it was particularly touching when he told the public that the condolences mean more to him "than you'll ever know." I thought that was really sweet and humble. While I never particularly admired him that much, I now believe he will do his utmost to continue on from the Queen's hard work. God save the king.

Princess Anne is still a reasonable link to horses. I have some involvement in the equestrian industry and she was the guest visitor at an equestrian trade show at the NEC back in 2020 (I managed to get a few pics at the time)

I was thinking the same, it wasnt wooden at all. Sort of like when Dr Who regenerates into a different person.
